Re: [newbie] Best Web Browser
In other words, your definition of "typical HTML" is the non-standards compliant (according to the W3C) variety. Remember that Konqueror (along with other newer browsers like Mozilla/Netscape 6 and Opera) aims to support standards-based HTML. The browser wars saw both Netscape and M$ deliberately create non-standards compliant HTML engines for their browsers as a means of "innovation". It also meant that web designers had to make sure that their pages looked good in both browsers, since they were (and still are) slightly incompatible. This puts other browsers, which have a far smaller market share, at a disadvantage, since no-one checks whether their pages work in them. A great example of this is zdnet.com. Despite supporting Linux in many ways (they have a large Linux section and they own the Linux Hardware Database, among other things), their pages look horrible outside of Netscape 4.x and M$IE. It was only relatively recently that standards-based browsers have become prominent. It will take some time for most sites to comply. For this to happen we need compliant web authoring tools, in addition to compliant browsers. Currently many people use software like M$ FrontPage, which I doubt will become standards-compliant any time soon. In the meantime, several standards-compliant browsers have implemented compatibility modes that can parse malformed HTML. Konqueror does this, but I don't expect it to be good until KDE 2.1. RE: [newbie] Best Web Browser
*Cries* As a web developer I want to kill anyone else who produces a none standards compliant browser. Already we have to test multiple versions of Netscape, Mozilla, and IE on Mac, Windows, (and for Netscape and Mozilla in Linux) as well as testing in Lynx to try to check usability issues for those who can't see pictures, tables, etc (blind people for instance), and we're probably going to start testing in Opera too. We don't even do anything fancy like Javascript and there are still a crapload of issues to work through. I like Mozilla the best so far but even it still has some issues and the fact that the majority used browsers are Netscape and IE means we must check them too. In all about a dozen platforms between the two of them that we watch. Netscape I can forgive since Mozilla is their effort to be more compatible across multiple platforms but what is with IE! IE5 has been a total nightmare for us on all platforms and it acts differently on Win95, Win98, NT, and the Mac. We haven't even gotten to testing Win ME (what a dumb name.. almost as bad as WinCE) or Win2000. :P If Konqueror is making a shot at being a browser I sure as hell hope they work hard to be 100% standards compliant. For that matter why don't they, if they don't, use the Mozilla gecko rendering component? *^*^*^* Have the courage to take your own thoughts seriously, for they will shape you. -- Albert Einstein On Thu, 7 Dec 2000, Adam Many wrote: > CNN.com looks fine to me, using Konqueror. Re: [newbie] Best Web Browser
I spent ages almost a year ago trying to find a good browser for Linux. Netscape 4.5 was annoyingly unstable, but in the end I had to admit defeat. Netscape *was* the best browser for Linux then. Today, Linux has a whole range of browsers to choose from. Netscape 4.76 is now quite stable (your own milage may vary), and is a must-have whether you use it or not simply because it is a standard browser. Konqueror (www.konqueror.org), a core part of KDE2, is rock solid for most people (I on the other hand had to get an alpha version of KDE 2.1 to have any stablity). I have not had any success with running Netscape 6, but I quite like Mozilla M18 (www.mozilla.org), upon which Netscape 6 is based (well actually it's based on a CVS version of Mozilla that's a bit newer than M18, but let's not get into technicalities...). If you want something lean 'n mean, Galeon (galeon.sourceforge.net) can fit the bill. It uses the Mozilla M18 Gekko HTML rendering engine, but it doesn't have Mozilla's bloat. Opera 4 beta 3 (www.opera.com) for Linux is out, but it has a few irratating bugs (try right-clicking on a link) that spoil an otherwise good commercial product. While it's almost ready for prime time, I personally prefer beta 2 over beta 3. I'm not sure if Opera still have it available on their website. My suggestion to you is to try them all out. I personally have them all installed, as they each have their own strengths and weaknesses. RE: [newbie] Best Web Browser
CNN.com looks fine to me, using Konqueror. I find Netscape (IE's not really an option under Linux) less than adequate when it comes to speed and privacy. RE: [newbie] Best Web Browser
I like Konqueror more than Linux Opera. Konqueror is much faster at loading text, and slightly faster (when timed with my stopwatch) at loading complete web pages. Konqueror also has better cookie control. Adam On Wed, 6 Dec 2000, Roger Sherman wrote: > On Wed, 6 Dec 2000, Kelly, Christopher wrote: > > > I have opera 5 for windows. Stable and free. I stand corrected, version 5.0 is free for windows, but its the dreaded ad-supported spyware version. $39.95 if you don't want to see the ads or be spyed on by the ads.

I know people who like Opera, but while I think the beta versions are free I don't think the stable versions are. Amaya is still a little unstable, and last I checked Mnemonic wasn't quite ready either. I don't know about the other browsers X11 on freshmeat.
