I tried to download the privateer remake which had a stated file size of 180.5 meg. Bitttorrent ran at ~160 kps up until that point where the percentage went to 99% downloaded. The speed dropped to ~30 kps and kept downloading. There were uploads at a speed of 1 kps the entire time. I went out for the evening with the download still going (200 meg and still going). When I got home the download was complete at 360 meg. The game installed and now I have to learn how to play it. I followed these steps: 1. urpmi bittorrent 2. urpmi bittorent-gui 3. urpmi mozplugger (Failed on real-codec dependancy of mplayer) 4. Went to website of download and clicked on file. 5. Firefox asked to open of save. Open was with bittorent gui so I chose that. When you join a torrent you download fragments of the file from many people at once and simultaneously you upload to other people. To use bittorrent install bittorrent and bittorrent-gui packages Also make sure the mozplugger package is installed if it is not already. (Restart your browser after installing mozplugger - mozplugger tells your system how to handle most browser file types. For a torrent file it will open up btdownloadgui.py for you) You should then be able to join a torrent just by clicking on the 'seed' file displayed on web pages with firefox/mozilla/konqueror/opera If that does not work then save the torrent seed file to disc and then open Menu>Internet>FileTransfer>BittorrentGUI and select the downloaded file. For Bittorrent to work you MUST open your firewall to permit uploading to other users. Bittorrent does not permit 'leeching'. (Taking without giving) In your firewall open ports 6881to 6889 and 6969 If you have an external firewall then forward those ports to your Linux computer. [newbie] BitTorrent Not working
Hi all, I have just gone back to 9.2 from 10CE, and I am still getting BT and BTGUI playing up on me. When I double click a .torrent file, I get an error message saying that KDEinit couldnt find the BitTorrent executable I have checked, and the folder /usr/lib/bittorrent exists, but it contains all python .py files, amog a few others. Nothing else shows up. Any ideas? I have installed BT from the distro CD. JRH -- Sent using Kmail, on Mandrake Linux 9.2... Kernel 2.6 "Microsoft: Which Virus Would You Like to Catch Today?" I just ran a manual rsync on the cooker tree stopped it after it started writing the second file. When I restarted it the sync picked up from that file. Interesting. On ISOs the entire image will probably have to read and the progress will have to show something above 0% before it would pick up where it stopped. ISOs are still treated as one (very large) file. That may be why I always rsync against complete directories, but it's been so long since I started doing things this way I'd have to dig through a _lot_ of notes to be certain. > There was a partial file while rsync was running though. > No harm done except some wasted bandwidth, I used copies;) Sorry about your bandwidth. As stated above, on ISOs the entire source and target have to be read before anything is actually written. I'm truly sorry that I didn't make that clear sooner. But with 240 GB of disk space available here that isn't the main concern. It also makes a nice clean tree that, in the example given for Mandrake 10, means the tree and hdlists will be in total agreement after the operation is completed. Finally since we're discussing ISOs, if a file or package exists on an old set of disk images but not on the source images for the new version being synced, there will be no discrepancies left if the --delete flag is there. The old files and packages will be deleted. That's why I specified copying the old ISOs. There are many possible reasons to keep ISOs for older releases. > That way if the rsync job hangs or is lost someway you lose > everything.it does leave a nice clean slate though;) You won't lose everything HarM. The application does a "/tmp mount" (the "r" switch for recursive means all and sub directories in the source and target) of the images in order to do the sync. If rsync or the connection crashes whatever has already been written is still there, so it isn't as though you start over if that happens. I use rsync to keep a local tree of the current and previous 2 releases of Mandrake plus a few other distributions. Also keep all the updates synchronized daily for them. Plus I keep images of OEM Windows 98 SE, Windows 2000 Pro and XP Pro. Although the latter are just here in case someone that has kids and a Windows system needs a re-install, but their original disk has become a casualty of parenting. For stuff such as Mandrake 10 Community Editionwll not so much. (-: Just how long do you plan to live my friend? Theoretically you could use bit torrent on a dial up connection; but remember the size of the (for example) complete torrent for Mandrake 10 Community. 2.0 Giga Bytes. How long do you think that would take at a (theoretical) maximum download speed of 5 KB per second? On the other hand you can achieve the same effect (having the ISOs) using rsync instead, and with less pain involved. If you still have the ISOs from a previous version just copy and rename them to what you see here: ftp://sunsite.uio.no/pub/unix/Linux/Mandrake/Mandrake/iso or here: ftp://ftp.rediris.es/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake/iso Then open a terminal and run rsync against a mirror that supports it. The following is the command I use as me, not root. Change the directory path (the part after the space between /Mandrake/iso/ and /archive/backup and so on) to suit your own local environment: rsync -avrt --progress --delete --exclude MandrakeMove-i586.iso ftp.uninett.no::Mandrake/Mandrake/iso/ /archive/backup/nanook/downloads/Mandrakelinux-10.0-Community/ That's all one line. The reason the --exclude flag is in there is probably obvious, you don't need MandrakeMove. Or the md5sum.asc for it but I'm leaving the reader something to do for themselves. The reason(s) for using rsync instead of anything else are IMHO: you only actually download the differences between the files, so less (much) bandwidth and less (much) time involved; it's one way, download only. Sort of anyway, rsync reads everything on both ends but only downloads what's required to synchronize the directories. Rather than upload and download as with bit torrent. [newbie] Bittorrent shadows client (yes, again)
