But now its saying Error in exec of stage2 :-( FATAL ERROR IN STAGE1: Not a dir I cannot recover from this. You may reboot your system. Anyone seen this before, and if so, any advice? [newbie] Install error - Segmentation Fault
I have been trying to get Mandrake 8.0 installed for the past couple of days. However, I seem to be getting an error called a segmentation fault around the part of the install where you select the packages you want. I want to install linun, but I can't. I am running a Celeron-533, 256Mb ram, two hard drive ( one 30 Gb, the other 20Gb), nVidia TNT 2, two network card ( smc, netgear), and a Diamond Sonic Impact s100 sound card on a Iwill motherboard (vd133) Please Help! __ Do You Yahoo!? No. There's no permissions in Winblows, which is one reason it's so inherently insecureable. M$ uses those attributes (ie, hidden and system) so most users won't know those files exist, and hopefully won't fool with 'em. BTW, defrag with some Windoze systems won't move swap files either. There's a few work-arounds, but the easiest is to set virtual memory to -0- (only if you have 64mb ram or more), and then reboot and defrag. This isn't usually a problem tho. -- Tom Brinkman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Galveston Bay > > Thanks, > Randy Kramer > > Tom Brinkman wrote: > >Boot to DOS, then you need to strip the hidden and system > > attributes from all files. Re: [newbie] Install error
Thomas, Thanks very much! I made one correction (which I think matches your intent) so that anybody else reading this is not confused. I think you meant: attrib +r +s -r c:\*.sys Hmm, and I'm not sure why the +r ... -r -- guess I'll learn when I try it. (If I'm confused, correct me!) Re: [newbie] Install error
Tom, Wonderful! Thanks! One followup question: Must I restore those attributes for any (functional) reason after the defrag? (I mean, is there any reason something (in Windows) would not work because the attributes have been changed?) to minimize the "can't (or maybe won't) be moved clusters, you can try and set virtual memory to nothing while you run defrag and scandisk, and turn off your screensaver too - Original Message - From: "John Rye" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Randy Kramer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2001 9:34 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] Install error > On Wed, 20 Jun 2001 18:48:51 -0400 > Randy Kramer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > Randy, > > Those 'can't be moved' clusters always gave me trouble when I attempted > skrinking. > > For the past few Linux installs where dual-booting was going to be used, > I found it a better option to remove and reinstall Windows into it's own > part of the first harddisk. > > I realise that this option is a problem if you have 'valuable' data in > the windows partition but I suggest it will give you a great deal less > hassle. > > Cheers > > John > > > 1. For the past few Linux installs where dual-booting was going to be used, I found it a better option to remove and reinstall Windows into it's own part of the first harddisk. I realise that this option is a problem if you have 'valuable' data in the windows partition but I suggest it will give you a great deal less hassle. Cheers John > 1. Re: [newbie] Install error
Charles (or anyone else), Noticed your post, thought you might be able to answer a few questions related to shrinking Windows partitions: 1. Sometimes when I defrag a Windows partition there are clusters that "can't be moved" in various locations throughout the partition -- can "resize" move those while shrinking? 2. Does reshrink give any warning before it reshrinks if the size you ask for requires moving the "can't be moved" clusters? 3. Does resize even attempt to move clusters, or does it just shrink by the amount of emtpy space at the end of the partition? Thanks, Randy Kramer Charles A Edwards wrote: > 1)Run both ScanDisk and Defrag on your drive before you begin the > installation > 2)Run the installation in Expert mode. > 3)At the partitioning stage of the installation click on your Windows > partition and select the resize option and resize it by the amount of space > you wish to alow for linux.

(If you choose you can create additional linux partitions but they are not necessary.) 6)Click done and the partition tables will be written to disk. 7) At the next screen formatt both the swap and the / partition. The installation of packages will then begin. If when you actually get to partitioning you are unclear or unsure as to the directions do not do any thing, exit the installation and get back to me and I will even more detailed instructions. [newbie] Install Error
I have downloaded the iso images and burned the CDs for Mandrake Linux 7.1. When I try to run the upgrade on a machine currently running 7.0, I get an error that won't let me continue. During the "Choose Packages" phase, just after the box that lets you indicate which CDs you have, I get and error messge that says "Can't take sqrt of -0.524638". The machine is an AMD Athlon 700 with 128M RAM and 30 Gig UltraDMA-66 HD. Any help will be greatly appreciated as I really want ot try out the new release. --Richard -- Richard B. [newbie] Install Error
I have looked through the FAQ's and cannot seem to find my problem -- but it must be common. An error occurs during the step "install bootloader". This is on a Gateway P5-133 with 1.2 GByte IDE Hard Drive and 64 MByte of Memory -- no unusual hardware attached. I have tried it with no printer and no network card (it usually has a generic NE2000 compatible). I assumed the problem was with the partitioning -- but I have tried a number of approaches and nothing helps. No windows partition on the machine. Thanks Mick [EMAIL PROTECTED]
