Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.2 to 8.1 update ?

2002-09-09 Thread Michael Viron

Even better would be to place the /home partition on a completely separate
drive from the system drive (on the off chance that your system drive goes
bad). Of course, if you don't have a second drive available, then the
suggestion below is perfectly fine in most cases.

Most servers I've set up have 3 separate hard drives. One is a dedicated
system drive, one is a dedicated /home drive, and the other is a dedicated
backup drive. I also typically set up remote encrypted backups as quickly
as possible.

Bernard,

It's generally accepted that to do a system upgrade from 7.2 to 8.x is
not the best way to move from 7.2 to 8.x. There are enough differences
between the two version that there are problems after the upgrade is
finished. For best results it's recommended that you do a fresh install
of Mandrake.

Assuming you have a seperate /home partition its perfectly safe to do a
fresh install and not lose any of your data files on that partition. you
will of course lose your system configuration and will have to do it
over again. This can be somewhat aleviated by backing up certain
configurations such as Postfix, Procmail, and the like. most of which
lives in /etc.

If you don't have a serperate /home partition then it would be a good
idea to partition your drive so that you do. That way if anything
terrible would happen to your installation, such as being mercilessly
attacked by the user in such a way that the system gets hosed, then your
data files are safe and remain uneffected by the mishap.

Pardon my jumping in here. I'm new to the list and taking a HUGE stab in the dark here.

I notice you have an @home account. By any chance, is this server also doing any
firewalling? If so, is it configured to allow ports 25 and 113? You should have both
ports
open.

2001-06-18 Thread Tim Holmes

When you respond to that email address in your Hotmail account, what email address is
it?
Is the email address [EMAIL PROTECTED]? Does your machine always have the
same
IP address?

For example... I can send an email to my machine directly, since it always has the
same IP
address, and it has a name that can be resolved. Does your machine have at least the
first
of those?

It sounds like it would accept email, if only the Internet knows how to get to your
machine.

So try sending email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] If that doesn't go through then that's not
where your machine is most likely. Mandrake out of the box is set up to accept that
traffic.

Franki,

this might sound like a stupid question, but i've found in the past i've
had to ask myself the same question. are you "sure" the package
openssh-server is installed? I've had the same situation a few times and
almost each time when I "thought" that the server installed it was only
the openssh-client that got installed. Which would give exactly the same
error that you're recieving now.

Also, you will want to check your /etc/hosts.deny file to make sure that
you don't have a line in there that looks like this:

ALL:ALL EXCEPT localhost:DENY

If that line is present then comment it out and you may find that
connection is then possible.

Thanks Franki,

It was the hosts.deny file. Either the pmfirewall module that used to
install the firewall with or maybe it was the 'high' security setting I
chose during the install, that DENIED localhost.

All,

There are a few pertinent files when attempting to set up a mail server
(especially one that you are trying to secure, all of which are under
/etc/mail (at least on Mandrake 7.x).

access - which defines which hosts / IPs have access to relay through your
mail server. By default, relaying is denied on sendmail 8.9.x and later.

sendmail.mc, where you actually make changes to sendmail's configuration
instead of sendmail.cf

local-host-names - where you define what aliases for the machine you want
sendmail to respond to.

If you have some specific questions regarding what is involved in securing
an e-mail server, post it to the list, or reply to this e-mail address.

Daveyou need to have done a 'developer' install to have
all of the tools needed to compile source code but the 7.2
Complete boxed set is a workstation only version and does not
have an option for a 'developer' install. You need the 7.2
Deluxe Powerpack or a set of GPL CDs to be able to do a
'developer' install.

I echo this. Do rpm -q make

If you get a return of "make-3.79.1-5mdk" you have it installed. If
you did a "workstation" install, it isn't, and you won't get that
return. You can go back to your install disks and put it on your
machine, however. There may be some more rpm's that you need before you
can to ./configure, but they are all on the install disks.

I was getting the same problem, its wierd because sometimes mandrake
installed the make command files or whatever they are and sometimes
they didn't. What you need to do is go to the rpm installer packager thing
and look for make on your install cd, then install it. It should work fine
under that.

