Re: [newbie] Logging in as root trough telnet
For security reasons. If you REALLY want to do this, move /etc/securetty to /etc/securetty.bak or something similar. Dude ... that would leave a big hole in your security. Linux has deliberately blocked root from logging in remotely. If you really want to do it, then I think you can create a "super user" with access to everything (haven't tried it but told by a friend it can happen) OR: load VNC server on the server and VNC Client on your client and set up a virtual network connection (you will need IP addresses on the machines, it is IP based), that will allow you to operate your server via "remote control" for free Alan > ** Original Subject: [newbie] Logging in as root trough telnet > ** Original Sender: Cameron Kerr <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > ** Original Date: Tue, 08 Feb 2000 09:25:46 +1300 > ** Original Message follows... > > Why is it that I can telnet to my box as an unprivilidged user, but not as > root? > > Cameron Kerr - Computer Technician > Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > Ph:474 3367 or 474 3800 if unavailable > > Cell: 021 2938869 > > > > >** - End Original Message --- ** >
RE: [newbie] Logging in as root trough telnet
Yeah, I thought that might have been the case. Is there a sater way, it's on my local, exclusive network (may connect to 'net one day) -Original Message- From: Steve Wright [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, 8 February 2000 10:29am To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Logging in as root trough telnet Cameron Kerr wrote: > > Why is it that I can telnet to my box as an unprivilidged user, but not as > root? ...erm, now let me think about that for a minute. If anyone could telnet into your box as root I wonder if that might just pose some kinda security risk? Sorry, but seriously though, it would pose an immense security risk to allow someone to telnet as root.

Well said Steve. Now for your next question Cameron ... log on as unprivilaged ... then su --> to root. sneeky these dang penguins. Then you can telnet in "like the big boys" when they say "I couldn't shut it off from the keyboard." But I telneted in and ...bla bla bla ... I don't have it all in hand yet .. but I'm getting in way ovwer my head and ... part time loving it ... Sam
Re: [newbie] Logging in as root trough telnet
Yeah, with telnet, anyone with your ip could just snoop your root pass and that'd be the end of it. You can SSH (secure shell) into your comp and log on as root though. try ssh -l username On Mon, 07 Feb 2000, you wrote: > Cameron Kerr wrote: > > > > Why is it that I can telnet to my box as an unprivilidged user, but not as > > root? > > > > ...erm, now let me think about that for a minute.
