If this happens, I need to log in as Root, and do chmod a+rw /dev/dsp Then I go back to "user", and run kadioserver by hand. That usually fixes it. There should be a hidden file in your home directories of both root and user called .xinitrc If there is edit it to read startkde If there is no such file, make one and edit it to read the above command. Save your changes and type startx at the prompt. Hope it works. -- Andrew Blackburn England

[newbie] I can't login my KDE.
Dear all, I re-start my computer today. While I try to login from the KDE login screen, the screen just flash once and seems the X reset, then bring me back to the login screen. I try to login as a normal user , or root, both same. I can login to the text console but just can't login to my KDE but everything are OK yesterday. (I just install KDE). Finally, I beleive that there is a problem of *sound* while KDE startup. I set some sound while the KDE start. I found some msg. in the file .xsession-errors, in the home dir. kaudioserver: Catching fatal X IO Error. Cleaning up. PID could not get read. PID could not get read. PID could not get read. PID could not get read. PID could not get read. PID could not get read. PID could not get read. PID could not get read. PID could not get read. PID could not get read. kwmsound: Failed connecting the audio server. Please check manually if you can start kaudioserver. This is form the normal user but root has "kwmsound: Failed connecting the audio server. Please check manually if you can start kaudioserver." message also. I believe that the kaudioserver get into trouble. However, it ask me to "check manually" but I can't as I can't login in X and there are no man pages, info, doc about kaudioserver. I 've run sndconfig, and mpg123, and I think my sound card and the setting are right. And the message in /var/log/message also tell me: May 22 02:55:10 localhost sound: sound May 22 02:55:10 localhost sound: May 22 02:55:10 localhost rc: Starting sound succeeded Would anyone kindy tell me whatz happented? Is it really the problem about the kaudioserver and anything else? Am I did anything wrong and how can I fix them up? Thank you very much!
