Kindly correct me if i am wrong please.
I have read somewhere that booting with disc2 helps with the older machines and cater
for older drivers while disc1 cater for later models and drivers???

Thank you all for your suggestions regarding not being able to install
Mandrake on a hard drive which already had XP on it. When trying to install,
the machine just rebooted into XP.

It was solved by starting the Mandrake installation with Disk2. When asked
which CD drive to use for installation, remove Disk2 and replace it with
Disk1 and click on OK. Then, from the report I have received, the
installation went smoothly as though Disk1 had been used for booting.

So it would appear that there is a problem with his CD drive not reading some
disks. I also have that problem occasionally.

Cheers

Keith

Your problem was caused by installing mdk before xp. If you had done it
the other way windows would not have overwritten lilo and lilo would
have had the boot instructions for XP.

Just wanna tell you that I had the same problem. I installed XP after MDK
9.1, and lilo did'n start, there was some error.
Even after booting from cd. boot starter(lilo or grub) did'n start. So, to
fix this problem I downloaded boot manager(bootit) and install it.
But even then I couldn't start linux(it started when computer starts but
couldn't find linux). Inportant is that it took primat from XP, so after
booting from MDK cd1 and configuring lilo everything was working just
fine(lilo delated bootmanager).

I've been dual-booting Mdk with MS since Mdk8.2, first with WinME, and now with XP. I
found that if you just let Mdk do it's thing with diskdrake doing the partitioning, it
has presented no insurmountable issues. Not on my Dell Dimension anyhow.
I am talking about installs of Mdk were MS was in place first. Mdk has always played
nice with MS here, for the most part at least.

I've had issues though, but have been able to get through them all with the help of
the learned and kind folks on this very list.
It is wonderful when those who have knowledge are willing to pass it along to others.
I am appreciative of many such kind folks who have shared their knowledge. Some little
may have even sunk in...either that , or Linux is just getting a lot easier to figure
out. ;-)

Perseverance will pay off..indeed it will.
Regards.

Thanks to Marc, Miark and Thereidos for your replies.

I have sent your replies on to him, but have not yet received the information
you ask for.

As soon as I hear from him, I'll let you know.

For me it looks like he didn't install lilo (or grub) in MBR. Ask him is
his computer booting straight to XP? If so I'd say - yeah, no boot
loader. To fix it he'll have to boot from mandrake cd and press F1 on
first screen then type rescue. There will be a option to reinstall lilo.

When during the Mandrake installation process does he get this message?
Is he _booting_ from the first install CD, or is he looking at the CD
when he's in Winblows?

Just to be 100% sure that I understand correctly is he unable to boot into
ML or XP after the installation. Your email makes it sound like he is having
trouble booting into ML but from my personal experience booting into PX is
generally the problem.

I just went through that problem a month ago.

[newbie] Dual booting with XP

2004-10-07 Thread Keith Powell
I am trying to wean a friend off Windows and on to Mandrake, so I have sent
him a set of Mandrake CDs to install. He was supposed to install it on its
own hard drive, but has changed his mind and wants it on the same drive as
WindowsXP.

I have received an e-mail from him saying that when he tries to install
Mandrake, he gets a message saying to do a reboot and Mandrake will be
loaded. This he does and then XP is started. He can get no further.

Has anyone any suggestions I can pass on to him, please -apart from telling
him not to dual boot?

I have no first-hand experience of WindowsXP or dual-booting, so don't know
what to suggest.

If any further information is needed, I will ask him for it.

Many thanks

Keith