Trevor,

As you will find, TCP/IP can be used for both local and Internet traffic at
the same time. Hope your Samba reading goes well, and good luck.

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.2 and Netbeui

2001-03-11 Thread Trevor Reynolds

Dave,
I thought since TCP/IP was being used for the internet connection on
both PC's (with 2 different IP addresses and subnets) that I couldn't use
TCP/IP to network them together too.
I guess I need to do some more reading on what samba can do. I went out
and bought a book today so I'm going to give it a try. Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, why don't you just use TCP/IP for all your network
needs? Running NetBEUI will slow both systems down, because it's a very
"chatty" protocol.

2001-02-19 Thread Darin

Yeah.. I tried several different resolutions.. Even generic 640x480x16 color
VGA.. None of them gave a display.. Some would show the screen 4 times,
others were more difficult to read.. At any rate, I found the cure... There
is a line you can add to the options in XF86Config or XF86Config-4. I
pasted a snippet from the XF86Config below.

The intern_disp and extern_disp options allow you to tell the chipset which
display you want to use.. This doesnt give you the flexibility of switching
on the fly like Windoze, but it does work very well.. This also lets you use
the external display with the docking station/port replicator.

FWIW, everything else is working fine.. I did have to set the serial port
speeds with setserial.. It was forcing the modems to connect at 33k.. Those
have been the only two hitches I've had with the entire laptop so far..

It must be something specific with how laptops send the signal out to the
external monitor

TFT and other notebook screens generally have low refresh rates compared to
Crt displays,, thats why I always try using generic laptop screen settings
when I need to get an old monitor working... (recently I had an old 14 inch
SVGA CRT that wouldn't handle anything but "generic 800x600 notebook" got no
idea why, but no other settings worked, and since that did, I didn't bother
trying to setup x by hand...)

I don't know if xfree suports multiple displays,, I had never though to try
it.

you don't mention what you mean by "messed up" a monitor trying to display a
refresh it can't handle has a specific look...

as does a monitor trying to display a res it can't handle...

try setting your notebook res lower, say 800x600 or lower, and then see if
the monitor can handle it..

then try using a lower refresh and try the same thing, keep going down till
it works, and then work your way back up till you find a res and refresh
that works on your ext monitor,, then you will just have to use drakeconf to
change monitors whenever you want to use your external monitor,, corse I
could be wrong, their could be a much easier answer...

Hi,

installation went flawlessly, and Mandrake boots up fine.. I can even get a
really nice display when starting X, but only from the LCD display.. I
notice that when starting X, there is a message that mentions Internal LCD
display only. When I try to use the function keys to switch to the external
display, it does the switch, but the external display is messed up. Is
there a way to get either the External display, or both internal and
external to work at the same time?

The video chip is a NeoMagic 2200. Everything else seems to be working just
fine. I can even use the PCMCIA modem to dial out and connect to the net..

Any help would be appreciated..

My friend and I have experienced such problem. First, everyting was
normal but later we got our HD unreadable.

1.Try to fix it by runing your HD as secondary or slave (asumming
   your OS is in the primary HD and having the Partition Magic installed
there).
   Run PM. In my case, PM detected the problem and solved it.
2.If that doesn't work, try running program such as Norton Utility ( also
   your HD as secondary or slave). This one will recover your files in the
partition if you mess it up (it worked on my HD).
 3.still having the problem ?? look for a real HD expert to fix it (i'm juzt

Before you do things listed above. Try to look for another reference.
I can do mistakes too. Please tell me if you find me wrong.

I can install 7.2 as second OS (/root, swap, /home partitions) ito 8GB of
free space on my primary drive (following Win 98 in first 8GB) and boot to
it no problem from rescue floppy.

But when I launch Partition Magic from Win, I get this error:

Disk 2(8056MB 1027c 255h 63s) appears to have partitions created using a
different drive geometry (1h 63s). This serious problem can lead to data
loss. No partition manipulations should be made to this disk using this
product or the operating system's products. You should back up the data on
this disk, delete all partitions,create new partitions under the new drive
geometry, and then restore your data using the backup.

