[newbie] KDE upgrade

2005-01-29 Thread Keith Powell
Some weeks ago, there was a long thread on problems with upgrading KDE
using the Thac packages. Since then, I have not seen anything about it.

Have the problems been sorted, and can we now upgrade KDE?

Many thanks for any information.

Keith

[newbie] kde upgrade

2005-01-14 Thread johnb
hello
I am trying to upgrade kde3.3.0 to 3.3.2 on md 10.1 system. When
preparing package installation the following message comes up: file
/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/engines/libpixmap.so from install of
libgtk+2.0_0-2.5.6-0.2mdk10.1thac conflicts with file package
gtk-engines2-2.2.0-6mdk. Any suggestions on how to deal with this would
be appreciated.
Thanks
John

Thanks for your reply and the help. I appreciate it.

I now know two good ways of doing the upgrade, yours and Jo's.

Thanks also for the warning about the buggy quality of the packages on
the CD. I must think about what to do.

Cheers

Keith

Thanks very much for your help. I appreciate your prompt reply.

No, it isn't too basic! Generally speaking, I think that an answer
cannot be too basic. If a thing is explained in a simple way, more
people reading it are likely to understand it and get help from it.

Cheers

Here's how I did it (then). I put in CD4 and cd'd to the
KDE3.3 directory. There I ran 'rpm -Fvh *.rpm' which returned
some missing dependencies. Mostly libjack* IIRC. I already had
online 10.1 sources set up, so I used those to get the deps. You
might be able to use your CD sources.

That upgraded KDE packages I already had from the many from
the 10.1 CD install. (which is what 'rpm -Fvh' does, see 'man
rpm'). After the upgrade was finished, I ran 'upall' as root;
[ alias upall='rpm --rebuilddb && updatedb && ldconfig -v &&
update-menus -v -n' ]

Then logged out, back into KDE, using Ctrl+Alt+Bsp to re-start
the X server while I was logged out. If you are setup to auto
login to your desktop, this will bypass the login next step.

For my experience and opinion: _Don't do it_! If you really
want KDE3.3, setup cooker sources and use urpmi to update to KDE
3.3.2, (complete cooker 10.2) You'll be better off. KDE3.3.1
shipped with 10.1 is alpha an buggy quality, IME. Cooker is
currently stable. Do it NOW while cooker is slow for the holidays
YMMV

Re: [newbie] KDE upgrade

2005-01-01 Thread linuxgirlie
I installed KDE 3.3 bu doing the following:

Copy all the KDE files into /tmp
Login as root (for some reason there is a bug, may have been fixed
now) that won't allow you to add media under other users.
Go to Mdkc Control Centre (configure your computer) and add new
media...eg the folder with kde in it.
Once this is done go to install software
Type in KDE
Look for all the files with 3.3.* (* being your version)
Add them, with a tick

Click install.

Sorry if this is to basic, just trying to put it in some sort of
understandable order!!

[newbie] KDE upgrade

2005-01-01 Thread Keith Powell
After several frustrating hours of failure, I am afraid I will have to
ask!

In Mandrake 10.1 Official, I am trying to upgrade KDE to KDE3.3 which
is on disk4 of the Download Edition. But my attempts have been a
complete failure. I have tried everything that I can think of, using
urpmi. None work. :( I also can't get Install Packages to find the
new KDE on disk4. Tried all sorts of "add media" as well.

So, PLEASE someone, in plain language, how does one install KDE3.3
from disk4? I don't need to keep KDE3.2. I can't find the answer in
twiki or the archives.

Very many thanks for any help.

[newbie] kde upgrade

1999-12-21 Thread Eero

To upgrade kde from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 is "kdebase-1.1.2-9mdk.i586.rpm"
sufficient, or are any other packages needed?

Thanks in advance.:)

Regards Eero

[newbie] KDE upgrade double icons

1999-10-09 Thread Scott Miller

I just upgraded my Mandrake 6.0 KDE packages to version 1.1.2 using the RPMs
from Mandrake 6.1. Everything seems to work but I ended up with duplicate
icons and menu entries.

1. Could this have been prevented by using a different upgrade proceedure?

2. Is there an easy way to correct this other than having to delete the
individual icon and menu item duplicates?

TIA

[newbie] KDE Upgrade from Mandrake RPMs???

1999-06-28 Thread John Aldrich

Can one use Mandrake's KDE install RPMs to upgrade a RedHat 6.0 install, or
would one have to do an "upgrade install" of Mandrake to upgrade RedHat's
KDE (just figured since there are supposedly "final" versions of KDE 1.1.1,
I would consider upgrading.)
Thanks...

[newbie] KDE upgrade woes

1999-05-15 Thread Martin Cleaver

I was silly enough to think I, a real newbie, could just get the new
1.1.1. KDE and drop it into my Mandrake + 2.2. kernel + tt fonts setup
(someone helped me with that).

I have qt1.42 and the five KDE 1.1.1 rpms.

I started the install from /usr/src/redhar/RPMS/i386/

It said it would install in /opt/kde

It installed kdesupport but then gives me failed dependencies:
   kdelibs-rh5x is needed by kdebase-1.1.1-1rh5x
   libjscript.so.2 is needed by kdebase-1.1.1-1rh5x
   libkdecore.so.2 is needed by kdebase-1.1.1-1rh5x
   libkdeiu.so.2 is needed by kdebase-1.1.1-1rh5x
   libkfile.so.2 is needed by kdebase-1.1.1-1rh5x
   libkfm.so.2 is needed by kdebase-1.1.1-1rh5x
   libkhtmlw.so.2 is needed by kdebase-1.1.1-1rh5x
   libkimgio.so.2 is needed by kdebase-1.1.1-1rh5x
   libmediatool.so.2 is needed by kdebase-1.1.1-1rh5x

However it then stated that these are harmless but indicated that
/etc/ld.so.conf has invalid entries.

I then said I wanted to use kdm but the installation says that
/opt/kde/bin/kdm does not appear to exist so it is exiting with the
question "is the correct kdebase installed"? I should know!

But then I can add some users.

If I then startx, the screen flashes and then dumps me back in a text
screen with several Mach64 lines about color weight, pixmap cache and
font cache before stating that local host has been added to access
control list and then the error:

/root/.Xclients:/opt/kde/bin/startkde: no such file or directory.

waiting for X server to shut down.

How could I be so silly as to think this would work without hassles that
mean nothing to a non-nerd like me? :-(

Help!

Martin
