To boot Suse, it will hand control over to the Suse lilo install, and it will handle booting Suse. As far as the Mandrake version of lilo knows, it could be booting any OS when it uses the "other=/dev/hda10" entry. The way you have it set up, if you update the kernel in Suse, you then have to boot Mandrake, update /etc/lilo.conf, and run lilo before you can boot the new kernel in Suse. Also, if you want to have more then one kernel in Suse, you will have to add the entries in the Mandrake copy of lilo.conf, and run lilo from Mandrake. Also, if you wipe out the boot partition in Mandrake, you will not be able to boot Suse from the hard drive. Ah interesting, no wonder when I update my Suse kernel with Yast Online Update, it gave me lots of error when rebooting about can't find /lib/modules.. Many thanks Mikkel :) I hope Mdk10.2 will be much better than Suse92. Yes, that is why. I am surprised it even boots. If the old version of the kernel and initial RAM disk were removed as part of the upgrade, then the only reason it still boots is that the space they use on the disk has not been overwritten by new data. The thing you have to understand about lilo is that it is really two separate parts. The part you run from Linux understands the file system, and configures things for the part that actually boots the system. The part that boots the system does not understand the file system. All it know is where the information it wants is located on the disk. You gave it this information when you ran lilo in Linux. But if you make changes, you have to run lilo again, to update this information. With the normal setup, this is not a problem. The package managers in both Suse and Mandrake take care of running lilo for you when you update the kernel. But, because you are using the Mandrake copy of lilo to boot Suse, Yast updates the wrong version of lilo. Mandrake does not take care of it, because it has no idea that you updated the kernel in Suse. So you have to do it manually. I would spend the time getting the version of lilo on /dev/hda10 working, and using the "other=/dev/hda10" option to boot Suse. Or I would consider changing Mandrake to use Grub instead of Lilo. Grub does understand file systems, so it would handle the kernel changing in Suse better. You would still have to make sure and update the grub config files when you change kernels, but at least if would warn you when you break things. Now, if you want a real challenge, install one of the other boot manages on the MBR, change Mandrake lilo so it installs to your root partition instead of the MBR, and let the boot manager give you a menu for Mandrake, Suse, or Windows. There are several options for free boot managers on freshmeat, or you could go with something like System Commander. [newbie] Installing a bootloader after the fact
I installed Mandrake 10.1 via ftp on a second drive configured as a slave. It would be accessed in a multiboot environment using a boot manager like GAG. So I didn't install a boot loader thinking that GAG would handle this. But when GAG identifies the Mandrake / partition on this drive and I attempt to boot from it, I get an error stating: "Boot sector not found or invalid." So my question is, without reinstalling, can I go back and install a boot loader on the / partition of the Mandrake install on the second disk? Re: [newbie] Installing only the kernel.
Mike; If you'd follow up on the information you got in your "What Is URPMI?" thread, you'd be able to "urpmi kernel" and have a selection of kernels to install (which would install next to whatever kernel you're currently running.) Everything from kernels optimized for memory above 1 gig, 4 gig, or 64 gig, or optimized for multimedia or motherboards with multiple processors. The easiest way to do all of this is to install some urpmi sources (in other words, mirrors from which to download these kernels) using the easyurpmi site (http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ , then follow directions). Then open up the Mandrake Control Center, click on Software Management, then Install. After you get a listing of the packages available in the left window, search for "kernel" by typing it into the box, then selecting "search". Voila, you've got a list of the various pre-compiled kernels available. If you see one you like, put a check in the box next to it, and select "install". The software takes it from there. I think you originally asked about patching the kernel. Sorry, I can't help you there. If you're wanting to compile from scratch, you'll need to google for instructions. That's beyond this list, and is not necessarily for the faint of heart. Re: [newbie] Installing only the kernel.