Disk is a 40 GB IBM with a recent install-from-scratch of Win98 in first
8GB, 8GB Linux, 24GB free space
BootMagic likewise fails to recognize the second 8G as Linux.
Since this was a fresh Mandrake, I could and did reinstall.
Tried both Reiser and standard filesystems.PowerQuest likes neither.
Nothing under my control in install made any obvious reference to drive
geometry.

I'm sorely tempted to return to Ranish Partition Manager and LILO here.
Somebody please tell me that Partition Magic 5 just sucks and is the cause
of my problems?

Or is PartitionMagic telling me the truth and the Mandrake installer has
gone rogue, misreading my drive?

Thanks for any advice.

about it. FWIW, my PM 6 manual says that it only supports Linux ext2 and
swap file systems -- not a word about Reiser.
Since my general rule is that there is less grief if I use MS utilities
for MS stuff, and Linux utilities for Linux, I have no experience with
Boot Manager. Lilo and grub have done just fine. Something comes to
mind, though: Until some time last year, Linux had to be located so that
the boot sector was located below cylinder 1024. That problem has been
resolved. Could it be that your version of Boot Manager isn't hip to the
change?

   Sorry if this was covered in an earlier post but 2 questions reguarding your sustem.

How was your Matrox card set-up during installation, what driver and which version of
X?
Does your MOBO have onboard vid. and is it jumppered to disabled?

   The symptons/lockup you describe indicate a problem in the X system.
Just as a test try running your system at 600x800 60mhz and 16bit color to see if you
still encounter the same system abnomalities.

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.2 crashes

2001-01-31 Thread Vic

I am not sure but I *think* it has to do with the
chipset on the SOYO SY-5EH5 motherboard,
I have heard that those sony motherboards are weird,
so it might be that something in the chipset is not
allowing Linux to grab onto the hardware,
I guess like the other guy said you could test out
the thing running in runlevel 3 uhh, I can't remember
what he said for grub but in lilo boot type linux 3

Have you executed lilo every time you changed the config file? I used to forget
that again and again and again and...
But now it works just fine.

Salman,

I have exactly the same problem as you. I have tried every combination of
append=xxx and label=xxx, upper case M's and lower case m's all to no avail.

However, if I press tab at bootup and type "linux mem=256m" it does work.

  Not to jump Olly, but I believe there's a clarification to be made.
Each "title" section in grub's menu.lst, or each "label" section in
lilo's lilo.conf, can have it's own and different 'append=' line. So
while there could be many 'append=' lines in the conf file, there should
only be one per section (title / label).

   For example, in the excerpt from my lilo.conf below, there's 4
'append=' lines, but only one per section. The line for my 'failsafe'
is one statement, but with multiple items in it. I believe that's the
source of Salman's confusion.

Here's my current lilo.conf

boot = /dev/hda5
timeout = 50
prompt
  message = /boot/message
  default = linux
  vga = normal
  append = "mem=128m"
  read-only

image = /boot/vmlinuz

image = /boot/vmlinuz
  label = failsafe
  append = " hdd=ide-scsi failsafe"
  root = /dev/hda5
other = /dev/fd0
  label = floppy

i tried putting the "mem=128m" under the 1st image=/boot/vmlinuz, which
didn't help either. this is the lilo.conf produced from linuxconf>boot
mode -- there, i set boot options to 'mem=128m', and it produced this file.

  If you did write the change to mbr (ie, by running lilo), and it still
doesn't see the ram it's a hardware issue. Try reseating the ram,
and/or moving it around in different slots. Past that, it's a big
motherboard problem. Check the board specs/docs, it could be that it
won't address ram over 64mb.

You have to execute the command "lilo -v" on a console, you have to be root to
do this.

RE: [newbie] Mandrake 7.2 not detecting RAM correctly

2001-01-28 Thread Salman H Butt

Well, here is my linux.conf file:

boot=/dev/hda5
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
vga=normal
default=linux
keytable=/boot/us.klt
lba32
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message

label=linux
root=/dev/hda5
append=" hdd=ide-scsi"
read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=failsafe
root=/dev/hda5
append=" hdd=ide-scsi failsafe"
read-only
other=/dev/fd0
label=floppy
unsafe

So where would I put "mem=128M"? In place of append=" hdd=ide-scsi" or
append=" hdd=ide-scsi failsafe"? and wouldn't changing those lines screw
with my harddrive? Thanks for the help. I REALLY appreciate it.

