And if you're installing a set of binary rpms then they need to have been explicitly created for 7.1. I'm not sure where you might find such an item. Then, besides that there have traditionally been lots of dependency problems when upgrading KDE binaries (some legitimate, some not). If you're up to installing SRPMs then there's still the special tweaks that MandrakeSoft puts into KDE to get it to use the MandrakeLinux menu system that would be missing. Probably the easiest way to get what you want is to install MandrakeLinux 8.0 on you computer. :) -- Alan
[newbie] KDE2 and ~/.xsession-errors bloat
Ever since I started using KDE2, my ~/.xsession-errors file size has been ballooning out of control. I began with beta versions of KDE 2.0 and have been constantly upgrading them until now. I currently use Mandrake's KDE 2.1 RPM release and I still am having the same problem. I don't use KDE as my desktop (I use GNOME), but I use many KDE apps like Konqueror, Kmail and Kedit. Today, I checked my ~/.xsession-errors file after nearly five days of uptime only to find that it was 804.5MB! No, that is not a typo, I mean eight hundred and four point five megabytes! I usually just delete the file when I find that it has grown to a large size. I don't seem to get that many errors; only the occasional konqueror crash. I've not noticed that I lost all the other window managers, I'll have to check that, but I do have a user named Tina on the login gui. So does anyone know what that is all about, and is it safe to delete Tina as a user? Probably need to report to Mandrake and kde.org, it is a bug accountable to one or the other. Could look on the KDE web site to see if the things already been reported. I just got back from a Sun Developers conference in Boston :-) (have to spy on the other people every once in a while). I am about to kick off my build scripts so let's see what happens when I put out some 20010119 RPM's in about 8 hours. I suspect this problem may be fixed. If your a new linux user. Don't! Upgrade to 7.2. The dependencies require a bunch of additional packages and stuff. There's a list of cooker mirrors here: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/cookerdevel.php3 Don't use the cooker rpms. The 7.x compatible KDE 2.1 beta2 rpms are in the /unsupported/i586/kde2.1/ directory. You'll need all the rpms in this dir (56mb). D/L them them into a dir by themselves and install all at once using 'rpm -Uvh *'. The author of these rpms, Chris Molnar, advocates using 'urpmi *.rpm' Depending on your Mandrake version/install, you may get some failed dependencies. You'll then need to d/l those to the dir you create above, and try the 'rpm -Uvh *' (or urmpi) again till the upgrade is successful. Hello, I just downloaded the more recent update of KDE2 at www.kde.org/download for Mandrake7.2. Some of the features has been upgrade such as when you point over an icon on the task bar. the icon enlarged. It's new to me.. but I like it. Also Kdevelop has been added which was not on before. [newbie] KDE2 in 7.2 download
Hi all, I am still unable to find the desktop that shows up on the linux-Mandrake tutorial for KDE. I have only a tool bar at the bottom of the page and no icons at all. The K button is a penguin with Linux written in. Is all this normal with the downloaded 7.2 version? I realy like the look of the desk top in the tutorial. Not sure if I have a complete download or if my CDrom is giving up, cause I had several packages (16 in an attempt at expert/workstation install) that failed to install. Can't tell if that is the CD or the CDrom. Any suggestions are welcome. TIA Dennis M.

Dear All, It did not even occur to me to switch to Enlightenment or Icewm and maybe that will solve these napster -mp3 problems and possibly I could get the Linux Hearts game working in there? Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions about this? Also, I plan to install the new Suse7 that I just got yesterday. I have the linux M 7.2 installed on this machine however I would like to possibly do a dual boot system with the Suse 7. What is the best way to do this without causing problems with my 7.2? Someone asked me if Suse has the complete Xserver. That I do not know yet and I will let you know as soon as I find out.:) Thanks for your help. Marcia

