Hello Derek.

Thank you for the reply and the warning.

After the previous postings from you and others on the list, I had no
intention whatever of getting the PCI modem. The forwarding of the
message with the two URL's was simply information in case anyone was
interested.

Thanks again.

Cheers

Keith

Keith
The Access runner Conexant chip set is the one I warned you about. It is
REALLY HARD to get working. I helped a friend get one working and it took 2
weeks of email support from a guy in New Zealand before it worked, and that
was with the 2.4 kernel, now he dare not upgrade the kernel for fear it stops
working.
The problem is the driver is a binary driver which is no longer maintained by
Conexant.
Trust me, anything is preferable to that dog.

If you search the Linux forum at adslguide.org you will find lots of posts
from people trying to install that driver.

I'm using the above driver on 2.6 and it works fine, "cat

Re: [newbie] Broadband modems

2004-10-13 Thread Keith Powell
Thank you for all the help and advice you have given me regarding broadband
modems. I really do appreciate it.

If I send you each an individual "Thank you" message, it will clog up the list
too much, so I hope you will accept this general message.

Derek asked about computers here. There is only one with one user. My wife is
not interested in computing. The children have long since left home and got
married. My ISP is Force9, which is the same as UseNet. I have never found
out why they trade under two different names. Force9/UseNet are offering a
package of 1Mps download speed with a 3GB cap, for £18:49 a month, which is
the one I am thinking of going with.

The general opinion, is to forget the Voyager USB modem and the A220 PCI modem
which they supply, and go with an ethernet card and a router.

There has been so much excellent advice given, that I am printing all your
replies so that I can study them.

Cheers

Keith

Yes. Internal and USB modem support is spotty at best. It is far better to
buy an external ethernet modem which you can be sure will work ok with
minimum fuss. I can also recommend spending a little more money and get
yourself an ADSL router (maybe even a wireless one) with built-in SPI
firewall for that extra layer of security and future-proofing.

I've used a D-Link DSL302G for a whle now, mostly good, except the web-based
config needs IE to work properly. Instead look for one that uses javascript
web-based config. I've also installed a Linksys WAG54G Wireless ADSL Router
which works like a dream.

Cheers!

John.

It boggles my mind that ISP's are ever so forceful on USB or internal
ADSL routers/modems; WHAT is so wrong with having a nice ethernet based
one that you can plug into your hub or directly into your ethernet card?

They're simple, fast, web based control and configuration, NO DRIVERS

Of all the choices, go for the third *every* time.

Get almost any ethernet card (unless your motherboard already has one) and
external modem or modem/router will do the trick. It will be easier to set
up & more stable than either of your ISPs choices (even under windows).

The Voyager is not supported by Linux

The A220 **MAY** be supported if it uses the Conexant chip set, but the
Conexant driver is closed source and a right **PIG** to get working. (I've
been there and got the T shirt)

I think you will have to get a different modem.
Alcatel Speedtouch USB **does** work with Mandrake although a number of people
seem to have had trouble with it, it works for me. (2.4 kernel only)

An Ethernet modem or router will give you least trouble. Here is one I intend
to install in my sons student house
SMC7204BRA
http://www.nickknows.com/en-gb/dept_376.html

If you have other computers in the house, there are quite good deals on 3Com
54Mbps wireless DSL routers at Dabs.com at the moment.

Which ISP are you using? If you go to www.adslguide.org you can compare ISPs
Plusnet are getting very good reviews at the moment, while Pipex offer free
install and a free Alcatel modem.

One with an ethernet port is probably the easiest. The USB variant would
be my second choice. There is support for some USB modems, although I
don't find that one either ldetect-lst. Myself, I've always used devices
with an ethernet port, along with a hardware router.

a problem and I suspect a problem that is almost impossible to solve.

If your ISP is using anything reasonably standard almost any modem that uses a
ethernet connection should work fine.

Don't know either of these, but I would always suggest going with an
ethernet based modem rather than USB. Internal - well it depends on
driver support. Again, with an ethernet connection it's just going to
work.

[newbie] Broadband modems

2004-10-12 Thread Keith Powell
I'm lost!!

I want to go broadband, and the ISP gives me the choice of two modems in their
broadband pack:

Voyager 105 USB Modem

or

A220 PCI Modem (internal?)

The Mandrake hardware database does not list either.

Any advice on either of these, please? Will either work with Mandrake?

Would I be better off going to a computer shop and buying a different modem?
If so, what would you recommend?

I am running Mandrake 10.0

Many thanks

Keith