Take care,

Hi Salman,
If you use lilo to boot, try opening /etc/lilo.conf as "root"
Look for the line that has append= [I might be empty, or there might be
something in there already] If it's empty, try making it read
append="mem=128M" (Use quotes just like that) If it's not empty, add
what's betwee the quotes into the equation. You can NOT make a second
append line, however (AFAIK)

Hi Rob,

Hmh.. we'll have to look into this one. I'm getting some symbol
conversion problems. It's working for me except for some text or symbol
conversion errors from .abw file to .txt? While viewing AbiWord 0.711,
,in English, the * sign looks # sign in . The -- menus signs run into
each each other. Strange...

Did you check your permissions?

Thanks for the pointer. Using Ctrl-Alt-F3 ... F5 I discovered that Mandrake
7.2 was having problems mounting the CD-RW. (If anyone is interested in
the messages I can provide them.)

I Already have WinME installed so I bypassed this problem by copying the
mandrake CDs to
the Hard drive and used a floppy with the harddrive install image to install
Mandrake.

I am now happily configuring my system...

Hi Dale.

As far as I'm aware, Mandrake 7.2 IS supposed to support these drives - that
is the main reason I upgraded from 7.1.

However, I have exactly the same problem as you do, and as yet no-one has
been able to help me...

This is almost the only thing that keeps me dual-booting with Windoze. I
need access to that drive.

Once that is sorted, I just need to get my sound working, my USB webcam going
and my scanner (which is a Canon BJC-80 with a scanner cartridge instead of
the ink one) and I will be completely Windoze free!

Please let us know if you have any success.

Regards,
Ozz.

Well, you most likely made it properly--use ctrl-alt-f3,4,5 to get the
information from the other screens. If you are plugged into the on-board
promise controller, you may have to give some special instructions to the

Pardon me for jumping in here, but did you try the install from the CDRW
device or from a plain CDROM device. CDROM devices are sometimes finiky
about what they are reading. I had problems with one of my installs until I
got the boxed set, pressed from the factory. Then the installation went fine,
I did not have a CDRW on that computer, otherwise it might have worked. So,
If you can run the install from the CDRW and it still won't find the image,
it would seem that even though checksums are right, the image is not.

RE: [newbie] Mandrake 7.2 installation problem

2001-01-22 Thread Charles A Edwards

If you can view a list of directories in Explorer then the CD was written
correctly.

Are you running the Mandrake installation from your CD-RW drive or from a
CD-ROM drive?
If you are using a CD-ROM drive it is possible, especially if it is an older
drive, that the drive can not read CD-RWs.

I did 'create cd from CD image'. Explorer shows lists of directories/files.
The CD-RW does boot.
I assume Mandrake can read the CD-RW or I would get a different error.
I don't know what test is failing
I downloaded an iso file from a different site and the same thing happened.
How can I check that the CD-RW was written properly???

in windows what does explorer show as the contents of the cd's, iso files or
a list of directories and files?
i.e. did you 'create a cd from an image' or did you drag and drop the iso
files to the cd listing before burning?

No it isn't beta. And yes it has no theme manager--look for it in KDE2.1.

Dear Chris:

The KDE 2.0 that comes with the downloadable version of LM7.2 is the
FINAL version. However, KDE 2.0 does NOT have a thememanager. That will
come with KDE 2.1 now available in beta 1.

Hi Jelle

It would appear that those items simply hadn't
installed. It's possible the install option you chose left them out. You might
need to go for a custom install and manually choose them.

I would suggest reinstall and watch the screens given by ctrl-alt-f3, f4 and
f5 Something is not installing correctly.

Our experience is that not all ATA/100 drives can really do ATA/100, so start
the install with this

At the splash screen hit F1

type in

linux ide0=noautotune

and try that... Likely the missing grep simply wasn't installed due to a
disk write error, and perhaps a few other packages are missing, but a missing
grep is a show-stopper.