I have a solution for all of your KDE2 problems. Run Enlightenment alone! It leaves KDE2 in the dust when it comes to effeciency, use of system resources, etc. But if yer dependent on a winblows imitating environment stick with your KDE2 bloatware. -- Chad Y. Registered Linux User #195191

Not other than as I said, update XF-4 and KDE2 to Mandrakes latest rpm's. This will also involve updating many other system packages. Use 7.2 final rpms, don't use cooker rpms. As to hardware, add ram and make sure you've got your HDD(s) optimized with 'hdparm'. If you still find KDE2 'unstable', you might try downgrading to XF-3.3.6. If you're still not satisfied, downgrade to KDE1. You might subscribe to the KDE mailing list(s). You'll find most all of the people havin problems with KDE2 _aren't_ runnin Mandrake. I believe you'll also find most understand that KDE2 (like Gnome) is a work in progress, and there's still manys bugs and user issues to work out. hmmm Well, all I can say is that, for me, running KDE is a problem (lots of crashes), but no problem running any of the apps (including konqueror), outside of it. Did you do an upgrade or a fresh install? I had a lot of problems when I did an upgrade, fixed by doing a completely clean install. I agree with you entirely. I *was* under the impression, however, that I was maintaining my system rather well, and that my hardware is of good quality (I made sure to choose each and every component of my computer myself, after careful research). KDE2 is the only group of programmes I have problems with. GNOME works fine, as did KDE1.x. Are there any suggestions on what I can do to improve KDE2's stability? Perhaps I can change some config settings, either in KDE, X, or Linux in general. [newbie] KDE2 and sound
Hey all, I installed 7.2 on Sunday night and so far I am very impressed. I am having a few problems though that hopefully someone can help me with. 1. When I try to configure my soundcard I get the following error: Error in modprobe call! /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/cmpci.o: invalid parameter parm_io /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/cmpci.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/cmpci.o failed /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/cmpci.o: insmod sound-slot-0 failed I was getting the same error with 7.1 but I was able to configure Windows Sound System then. But this is not an option (at least one that I can find) in 7.2. My soundcard is CMD8338 C3D Audio. 2. How can I move my taskbar (under KDE2) from the panel to the top of the screen. I can't seem to find anywhere to change this option. Is there someway to do this by editing some config files? Thanks in advance SC

Install kde2and1stripts.i586.rpm and reboot. the problems should go away. and you should have your menu options for kde2. Hello All, Giving Mandrake 7.0 a spin for a while. Very nice! Many great additions since 6.0. On the contrib. CD I noticed .rpms for kde2. Is this what I think it is? Is this beta or what? If I install the various kde2 .rpms, will I mess up my desktop/system, or will it integrate nicely? I have to admit I miss a couple of apps that I had with SuSE for networking. Where can I find some more info? I poked around a bit, but didn't come up with much. Thanks for your help. Tom

Hello! I have built a new set of binary distributions based on a CVS snapshot at 8:00am EST 1-25-2000. I have created both a RPM and a -BIN.TAR.GZ distribution. To those who have downloaded QTCOPY dated 01-19-2000 - You do not need to update this. Continue using the same qt copy. (file name qtcopy-01192000). This should save you some download time. These binaries are ALPHA code so the only guarantee you have is that they will take up hard drive space. Please read the README in the FTP / HTTPD directory before downloading anything. These binaries are know to work on Redhat 6.1, Mandrake 6.1, and SuSe 6.3, and I think someone got them working on Caldera (no idea which build). If you get them working on something else other than what I just listed, please let me know so I can add them to the list. You MUST install: Qtcopy (or leave it installed) KDESUPPORT KDELIBS KDEBASE And then whatever else you desire. RPM - You will most likely need to use the --nodeps flag and the --force flags. Make sure you install qt copy first. For those upgrading from my last distribution: To be safe you make want to: Mv /opt/kde2 /opt/kde2.old Prior to doing this install. That way you still have your last version. Of course you can do what I do and just over-write it or delete it.
