Actually, there is something we can all do about bittorrent, or at least those
of us on high speed connections: leave your bittorrent client running, even
after you've downloaded everything, so that other people can upload from you.

I did this for a while on the Windoze machine I used to download Mandrake in
the first place. But I had to keep going on a vpn for work, which got in the
way, I've been meaning to start doing it on my Mandrake box, but I don't have
the iso's there at the moment.

Actually I wasn't trying to be cyncial at all. :-)

To me a public/late beta is exactly what we're getting with the Community
Edition. And I'm not saying that it's a bad thing rather it's a good thing.
It's a test on a much larger scale than Mandrake would otherwise be able to
do and with some of the issues found in 10CE which were resolved by 10OE I'd
say it's a very good plan. One that I'm happy to be part of.

Now if we could just do something about bittorrent. :-)

Thanks Charlie, John and Carroll for your replies.

I was off the list for some time and lost track of what was happening to
Community.

Am now much clearer about the situation.

Cheers

Keith

Of course, there is always the possibility that the OP has some older CD's
that are labelled "Mandrake 10 Community)".

The Community label is for public betas of Mandrake releases. We all get to
be guinea pigs before the rest of the world gets a crack at the official
relase.

In any event the "new" Community will be 10.1 which is still in alpha stage.

I believe Community is 10.0 + updates. I could be wrong but probably not since
the tree structure seems to be a moving target for the last 8 months.

10.1 is based on Alpha1+new packages. An install from the cooker snapshot
(Alpha1 ISOs) would in all likelihood require an immediate ftp "upgrade" to
the 10.1 tree. It would still be quicker (maybe) than a full FTP install of
10.1 though.

There should be another Alpha, or possibly a Beta snapshot soon anyway.

Thanks for the information.

I thought that Mandrake were keeping the 10 Community label. Didn't realise
that it had changed to 10.1 beta

Mandrake Community was a beta, replaced by Official.

There's now 10.1 beta.

2004-07-25 Thread Keith Powell
What is the situation regarding Mandrake10 Community, please?

Is it still very similar as Official, or has it forked a lot with regard to
the package versions in it?

I can't find anything about Community on the Mandrake site, can't find the
information on Google, and can't download it just to find out. I only have a
dial-up connection.

Many thanks for any information.

Cheers

Keith