Heck yea...Diskdrake will do a real nice job of resizing the DOS partition
so you can make some Linux partitions. One thing you want to watch that
you don't do and that is to make the new Linux partitions behind an
extended DOS partition. This is a very bad thing to do and will result in
partition table corruption eventually bringing one or both systems down.

Re: [Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.2 Win4Lnx]

2000-12-08 Thread Johnny Kwan

Joseph, you are correct. I don't want to use fdisk because it will delete
windows. I have used partition magic before, and I might give it a try.
Installing Mandrake without creating a new partition is still my first
priority unless there is no other option. I also only have the 1.5Gig
installation files downloaded to the HD and not have the resources to write to
a CD. The error message is a little strange because the mounting point for
linuxsys.img is supposed to be /mnt/windows/lnx4win. I know it's got to be
something simple but just couldn't figure it out. Any more help is greatly
appreciated.  Thanks again.

RE: [newbie] Mandrake 7.2 Win4Lnx

2000-12-08 Thread Mark Lee

I've never tried, but as it is basically a scaled-down version of PM it
should. This may be the only option if ME occupies the entire HDD in FAT32.
You just have to remember to leave enough room for installing apps and the
ME swap file, which can be pretty big. You can gauge the size of the swap
file by going to a DOS prompt CD to the Windows directory and do a DIR for
either *.swp (old Win9x) or Pagefile.sys for Win2K type shells.

If you are familiar with FDISK and do not have one partition that occupies
the entire disk you can select option 4 from the menu ("Display Partition
Information") This will show you where Windows lives and how much space it
is using. You can then create an extended DOS partition in the free space
(most likely, this will only allow you to create 1 partition though)

The /mnt/mnt/ issue may occur because the Windows partition is referred to
(I think) as /mnt/windows. Win4lnx could be trying to establish a mount
point within that partition. There's a possibility that it is unable to
write to the boot sector, but that's an (un)intelligent guess. Mandrake
shouldn't have a problem with FAT32 partitions, however, as I have never
used win4lnx this could be an issue. Other things that might affect it are
antivirus software (that prevents the boot sector from being modified) or
some type of hard drive overlay software like OnTrack disk manager.

I'm not sure how much Johnny knows, but if he uses MS fdisk to create his
partitions he's going to delete Windows, which I'm sure he wants to avoid.
Does the Expert Mode allow you to resize fat16/32 partitions similar to
Partition Magic?

As for his original issue, this line:
> "ext2 formating of /mnt/mnt/windows/lnx4win/linuxsys.img fail".
Looks a little strange to me, particularly /mnt/mnt/. But I'm not overly
familiar with win4lnx, so I could be wrong.

RE: [newbie] Mandrake 7.2 Win4Lnx

2000-12-08 Thread Mark Lee

Installing Linux separately will resolve this issue. You need to make sure
that you have sufficient free space on the destination drive (I try to keep
around 1.5GB free) and make an unformatted partition there using FDISK. If
you can, make an additional 125MB unformatted partition for the swap file.

Put the Linux boot disk in the floppy drive and Disc 1 in the CD-ROM then
restart your system. When you are asked how you would like to
install/partition your HDD, choose Expert Mode. Locate the drive and
partitions you created and choose to create an ext2 partition (you can put
the mount point here). Expert Mode offers you the chance to resize
partitions (useful if you need to make room for a swap file).

Mandrake should detect the presence of Windows and, when the install is
complete and you reboot, you will be presented with a boot menu that offers
Linux and Windows. In the case of NT/9x dual boot systems the boot menu will
list DOS as an option. This will get you to the standard boot menu created
by the NT boot.ini file.

Hope this helps,

Mark

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.2 Win4Lnx

2000-12-08 Thread Joseph Red

2000-12-08 Thread Charles A Edwards

Because Win4Linx requires direct access to DOS and this is blocked and
hidden in Win ME
you can not install it.
The only resolutions to this require registry changes which can adversly
effect Win ME and are not advised.
Your safest and best bet would be to resize your Win partition and to then
install 7.2 in its own partition and to forget about Win4Lnx.