Mike Chalmers wrote: Will someone tell me how to install only the kernel from www.kernel.org? From, Mike Chalmers I am not sure what you mean by "only the kernel". What you can download from www.kernel.org is the source code for the kernel. You then have to configure it for your system, compile it, and install it. It is not like installing the compiled kernel from a Mandrake RPM. The advantage is that you can fine-tune the kernel for your hardware. The disadvantage is that you don't get any of the patches that Mandrake applies to the kernel source. It is also a bit more work, takes more time, and a bit more knowlege. If you feal you want to try this, then the first step would be to track down and read the HOW-TO on compiling your own kernel. (Hint - you should find a link to the HOW-TO on the www.kernel.org web site.) Mikkel -- Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with Ketchup! We've all got to start somewhere. I don't do "programming" either. I'm a truck driver :) I've been on Mandrake 10 about a year or so now... You'll get there, but it just takes a bit of time to learn and be patient. I managed it much easier because I run a Linux and a Windows machine side by side and I find that the Linux machine can manage a lot more a lot easier so I am glad I have changed, but at the same time there are things on Windows which I cannot do without and have not yet got the ported software working. Re: [newbie] Installing kbluetooth
> What does the label say on those CDs? > If they are 10.1 Community Edition it may be worth upgrading. Since I am > still using 9.2 I'll let others tell you how worthwhile it is. Be very careful upgrading from 9.X to 10.x. There is some hardware that 9.X will configure and 10.X will into spasms with, in particular IBM Thinkpads. Also consider that for some hardware notably IBM Thinkpads you can install the DVD version and apparently the CD version. The apparent comes from the fact that the CD/DVD reader used in Thinkpads only reads 99.9% of any given Mandrake CD correct which is enough most times for Mandrake to install and run but NOT run correct. An issue that is guaranteed to drive you nuts trying to figure out what is wrong. The issue with trying to install 10.X DVD in Thinkpads is that there is apparently some screwup in driver selection so an error message appears saying place 'Auxiliary Driver Floppie' in floppy drive. These 'Auxiliary Drivers' are located on the DVD and must be coppied to a NEW floppie which will accept 1.72 MB of data by the dd comand. If you attempt to use old floppies which would not accept 1.72 MB of data the drivers will NOT work. The assumption here is that you have a floppy and a DVD drive and a DVD drive. If you do NOT have BOTH then use some other method for installation. Frank Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? It's bluetooth, the short range wireless thingy that talks to mobile phones, (and other stuff, but mainly phones.) If you don't use it you can very safely ignore the message. The pin helper is the program that asks for a six(?) digit number when pairing with a device. kbluepin will just ask for the number with a nice window. > Sorry if these questions are so basic. (It may be more mainstream in 10.1) 1a. We really don't care how basic a question is. This is the Newbie list - many questions here are basic. We're happy to help. 2. You don't need to know anything about programming to use Linux, any more than Windows. 2a. What knowledge you need, you'll pick up over the next few weeks without noticing. The average time between someone appearing on this list as a total newbie, and answering a question themselves is about a month. 3. You need to know _less_ about computers to use Linux safely and securely than you need to use Windows safely and securely. 3a. No viruses, little or no spyware, software designed to be secure from the ground up and fantastic support. > I am using a $12.99 set of six CDs. [newbie] installing new versions - keeping settings etc
Hi, Merry Christmas or happy holidays to all on the list. A quick question that arose from my last installation. I would like to know the best way to save emails, desktop settings etc. when installing new versions. When I installed 10.1 Official I tried to copy my Mail directory and my .kde>share>apps>kmail directories thinking that they would restore all my emails. When I copied them over to /mnt/win_d (fat32 partition) there were some errors about some files not copied. There were no essential emails so I proceeded with the installation. My kmail directory structure was saved but the actual emails were not. What is the the recommended method of retaining emails? Also, is it advisable to retain desktop settings considering that KDE (my choice) is constantly being upgraded to new versioins? Thanks, Bill W. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Installing 10.1 from HD- questions
I'm downloading the DVD-ISO and am going to copy its contents into an empty partition. I plan to add a line to the boot loader pointing to that partition. 1. I have two paths to vmlinuz in the isolinux directory, alt0 or alt1. Does anyone know which I should point to, or how to determine the correct one? 2. When I tried to do this using a floppy with a grub image, I kept getting an error showing file not found. It was also showing Filesystem type ext2fs partition type 0x83. But I have, according to MCC, Journalised filesystem ext3 (0x483). Do I need to reformat in ext2fs for the installation, or should the install kernel support the ext3 partition? Couple of reasons behind all this -- CD burner not working in linux, and I have maybe just enough room on the old MS partition (burner works under their windowing OS) for 1 CD-ROM ISO at a time. Not worth fixing CD burner if the new install will do it for me, and certainly not worth rebooting six times and twiddling my thumbs while the CD burns. Thanks, Fred Now if I could just remember why I made a 14 gig root partition last time. 121 megs used. H. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? List resend You guys with gmail addresses are a pain in the neck ;-). I know you cannot change the reply-to setting, so I only blame you for using the system, not setting it up properly. This is the third time in the last twenty-four hours I have had to resend a reesponse to the list that I found in my sent after not seeing it show up on the list. In every case, the poster was sending from a gmail address. **Original Response Below** On Saturday 30 October 2004 09:15 am, Paul Smith wrote: > Is it possible to install Mandrake 10.1 Official without the ISO cds? > Or should I wait until the ISO cds are available for downloading? You can either download the entire distribution tree from an ftp mirror and install from hard disk, or you can install directly from the dist tree, which will only download the packages you are installing. To do that, there is a floppy image that will boot and start the installation process and you just point the installer to the location that contains the distribution tree. There are seperate floppy images for each kind of install you might want to do, hard disk, network, cd-rom (for machines that cannot boot from cd). There is also a small boot.iso which combines all of the features of the various floppy images. Just burn it and boot from it for any kind of install. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

They are not available for download yet, but you can get them (4 CDs) here : http://linuxcentral.com/catalog/?prod_code=L000-296&id=C1CQEBKnWD3C 6 But, here is what I did : 1. As root, edit the file "/etc/mandrakelinux-release" and change Community to Official. Save it. 2. Download kernel-2.6.8.1-12mdk form a mirror .I used : ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Linux/Mandrakelinux/official /10.1/i586/media/main/ 3. Install it alongside your old one. Re-boot into the new one. 4. As root : "urpmi.removemedia -a" 5. Go here : http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ 6. Define your sources for 10.1 Official, and proceed as instructed. 7. As root : "urpmi.update -a && urpmi --auto-select". 8. As root : "rpm --rebuilddb && update-menus -a -n && udpdatedb" That's all. When comparing my new rpms to the ones on the mirrors, it seems that I run 10.1. Official. I actually don't know if step 8 is required, but it won't harm. Don't bother trying to compile mplayer. It is way easier to install a precompiled binary. Go here http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ Follow the instructions to add on line sources for 'plf', 'contrib' and 'updates' (if you do not already have an update source. Make sure you pick sources for 9.1 Copy the commands it gives you into a root terminal. (Tip : - Copy/paste in linux is highlight/click mouse wheel ) Then using your Mandrake Software install GUI install mplayer and mplayer-gui All the other stuff will get installed automatically. derek -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Lanman and Hoyt, thanks for the pointers, Linux is back. I went the rescue root, which installed lilo. After booting up Linux, I tried "grub-install /dev/hda", but it gave me some message like "unable to detect BIOS drive for /dev/hda7". /dev/hda7 is where my 9.2 Linux is installed. So I started up the GUI and did it through the Mandrake control center. That reset my menu.lst to a default, but fortunately I was smart enough to back up my real one. Java is probably not in your path so you'll have to give the full path to its location; on my machine it's /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_01/bin/java. You could probably set up a link in ~/bin or /usr/bin if you wanted. Todd Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Installing a .jar file
Hi all, I want to install a platform independent font viewer (Opcion). On their website ( http://opcion.sourceforge.net/help.htm ) they say: Execute Opcion Font Viewer ... For Linux users use the command "java -jar Opcion_v1.1.1.jar" in console/terminal/shortcut. When I fire that command in the command line, I get: "bash: java: command not found" I have Java installed and tested. It's there. Does anybody know how to install/use these kind of applications? If the updates file gets so large that it won't fit on a single disk that could become a problem. You won't be using "Mandrake Update" in either case. If you use the rpmdrake graphical interface just keep it set to show "all files by update availability." Any new versions will be listed there. Not to continue the OT, but to further highlight the strength of Linux in general and mandrake in particular, if you download the whole tree, one could also make their own DVD iso with the MakeCD script found in the misc directory of the dist tree. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Installing OS 10.0 Problem
Dmitri wrote: I've run into the same problem continuously when trying to install 10.0. Here's the situation: Downloaded ISO img of mandrake 10.0 disk 1 and burnt to disk. Restarted computer with cd in drive and it boots into the installer. A few seconds into the install (right after it finishes detecting the USB devices) when it tries to install/make a ramdisk, i get the following error: Command error= 0x51 <4> end request: I/O error, dev hde, sector 1351356 Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 337827 The numbers vary after "sector" and "logical block," but the error is respectively identical every time. After a while, in the graphic interface, an error box pops up stating that there may be a hardware problem or a bug in linux. I've tried downloading a new copy of the ISO img and tried that and the same thing happened. Then i downloaded a copy of the ISO off of a different server and it happened again; same place, same problem, same error. I've tried burning the ISO in mandrake and windows. No matter what, i get that same error and the install stops in the same place. Dmitri Try cleaning your CD-ROM drive. If that doesn't work, try burning the CD at a slower speed. It sounds like the image you have downloaded is ok, but the drive is having a hard time reading the CD you have burned.
