Try this
Put in the CD type F1 as soon as the splash screen appears then type
"rescue" without the quotes.
When it comes up, do
fdisk -l /dev/hda
And record the information
then
dmesg | less
and record down to and including IDE drive identification.
Let's see what you have. I smell a disk geometry error.
