You can either install timidity by doing 'cd' to the directory containing timidity and then rpm -ivh --nodeps timidity-blah blah.rpm It is possible that Timidity will not work properly, in which case you can remove it again, and download the .src RPM and compile it with rpm --rebuild timidity-blah.blah.src This will only work if you have the required compiler tools available, and -devel versions of the dependent RPMs (such as kdemultimedia-devel-3.0.5a ) Alternatively you may decide to undo the upgrade and reinstall the old version of kdemultimedia. Super-mount has worked well occasionally in the past; not at all after the next "update/bug-fix" quite often, and for me on this old clunker anyway, flawlessly exactly once. Counting from version 7.1 of Mandrake. It may not seem to be a priority for developers but you are probably correct that it would reduce the anxiety level for new users should it always (gasp!) work. It's difficult; however, to try to convince any developer (whether the ones on the payroll, or the fine volunteers that work in their "free time" 'cause they love it) to chase bugs out of something that bores them to tears. Especially something a developer wouldn't likely be using anyway. I want to thank you for letting the list know that your problem has been worked around though. Too many people never let the rest of us know whether the advice given was of any use. Your doing so is a welcome change. [OT rant] Enjoy Mandrake while you can. If the doom'n' gloomers on the mailing lists, and the chilling statements in e-mails from Mandrake-Linux, have any factual basis we'll all be looking for a new distribution soon unless we help "save the company." Become "Club" members, buy shares, or donate, in other words. In the interest of 'helping the cause,' I've bought retail box sets for every (at least) second release since 7.1. At times more than one set per release when a friend 'borrowed' but didn't return it. That wasn't possible for 9.0 (out of sequence for me) since the damned box sets weren't in stores in anything resembling a reasonable time frame here in western Canada. As soon as it's made easy and I don't have to pay double the posted price in a lump sum I'll jump right into the Club. Canadian "Monopoly Money" isn't the worst currency, but it sure as hell ain't US dollars. Adding the option to pay at $10 or $15 per month would make "helping" a real attainable probability for a lot of low income people, but there's no provision for that. Nor does it seem there's any interest at Mandrakesoft for making it so. Is Mandrake at all interested in my (and probably many others) ongoing $15 CDN per month? It would seem not. Instead of "sitting there" you can watch all sorts of things happen. Some day I'll understand what's happening, but for the time being, it's just gratifying to know I've not frozen. It is likely you have selected a slow server for updates. Some of them are truly dreadful. You can get a better idea of the update process if you run it from the command line instead of the GUI. You will then see a download progress indication. In a root terminal urpmi.update -a (to update the list of available updates) urpmi --update --auto-select (To update all packages for which an update is available) If you want a fast update mirror try this one. ftp://ftp.rediris.es/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake/updates/9.0/RPMS derek -- -- www.jennings.homelinux.net Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Mandrake update
I just installed Mandrake 9.0 on my system today for the first time. I am puzzled by the behavior of the Mandrake update system. When I start it, it (seemingly) just sits there for three or four or five minutes doing nothing. The first time I tried the update, I thought the system had locked up or something and nothing was happening. But apparently, it's working, but moving very S-L-O-W-L-Y. Another two or three minutes elapses between all the other steps of determining what packages are needed, contacting the mirror sites, and finally downloading and installing the software. The downloads themselves seem to proceed at a normal rate for my connection. Then, once the software is downloaded and installed, I can't seem to kill rmpdrake. It just sits there. After it tells me the software was installed successfully, and I OK out of that little box, then I hit the "quit" button, but the button won't depress, suggesting that the app is locked up or just not responding. I have to kill it with xkill. Is this normal behavior? I don't have a particularly fast connection--I'm on dial-up at 56K--but coming from a Debian distro (Libranet), the whole thing seems clunky and slow to me, and it strikes me as a bad idea that newbies can't tell if the update operation is actually moving along, or if it's