My apologies if this question eventually shows up twice on the list, but my prior post of about 12 hours ago seems to have evaporated somewhere en route ... I've been using the btdownloadcurses.py method of /slowly/ downloading the members' community edition, and wanted to download a gui client for easier control of the various parameters. Okay, so I tried switching from the btdownloadcurses interface to an install of the bittorrent-shadows client (version 5.8.3.), which gave me a "cannot listen" error upon its finishing checking the already-downloaded portion of the file. Fine. On the web, it seems that others had reported similar error messages, and the advice was to upgrade to 5.8.7, which I downloaded. Upon beginning install, though, I get the following message: The following packages have to be removed for others to be upgraded: kdelibs-common-3.1.3-35.1.92mdk.i586 (due to conflicts with bittorrent-shadowsclient-5.8.7-1mdk.noarch) do you agree ? Call me paranoid, perhaps, but that package its suggesting for removal sounds a little important to this near-complete newbie? So, I've not gone any further. (running 9.2) Can anyone either confirm my suspicion or put my fears to rest? Secondly, can anyone assure me that working in Linux /does/ actually get to be less painful with time? :-) Seriously, this has been the most frustrating month I can remember in many years of working with computers, and I'm beginning to think that this old dog can't learn these new tricks ... this is a major hassle getting anything to work properly. Somebody on here said that it is possible by special request to get an FTP download of the ISOs. It should finish sometime tomorrow at this rate :) Still seeing very few clients and peers but that could be just a regional thing and the clients and peers that respond in a given amount of time. I haven't looked into it any yet. Also the packet error rate is way down now. I've seen one peer disappear and I'm not downloading from them now. I'll wait till they reappear and if the bit error rate goes through the ceiling again I'll block them at Shorewall. They were always kinda suspect anyway. I wonder if they've got a fscked hard drive? Okay..then how is it supposed to work and what are the configuration issues? This is exactly the same answer I got with 9.2 with the same lack of explaination. Maybe I'm being as thick as a brick here (something I'm more than prepared to admit) but the understanding and configuration are what I'm looking for. As for being in the minority perhaps I am. Looking at the statistics at http://torrent.mandrakesoft.com:6969/ thousands of people have successfully downloaded. I have to say again that the biggest problem with bittorrent is that people don't understand how it works, and their machines aren't configured properly. Yes there are specific issues that affect some issues, and there are workarounds for most. For those that it really doesn't work, ftp/http downloads are available by request. This definitely beats the old days when I would sit in front of my computer constantly hitting refresh for two hours trying to get in at an ftp server. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] bittorrent: which version on 9.2?
Hi, May i know which version of bittorrent you are using on 9.2? I see there are 3.2.1b-6mdk, 3.3-2mdk, 3.3-3.92mdk, shadowsclient 5.8.7-1mdk available. The first one seems a beta version. The second one refused to install and apparently it is from unsupported. The third one want to remove kdelibs-commons before installing which i think is an important package so i should not remove it. The shadowsclient is an experimental one so not sure if it works OK. OTOH, an average upload rate of 55KB/s tells me you're only givin about 1/3 of your upstream capacity to torrent. I also then tried an 'update' (to current cooker anyhow) with the New Years' beta 1 iso's. Both failed to do much. Restarted my 10.0. beta 1 torrent on rebooting. It's still goin. Somebody is certainly having success with the torrent. I started it after I rsynced the cooker tree last Thursday morning to get the ISOs. The pull has been steady at around 55 KBytes/sec. The only time it isn't running is during brief periods when glitches at my ISP drop my connection; usually a few seconds at a time and never more than a minute. That upload rate is about a third of my maximum theoretical upload bandwidth. I haven't restricted it at all. "Maximum Rates" on this service (cable) are, theoretically; 10 mbit/sec down, 1.5 mbits/sec up. I think I'll be clicking "Finish" in the next day or two so that I can actually try the installer. BUT Before starting the torrent, I edit /usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/BitTorrent/download.py (your python version might be different, mines current cooker) ... and limit upload bandwidth by editing defaults = [ ('max_uploads', 2, "the maximum number of uploads to allow at once."), ... and ('max_upload_rate', 4, 'maximum kB/s to upload at, 0 means no limit'), The last one is the important one. I also have DSL, 1.5mbit down, but only 128kbit up. That translates to a max of about 13KBytes