Bootmagic is a part of the Partition Magic package.
And it is very commerial. But worth the money.

PartationMagic and BootMagic are both done by Powerquest and are
commercial. Additionally if you buy PM 5.0 you get both PM and BM.
Personally I like SystemCommander Deluxe more than PM. It has all the
abilities of PM but operates at the MBR level and does not need to be
launched from with-in an OS.
If you want to run more than 2 OS are want to be able to change your HD
at will either are worth the cost.

BootMagic will find your Linux partition and then you add it to your list
of bootable partitions

I don't think the part that is in the Mbr Is the whole LILO Wayne,
just a portion that cascades up to the real file...just like the
vimliniz in boot is not the whole kernel.

This is only a country boy concept derived during my never
ending quest for information..I have never actually disassembled these
files..8-)

Wayneyes you're correct, you need lilo installed in the
booting partition's boot record when you use another boot
manager in the mbr.

Re: [newbie] Down with LILO!

2000-05-11 Thread Denis HAVLIK

Hi, folks

I have some facts which might interest you all...

1) In comming M 7.1 version, LILO is NOT a default bootloader anymore!
This role has been taken by "GRUB", mainly because it has a better user
interface.
2) LILO still gets configured, so if you choose GRUB on install and do not
like it just fire /sbin/lilo...
3) Commercial bootloaders such as bootmagic may be nice, but I do not
personally recomend it because we do not use these beasts ourselves and
basically have no idea about it.
4) if you put GRUB/LILO on /dev/hda3, and some other bootloader on MBR,
you can instruct that other bootloader to start GRUB/LILO. This is called
chainloading, and AFAIK you can even instruct GRUB/LILO to run whatever is
on MBR, thus creating a loop. .-)

cheers
Denis

Ease of use - LILO is a very good LInux LOader, it is not a very good boot
manager, as shown by the fact that Mandrake does not recommend using LILO as a
boot manager in a multi-os setup. Adding and removing OS's is a labor-intensive
operation that is very error-prone. They recommend a commercial boot manager
such as BootMagic.

Waynein /etc/lilo.conf's first line, add the partition
number that you want lilo to install on, to the end of the
device specified (say it says boot=/dev/hda then change it to
boot=/dev/sda1 or whatever the actual partition number is).
Save the file, and as root, type /sbin/lilo and you're done.

Alan,
thanks for the tip though I found a much easier way to do this. For anyone
else who needs to change their lilo config., either boot into KDE or open a
terminal window and as su type "klilo". It is a GUI configuration tool for
lilo and is VERY easy to use. You can change the option there to boot from
floppy, MBR or root partition. I did this, installed my boot manager
software and voila, worked like a charm.

Thanks again,

Wayne

RE: [newbie] Down with LILO!

2000-05-10 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

Lilo has a few tricks up it's sleave that other boot managers cannot touch.

One of the biggest is the ability to SWAP bios settings for drives...

This means that you can say, have FOUR hard drives on your machine and boot
from ANY of the four drives with ANY os installed.

I have WIN2K on a third drive (IDE CHANNEL 2, MASTER) NT on a fourth (IDE
CHANNEL 2, SLAVE), WIN98 on a Second (IDE CHANNEL 1, SLAVE) and Linux on the
first (IDE CHANNEL 1 MASTER).

Lilo handles all of this with aplomb.

Each OS comes up believing it resides on the primary boot device...

Man "lilo.conf" and check out the section on

"disk = device_name"

Since you can use this trick with multiple partitions... well, you get the
picture.

LILO is okay and all, but doing a custom install, I noticed other boot
managers can be installed. How do they rate feature-wise with LILO?

Here's the features near and dear to me:
Ease of use (especially adding newly compiled kernel--much easier to compile
than install I found).
Easy to incorporate alternative OSes -- Win2k mainly.
Easy to remove.

I use a GUI boot manager called XOSL that works great! Lots of boot
options and
it has a Windows 95 look and feel. Just make sure to put LILO on your
Linux boot partition as it doesn't yet support direct booting of Linux.
And before installing any boot manager, always backup your MBR 1st!
Here's a page from the manual with links:

Extended Operating System Loader (XOSL) is the world's only full-featured
free boot manager, with a real, easy-to-use and full-blown graphical user
interface.

Extended Operating System Loader is an absolutely free boot manager and
comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY. XOSL is distributed under the terms of
the GNU General Public License (GPL). The source code of the entire XOSL
project is freely available at the official XOSL web site:

For XOSL a general discussion list exists. This list is the preferred place to send your questions, comments, bug reports, etc, but feel free to mail me personally at [EMAIL PROTECTED]. New releases of XOSL are announced in the general discussion list and in the announcement only list. See the references section on how to join either list.

Before posting any questions regarding XOSL, make sure you have read this manual. This document covers XOSL version 1.1.2.