locked up. Update or Upgrade? The reason I ask is the link below is for ftp security mirror sites for updates for all supported versions. Is there a reason you don't just use Mandrake Update tools (Software manager) in the Mandrake Control Center? As long as you are connected to the 'net it should find a list of mirrors that can choose from, just look for the applicable country code in the URL, or at least the nearest one. Any of the mirrors should work but I can sort of understand the request for a "local" one. Or if you're really stuck for whatever reason go to the Mandrake Home Page and follow the links from here: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/ to here: http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/advisories/ shows security update information. to here: http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/ftp.php all ftp security mirrors for all supported versions. You'll still have to know the country code to find the closest one though. If you are looking to upgrade to version 9.0 you may want to rethink it since it's somewhat problematical for some hardware configurations and isn't always a clean/easy solution. For upgrades start at the Mandrake Home page and click the Download link. You can follow it to pages that probably have what you want. Good luck. When I try to use the Mandrake update I get a list of different servers. If I then try to connect to one of these, there will be an error message that this server is not available. this is true for all the listed servers. [newbie] Mandrake Update
I'm having a problem using Mandrake Update. When I try to define sources of security updates it takes a very long time to add a source when i select a ftp site. This seems to occur regardless of whether or not i enter an anonymous login name and password (email address) in the appropriate fields. Then once i have this all properly configured and i go to download packages in Mandrake Update and get errors that the pakcages have bad file names or can't be found. I've had little trouble manually getting packages using ftp and installing them myself. I'm using Mandrake release 8.1 which comes with Software Manager 1.3-103mdk. Any idea what could be the problem? Les Henderson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Okay, can someone fill me on the secret? I'm subscribed to the Mandrake Security mailing list and I have received notices of several updates. The e-mails tell to me to "upgrade automatically, use MandrakeUpdate" , but every time I run it the only thing that shows up is a kernel update. When I tried to update some of my RPMs with Mandrake Update they failed. I noticed that under the importance column they were listed as "not found". The one which had an importance listing of bugfix or security installed OK. I am using the ftp.sunet.se source. Is this something that can be fixed by finding a new security update source? Ok Shane. How did the upgrade go and how did you go about doing it? I may follow your foot steps; so try not to make me fall in hole. I have downloaded the three 8.2 iso files. Oops! I just reread your question and I realise that I misunderstood it the first time. My apologies :-) A six-hour wait is not normal at all. You should be able to check through an RPM programme like gnoRPM or Kpackage, or from the command line (rpm), if your files have been installed. Just look up the package name and ensure it is the updated version. Re: [newbie] mandrake-update service
Upgrading 7.2 to 8.0 is not really a recommended exercise, despite it being an installation option. This is because there have been many changes made between 7.2 and 8.0, so an upgrade is quite likely to break something. Upgrading also takes far longer, since your system must be analysed to see *how* it can be upgraded -- something that doesn't need to be done with a clean installation. If everything appears fine afterwards, then you should have nothing to worry about. If you go to a console screen (press ctrl+alt+F1), you should see the version number of your Mandrake displayed on the screen. [newbie] Mandrake update problems
I am running Mandrake 8.0 on my current system and I am having problems with the update program. I have had no problem using the program to update the packages that I already have. I created a update source to a local computer and it worked fine. What I am having problems with is using the program to get and install new packages. I have tried to create a source pointing to several computers but I can't get them to work. They will load the hdlist file and display all the packages but when I select one and try to install it the program errors out and says there was a problem downloading it. I know that I'm just not setting this up right. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Thanks Keith
