well i'm much f a newbie about this too, but i'll try to say that i *guess*
they are, and then some willing soul with better understanding than me will
correct me.

ok. OSS ( Open Sound System ) and ALSA ( Advanced Linux Sound Architecture ) are,
basically,
sets of drivers. they are both what CUPS is to printing. packages that contain drivers
for as much devices as possible. some cards are supported by OSS, some other by ALSA
and
a lot of them are supported by both.

you should have noticed a recent post from civileme, stating that it's a very common
issue
that some people can't get their sound to work right because they have both alsa and
oss
enabled. this is, having two active drivers, trying to drive the same device.
( i had this problem in 8.1 too )

as for aRTs.. uhmm as far as i can tell, it's a sound server that provides realtime
mixing
to enable several sound-related programs to work at once ( kinda like having two
instances
of xmms playing songs simultaneously, compared to getting a 'soundcard busy' when you
launch
the second xmms )

my guess is that aRTs connects directly to the sound driver. and opens up a server port
to let any program wanting to play sound to connect to that server and play it there.
aRTs will receive sounds from all applications, mix them up and play them thru the
soundcard,
so you can hear the stuff simultaneously...

DISCLAIMER: all of this stuff COULD and PROBABLY IS dead wrong ;o)

anyway, i hope it helps to clear you out a bit ..

Damian

I read with interest and have used myself many of the anachronisms
mentioned, but quite honestly I do not understand what the
relationships are with one another. For instance Alsa, OSS, aRts, etc
etc. I wonder whether someone could write a short potted
history/technical explanation of what they actually do and how they
relate.

Never could get sound to worky on my Gnome either ... as for crackling I
fixed that :) With an eraser.

yank soundcard, take white eraser (for preference anyway, use pink if
necessary) GENTLY wipe it across the contacts on the card. Blow off
remaining dust, if theres a fan, blow it out gently to get rid of dust,
and make sure theres no dust in the slot or on the contacts. Reseat
card, should be fine.

Mine was throwing some pretty weird stuff at me too I never had a
problem there (cause i never tried it... never could get those sound
previews to work on KDE... GNOME, find but not KDE but then.. the sound
effects themselves work on KDE and not GNOME hmmm) mine were
elsewhere.

Some oddness was causeing my soundcard to !crackle! randomly.. never did
quite figure out what that was. i recompiled my kernel for something or
another and whatever i changed in make menuconfig fixed it.. most likely
i'd chosen the wrong driver for my soundcard, i figure.. or i had

But for me it is really at random! (I mean... sometimes it happens,
sometimes not!) So I never know if I have sound or not
just until I need it or it's too late.

I just typed: service --status-all and got two entries for sound!
One at the very begining and the other at the end of the ouput!

I don't have artsd running. At least i don't think so (still getting my head
around the various daemons). But you could try
service -full-restart artsd
It should force a full restart if "service" knows about it. Try "service -s"
and see if it is in your list. Service is in /sbin by the way, so it is only
in root's $PATH.

Yeah, my system sounds stop periodically too requiring a kde3 restart. Used to
could restart arts from kcontrol, but mine don't work anymore. A friend and

only with the AU preview? hell, i'm still trying to figure out
which app is killing my sound... after a rather intense KDE
session with several apps open, a gnutella client ( LimeWire, boy that java
stuff eats up my old PII 400 proc like a cookie )
Xmms, OpenOffice, a couple of Opera windows, a couple of Konqs, the mail client (
sylpheed )
and Gaim and Licq for my IM accounts.. and my sound gets killed for the rest
of my uptime. i've gone as far as killing every process i started as a user,
and switching to runlevel 1, ( and even killing a couple of processes in there )
restarting the 'sound' oss service.. and then run MPlayer with VESA video output
and oss for audio, and still i get 'soundcard busy'.

as for now, i went back to fluxbox. ( and gawd i was so used to see the memory
gauge at about 95% in a KDE session... fluxbox is stunning in that aspect). my
machine is not only faster, but more stable.

Oh, by the way, i've upgraded to a newer build now, but with the
3.0.0.0.0-released-30-seconds-ago KDE sometimes the aRTs sound server started on
it's own, unpredictably, leaving all my multimedia apps kinda confused...

so, no. you are not alone.