up. Since the d/l stream also needs bits for acks and no acks, leaving the upload unlimited, all but kills the d/l. In my example above, I've limited upload to 4KB. In practice, this keeps torrent from using more than 4.... KB. Which leaves enough for the torrent d/l stream, plus using my connection for other things, including background stuff like ntpd, DNS requests, etc. (run 'ethereal' to see all the background stuff) I got the iso's at an average of 155KB/s down in just a few hours early 1/1/04 while reading my morning email. I've left it uploading since. With the d/l complete, my connection is as usable as even without the torrent uploading. FWIW, I use the GUI 'cause I never could get my head around the CL options ;) I think the OP might be confusing 128 kilobits, with KiloBytes too. Generally you can divide by 10 (8 bits to a byte + a couple more for acks and background proccesses). So a 128kb upstream is really a 13KB/s up. My 1.5million bits down stream does well to get 155KByte/s down. The download.py settings are in bytes, not bits. -- Tom Brinkman Corpus Christi, Texas Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] bittorrent problems
Hi Folks, I've been trying to download the cooker iso's using bt for the last day or so but running bittorrent slows my internet connection to a crawl my connection is a cable modem 600K Down / 128K Up). After googling about it looks like I need to preform some traffic shaping on my connection but that looks a bit hairy and not really something I what to tackle at the minute because I've only just got my Mandrake 9.2 nice and comfy for everyday use. So, after reading through the BT website and wiki it appears that I just need to start bt passing in a --max_upload_rate option (If I'm reading and understading the docs correctly) however when I try to start bt using the following command line, [EMAIL PROTECTED] torrent]$ btdownloadgui.py --max_upload_rate 100 MandrakeLinux-20031231-i586.iso.torrent I get the following error: ERROR (10:28) - error: Too many args - 0 max. run with no args for parameter explanations. Can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong? Is there an rc file somewhere that I should set this in? Talk to you soon, Take care, Paddy If it happens once, it's a bug. Greetings All, Although I find Bittorrent to be a great file sharing program, I find that the uploading rate get so high that it brings down my network connection. Thus, every time I return to my computer, it is necessary to 'service network restart'. Is there a way to control the upload/download rates? [newbie] BitTorrent
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I am sorry to have to report it, but for me the BitTorrent download of 9.2 has been a bit of a disappointment: For 2 days I tried several versions via Mozilla without success. My own fault, I should have tested it earlier when I had a chance. Then I happened to find the BitTorrent-shadowclient plus I gave it a go with Konqueror. At last it worked and it started out reasonably well. The first 2 or 3 days my download rates sometimes went as high as 12 or 14 kb/s. Then it trickled down. My highs became 3,4 or 5 kb/s. Sometimes a little bit more, but never longer than a few minutes. Yesterday I was at 55%. Now I have only progressed to 59.2% and the trickle has slowed today to 0,1 or 2 kb/s. I have tried all settings: unlimited, dialup/isdn, cable/slow, cable/fast, etc. all with high, medium and low upload rates, high, medium and low number of uploads: but nothing makes much of a difference. When you change a setting it goes up for a little while, then reduces again too fast. I can see (in advanced) enough people still around with 100% download completed, but they almost all have an asterisk against `choked` or `snubbed`. I saw one guy coming by at rate of 2,100 kb/s. I was able to download 11 Mb from him, then he was gone... I tried setting my upload rate to 80% of max.: no result. I tried opening my ports 6881:6999: no results; no difference whatsoever. The`advanced` window kept showing only *L*ocally initiated loads, *R*emotely initiated did not appear. And yes, I did restart shorewall. I did it precisely as described in MandrakeClub. Also, BT didn`t continue through the night, as I had expected: if I wasn`t at the keyboard for more than 3 hours the programme stopped and the download as well (the connection stayed up!). This isn`t getting me anywhere, because the last estimate of bt-shadow was that I still had more than 235 hours to go, or ~10 days. I hope that by that time my powerpack cd`s will have arrived from Paris. Also in 10 days probably no one is around to torrent with. I just looked at the graph my ISP shows of daily consumption, and this confirms exactly the pattern: download rate went up on Thursday; Friday it maxed at ~470 Mb and every day after that it went down steady, even though I was connected 24 h/day. I have now used up about 1,800 Mb of my monthly ration with bt. At this rate, if I continue it would go up to over 3,000 Mb (this includes error checking, communication with other bt`ers etcetera), not leaving enough for the rest of the month and for consumption by the other members of my family. So, unfortunately, I have had to stop the download. On the positive side I found, I was glad to be able to upload almost 2 Gb to others. I hope this information is useful somehow. Meanwhile, I look forward to a package from Paris :-) Regards, =Dick Gevers= -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.2.3 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Encryption is an envelope - the contents are private. iD8DBQE/lvquwC/zk+cxEdMRArRTAKDZH2gADiHm6k9CNzK199xWmUTWgwCgxiZg kFN0lVrjGKpWAHWtGIL/D9g= =sXDO -END PGP SIGNATURE- Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