Re: [newbie] Mandrake Update fails every time
Thanks for the suggestion, however, when I tried to uninstall some packages in order to upgrade them (cups, rpmdrake, rpm, rpmtools), a box appeared saying that all these other packages would be removed to satisfy dependencies. I clicked on "ok," and software manager closed without uninstalling anything. Software Manager used to work just fine with no problems the very first time I installed 8.0 on this machine, and has ceased to do so since, even when using fdisk to wipe out the linux partiton and reinstall from scratch. WHOA! from the content of the last couple of emails on this I get the impression that you have mandrake 7.2 and are trying to update to 8.0 packages Simply forget it! You cannot use mandrakeUpdate in that fashion. Way WAY too much delta, plus incompatible binaries and libraries. 8.0 is backwards compatible to 7.2, but 7.2 is not forwards compatible to 8.0. We did modify library and packaging policies in 8.0 so a similar situation NEVER happens again, but this one remains--the difference in library dependencies alone is enough. Civileme
Re: [newbie] Mandrake Update fails every time
Well this email wanted me to use the Software Manager. I tried it on the list of Security updates that I had downloaded. Software Manager did not work it hung, tried the Package Manager, it hung (would not work) tried the MandrakeUpdate, it hung (would not work), tried rpm -Uvh it did nothing. At this time I was thinking I really had a hosed system. I fell back to a windoze soluation, rebotted, system had only been running 7 hours, and everything worked. MY POINT Jay did you try and reboot and then try the Software Manager. It is a nice tool and makes installing very easy. One thing that I did notice though is that it does a install, not a upgrade.. i.e. the package that your replacing does not get removed as in a upgrade. Another nice tool is the urpm it is a lot like the apt-get from Debian and is really nice to use. You can find info for it on the Mandrake web page, or from www.google.com/linux do a search. --- Jay DeKing <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I use Mandrake Update as a reference tool only. Re: [newbie] Mandrake Update fails every time
I use Mandrake Update as a reference tool only. It has never once removed the previously existing version of anything I have updated. What I do is open a terminal window and login as su, then run Mandrake Update to see what needs an upgrade; I open a browser window and go to whichever mirror Mandrake Update is looking at; download the rpm's and go to my su terminal. There I do an rpm -Uvh on the new rpms. This updates them properly, and you get usable feedback if there are conflicts or dependency problems rather than the terse "update failed" message that Mandrake Update gives too often. After doing the manual installs, go back to Mandrake Update and tell it to update the package list; the ones just installed will no longer be on the list. I've tried the rpm --rebuilddb command and it makes no difference, because if the older rpms are still there Mandrake Update won't notice the new ones. It looks at the oldest version currently installed. I wish I could take credit for coming up with this procedure, but I had the same problem when I first started using Mandrake and another kind list member clued me in to the limitations of the Update program. Re: [newbie] Mandrake Update fails every time
You need to remove the resources you do not want to use from the lists if you want the update to work properly. Then you must specify the external source precisely. There are very few updates available as yet, but I would suspect that if it is aaying already installed on packages defnitely not there, then rpm --rebuilddb from a command line in a terminal window, logged as superuser, migth make all the differnce. If you really want to update, I recommend you use software manager to REMOVE the files that will be updated, then in a separate process, to install the new files. In some areas, rpmdrake/software manager is still very much bleeding-edge. As far as WinNT comparisons, hmmm. I wasn't aware that you could update 2000+ packages over the web with it. [newbie] Mandrake Update fails every time
Each time I try to update my installation, rpmdrake fails, saying the packages already exists. The "installable files" shown in the "updates only" list are all newer versions than those installed. Is there any way of forcing this program (Software Manager) to *update* rather than just perform an install? Or is it back to the command line to download/update the individual packages? TIA Alex So far, I must say, I'm not overly impressed with Linux (Mandrake 8.0), having come from a Windows NT environment, with 15 years computing experience.