That woudl be a good suggestion if it weren;t for the fact that SB Live is a
PCI card, hence it is ONLY PnP.
I had the same problem, and found that in Linux the SB Live card and USB use
the same IRQ. That problem did not occur in Windows or when I switched back to
Redhat ...
so .. the one thing I can suggest is to move the SB Live to a different slot to
see if ot loads at a different IRQ,
If that doesn't get it ... I dunno what to say other than start screaming at
the dev guys ...

Hi Philippe

I wrecked my Soundblaster PCI 128 and bought a Soundblaster Live! Player
1024, Harddrake plays the sample fine, but when I try to take over the
settings I get an error message... I worked on it for about a week but
didn't find a solution. So I bought a Soundblaster PCI 128 again.
If you find a solution, please drop me a line!
Good luck!

As had posted before .. the reason that it is doing that (depends on your

Meaning I will be going back to Redhat. I do not have this trouble in

Hi. I also have a Dell laptop (Inspiron) with the Xircom Cardbus
Ethernet + Modem. I haven't had many problems with linux. I'm assuming
you've got a DSL or Cable connection if you want it to pick up the IP on
startup. This I believe is a quirk with the Xircom cardbus, it work
"fine" with Linux, but is not completely compatable. What I have to do
with mine is run "ppoe -start" for DSL or "dhcpcd start" for cable after
I start up. You might be able to fix this, but so far, this has been
working for me.

Sirs,
I also tried to load MKL7.2 on a Fujitsu HDD of 4.3 GB using a boot

I tried with many utilities to detect the hard disk and none of them
could detect it. A similar problem with Seagate Drive was solved
easily. I think there are problems with the Fujitsu Drives afterall. I
have lost that 4.3 drive and am intending to buy a sea gate hdd of 18

Whoah Dave,

Can you increase your font size, we can't read your questions?

Denis:
Could you expand on how you arrived at your conclusion? Is there a problem
with some or all WD drives and LM7.2? Does it extend to other hard drives? I
thought that they were all pretty much the same. While I don't have a WD
disk, I have been having problems getting a stable installation of LM7.2 on
my Fujitsu 15.3 drive -- gonna make another try tonight -- and I wonder if
I've missed something.

RE:[newbie] Mandrake 7.2 on a Dell Laptop...

2000-12-04 Thread Dave Peat

Is it hanging on the floppy drive?  I installed Mandrake
on a DELL Laptop also and even though I never had the floppy drive in the
machine it automagically mounted it during startup.  Then it would hang
trying to unmount it.  If this is the case, edit the /etc/fstab and comment
out the line that starts with /mnt/floppy...
Good luck!

Probably your WD drive. Compile a kernel for your machine using 7.0
install, dump it on floppy made with "blank.img", and you'll be fine.

RE: [newbie] Mandrake 7.2 ISO's not right size...

2000-12-04 Thread Helsby, James

Try running an md5 checksum on the iso image. Compare it to the md5 that is
listed where you downloaded the image. Most likely, you lost a few bits
during ftp-ing. Also, you might have downloaded it with ASCI, and not with
binary. This WILL cause the problem.

Cheers,
James.

Hi LIst,
I was wondering about something. This morning when I attempted to burn a
few CD's with the Mandrake 7.2 ISO's that I downloaded over the weekend I
got a very strange error message back from the software. It told me that
the length of the file was not a multiple of the sectors on the CDROM. I'm
not sure what this means apart from maybe the file is the right size it's
supposed to be. Could someone shed some light on this for me?

I was using a Windows utility to do the CD's here at work. WE've done
other distros with this same utility before, so I know that it
works. RedHat 7.0, Mandrake 7.1...

thanks,

2000-12-04 Thread Dave DeGear

   I've downloaded and burned quite a few ISO files. I always like to check
the md5sum for the file and make sure that it is correct. Normally I do this
under Linux but I also found an md5sum utility for Windows. Just type "md5sum
mandrake7-2.iso" and see what you get. I don't remember where I got the md5sum
for Windows but it was included with a utility package that I had downloaded.
Let me know if you can't find it and I'll do a quick search.
