RE: [newbie] Installing 9.2 with the latest and greatest (stable)

2004-02-23 Thread Ken Walker
I have a proxy server here at work, and can never get a LM install to do an
automatic update, have to do it all after the install.

I've also tried it at home via broadband, it says checking for updates and
immediately goes on to the next step.

Is there any way of telling the install program to use a proxy ?

And why would it say its checking and then do nothing ?

Yes, at the end of th installation process, you have an opportunity to
immediately connect to an update server and download all the available
updates for the packages you have installed.

It will be very easy to update to final from the current release candidate.

That's what those of us that run cooker do every day. You basically update
your urpmi sources and then simply

urpmi --auto-select

to upgrade all your packages to the latest. Kind of like the old Debian way

of 'apt-get dist-upgrade' or whatever it is.

> If I am wrong about this, I would be more than willing to install the

If you install the release candidate, just set up a cooker repository as a
urpmi source and then update every day or so until 10.0 becomes final, and
then change the source to the official 10.0 tree and do 'urpmi
--auto-select'
one more time.

You should definitely update if you find some bugs, as they are being fixed
daily.

How did you manually change lilo to select the 2.6.3 kernel ?

manually? I would have thought manually would have been to delete the
symlinks (vmlinuz initrd.img) and set them to the 2.6.3?
maybe not?

boot loader..hit okay
a screen with your lilo items comes up, highlight the 2.6 kernel
click on modify and check it as the default
lilo config will write a new boot order. that's it

When I installed Mandrake 10 RC1, I hit f1 and told it to install the
2.6 kernel. When I was done the install, it booted the 2.4 as default. I
changed lilo to boot to the 2.6 as default.

wI downloaded the install disk images via Bittorrent. I now have
10.0rc1 installed on my desktop. It looks great and is really fast.

Just a few questions.

1. I thought this installation would include a 2.6.x kernel by default.
I didn't see anywhere in the installation process where it asked me to
choose a kernel.

2. Is there a special mirror location I need to give rpmdrake for
updating this installation? I am trying to use the mirrors that it
finds by default but there seem to be errors when attempting to update
on each one.

FYI.. uname -a tells me "Linux adventus 2.4.25-0.pre7.3mdk #1 jeu fev 5
16:29:56 CET 2004 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux

It will install the newest kernel packaged by Mandrakesoft, which is
2.4.22-25mdk. You can always do your own kernel after install.

10.0 will have 2.6.3 in it as default and 2.4.25 for those that still want to
run a 2.4 series.

I might be wrong, but I don't believe there's a way to install the newest
kernel when installing Mandrake. It automatically uses kernel-2.4.22.