I am just on a learning expedition. It does not matter if I destroys my LM 7.2. I can just reinstall it. I have tried every key combination I could think of. Still can not get to the bottom of the error messages. But no matter. Good old alt, ctrl & f2 then kill will take care of it. But it has been a good learning experience. Charles
Re: [newbie] Mandrake Update
What Alan says is basically true, but if you're brave at heart, here's a method that can enable one to upgrade to glibc 2.2 on a 7.2 install. http://www.pclinuxonline.com/Help___How_To/Glibc-2_2/glibc-2_2.html I followed these instructions here except where they say do a --force --nodeps, do a --test and get the other 2 - 4 dependencies. I haven't had a problem, yet (being the operative word) and have been using this set up for about 9 or 10 days. Oh I did upgrade my menu app tho it suggests not to. But it was necessary to that I wouldn't get an error when I upgrade-menu after installing kde2.1.1. This should keep you from getting a screen full of errors. I think you can scroll through the screens by typing tab + pgup/pgdown (or the arrows), or maybe its ctrl + arrows. H*ll, I can't remember. Experiment with those extra keys. But you can change to another console by typing F2, F3 and so on and back again. (I find that handy.) Anyway, good luck. -s On Friday 06 April 2001 01:37 pm, you wrote: > I am trying to install glibc-2.2.2-4mdk using Mandrake Update (so I can > install XFree86). Get the glibc-2.1.3.18.3mdk version that is on the 7.2 update mirror sites. Mandrake Update shouldn't be accessing the glibc-2.2.2-4mdk version if you're running 7.2. -- Alan
[newbie] Mandrake Update
I am trying to install glibc-2.2.2-4mdk using Mandrake Update (so I can install XFree86). The install fails with errors (lots os them). I get so many errors that the list goes off the bottom of my screen. I can find no way to scroll to the bottom of the error list. Therefore I cannot get to the 'force' or 'quit' buttons. How does one scroll to the bottom of the error list? My system: LM 7.2 AMD 500mhz 128M ram Thanks charles
[newbie] Mandrake Update is broken...
My Mandrake update worked fine for a couple weeks. I used it succesfully quite a few times. Now it loads up and when I tell it to update it's list it goes through the motions but nothing ever shows up. The modem even pulls data by the looks of things. Anyone got an idea what's wrong? --Matt

Has anyone tried this tool? It's relatively new apparently and is on FreshMeat. Here's the link. Apparently it installs all updates and dependencies and reports on what was done to the sysadmin... Re: [newbie] Mandrake Update fails
I have had good experiences with some things. I just do a few at a time. For instance I have no more updates listed under the category "bugfix" I had 4 and did them this lunch hour. Some have dependency conflicts and unfortunately as far as I know it has no dependency checking. I wonder if anyone has gotten their updates list down to nothing... --Matt - Original Message - From: "H.J.Bathoorn" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, February 15, 2001 11:44 AM Subject: Re: [newbie] Mandrake Update fails > On Thursday 15 February 2001 02:41, you wrote: > > Dave Horsfall wrote: > > > Mandrake 7.2 on a nondescript P133, 32Mb memory. > > > > > > > > > order, instead of making a dependency tree). > > > > > > > > > Anyone seen this? Re: [newbie] Mandrake Update fails
Dave, I concur with Romna,...download the updates seperately from multiple sites if necessary. Then install them in a logical sequence. Here's a tip that saved me a few times - When installing the KDE updates, make sure that you're running Gnome, and not KDE. In Drakconf, disable as many services as possible,...keep only those absolutely required to run your PC , then do a full reboot to unload the disabled services and daemons, and then do your updates. Try using Kpackage instead of the "software-updater", and be prepared to jump on the net to grab associated libraries from www.rpmfind.net One other thing,...if you have a CD burner, burn all the updates to CD, in case you need to re-install everything later. I've been doing this for a month or so, and it's really paid off having the updates on hand. Good Luck! Dan LaBine Maximum LAN's Ltd. Registered Linux User #190712

Don't update things you don't use (Apache?), uninstall them. The newest glibc for 7.2 is on cooker mirrors in the /unsupported dir, same for KDE2, Xfree86, egcs, and some others. There's been so many updates to 7.2, it's better to only do 2,3,or 4 at a time rather than 'select all'. It's advised to install the 'MandrakeUpdate' update first. Also with the larger files (mb's) it's better to d/l them and install manually. Between these partial update installs it's a good idea to regularly run 'rpm --rebuilddb' -- Tom Brinkman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Galveston Bay
