[newbie] MandrakeMove Download edition config.

2004-10-03 Thread Simon Utley
Hi, does anyone know if you can configure Shorewall on the download edition of
MandrakeMove. I can open the files as root but when I go to save the newly
configured file it won't allow me. Is this because I am reading the file off
the CD Rom and am unable to write to it?
I cannot get the MCC firewall set up either, default is "no Firewall". If I
change its configuration it does not save the changes and I cannot get
iptables to start.(I presume they are tied into this firewall).
Can one do these config changes with the Mandrakesoft packaged product only?
It also doesn't recognise my USB Flash Drive although it is on the list of
recognised USB drives for MdkMove.
Simon.

[newbie] MandrakeMove, Printing problem

2004-08-15 Thread Graham Neal
Dear Club, with all the hundreds of Club Emails I have received, cannot
understand why no one has replied tomine, as under. I have in fact
solved the scanner problem, that now works perfectly, but only if I use
as Root!! perhaps this is a key to the printer solution.

On an Acer Aspire 1300 laptop, AMD, MandrakeMove recognises and installs
my HP Deskjet 960C with four suitable drivers and says printer ready and
waiting but any printing job is just recorded on the job list with
"cancelled" and the printer never starts, have tried every combination
of reinstalling, with no success. Similarly, surprisingly this OS is
the first to have the drivers for my Epson Perfection 1250 (photo)
Scanner. For this it lights the Photo light straight away but does not
continue the boot of the main scanner. Graham

I'm not sure this was meant to do anything other then allow folks to preview
Mandrake and what it looks like. I never got the impression it was meant to
do anything else.

How many screensavers should have gotten loaded when all the fixes are
applied. I only have one basically and a random selection and A black
screen
 Should there have been more.

I had gone into a config GUI that asked me for the root password before
doing the check for the screensavers but had exited it.

Well now I have updated everything, and there was one update where the
description said it would fix my screensavers. But... They are still not
there?? I have rebooted just to be sure (yeah I know, a windows thing to
do), but no luck. If I log in on my KDE as root, they are all there and
they are working...
Any ideas please?

Btw. the update tool is really nice :)

I had a pen drive in a laptop a couple of days ago that I couldn't access via
the gui, but I could rw via a root terminal so I didn't check the gui problem
out, I just assumed I had a permissions problem. A /mnt/memorystick (I think
it was, I don't have the laptop here) was created when I booted with the
drive in place. You have tried a root terminal

I have d/l'd and made the CD and run Mandrake Move. The first time it detects
the usb flash stick and the second time to boot it can't find it. No USB
device detected. The 128 MB memory stick is Advance Modules 2.0 usb. It
shows up on the USB view but I can not access it in any way. This is the
second device to do this so I know it is the software not the hardware.
Anyone else had this happen? I have been searching the forum but not looked

I've been using Knoppix for 6 months now as a rescue tool, and tested MM
for the same purpose yesterday when I saved "The ONLY copy of my
thesis!!! SOB!!" for a young woman who appears to know quite a lot about
quantum electrodynamics but nothing at all about backups. You boot the
machine, mount the remaining readable hard drive partitions (usually
automatic), connect to the network (all in the GUI) and save the data to
your Samba server where it should have been backed up in the first
place.

You restrain yourself from announcing that you usually get paid with
sexual favors for work like this by remembering that you are married to
a formidable woman, the code of conduct forbids messing with students,
and with the thought that a person so lacking in common sense would
probably babble through the whole thing anyway.

MM looks very slick. It's obviously based on the "Discovery," one CD
version of 9.2, which is why you only get KDE. The down-loadable edition
recognizes a USB key but has no way to save the configuration to either
one of those or to a hard disk. That's what you get with the box: they
recompile with one new pragma and you buy a fairly expensive USB key
from them. It may even be worth it. I travel a lot and frequently have
to use "strange" Windows machines to check on my email and to monitor
experiments. Having an OS on a CD and USB key that I could stick into
any modern PC without doing a thing to the underlying OS or leaving a
trace behind and *not having to to any reconfiguring* would be a good
thing. I *hate* laptops.

[newbie] MandrakeMove

2003-12-09 Thread Lee Wiggers
Okay, I've been lurking for a week on this.

At the usual risk of sounding stupid, what is this disk good for?

All it's done is irritate me because it boots into kde when I had
such a time sorting out all the installs on my assorted boxes.

Doesn't seem to do anything memorable though. Can't save anything
either. Doesn't sing and dance.

Beside basic mdk love, why would anyone buy it?

Enlighten me.
