I have had the exact same problem several times lately trying to install the
cooker beta from June or upgrading (urpmi) an 8.2 install to cooker. I was
able to install 8.0 and 8.2 with no problem.

I suspected it was a problem with my new motherboard, a MSI KT3 Ultra with
raid and the newer kernels not getting along. I have since left well enough
alone but would like to go to the 9.0 beta. I just don't know how to fix that
problem. I did try rerunning LILO at one point but I forget where.

I wanted to report it to cooker but had not saved the messages.

I guess Disk Doctor converted it. I did the recommended install originally
so I didn' t choose it. Mandrake "chose" where to install itself.

This is the error I get on bootup. I'd guess it was Ext3 at one time.

Something messed with it!

Thanks for your help.

I did say no. I had already run Norton's Scandisk and Disk Doctor earlier.
Disk Doctor gave me the message you are referring to almost immediately. I
cancelled out. Later, I tried to boot Mandrake 8.2. and I got the error
message I posted earlier so I came here to ask for advice.

I also tried Mandrake's Repair option and it said it couldn't fix my partion
table problem.

I tried to reinstall and I got to this screen:

Choose the petitions you want to format

hda 1{C:} (15MB, /mnt/win_Dos Fat16
hda 2 {D} (12 GB, /mnt/Win-2, Win98, Fat32, LBA-mapped

The options below are preselected

(400MB, /Journalised FS: Ext 3)
(50MB, Swap Linux Swap)

Could hda have been my bootloader? I only had 1 drive before I installed
Linux.

Any help you can give to staighten out this mess will be appreciated.

just for the record, when you run norton windoctor on a drive that has
partitions of unknown type to windows ( i.e. your linux partition )
diskdoctor will barf some BS about your partition table needing to be
"fixed" and ask you if you wanna "correct the problem" always remember
to say "no".

Drop in your CD#1 install and hit F1 at the splash screen then type

rescue

and try re-running LILO.

It appears that Norton did something to the pointer in the MBR

It may also have renumbered partitions which has catastrophic effects on
linux installs. I just discovered that XP installation CAN and WILL
renumber partitions and wreck a working linux system

So if rerunning LILO from rescue does not do the trick a fresh install
may be necessary This could happen if the partitions were renumbered so
that say /dev/hda7 was pointing at / and now points at the swap
partition or something similar...
