xpdf for viewing. The only .pdf creation I do is letter attachments
to those less fortunate (non-linux). OpenOffice has a automagic
.pdf button now. Be sure to proof the output, though.

Ok, thanks a lot to your guys. Its worked very well. But no one told me
the reason why doesn't the MandrakeUpdate calls this program
automatically? Also, is this program a part of gnome package or
mandrake? Some details would help me learn more.

Also, what do you guys use to view/create/modify the pdf files on linux?
What is the software for that you would recommend?

Try this:

su to root and enter
update-menus -v
then do the same in your user account.

Hi Nabil. Don't know if this will help your particular situation or not but

update-menus -v

I did not see a reply to you, so here is what I do. In a console type su and
then give the root password. then type in
rpm --rebuilddb && updatedb && update-menus -v
the last is only if the update would have added or changed a menu item. HTH

[newbie] MandrakeUpdate

2004-01-23 Thread Amichai Rotman
Hi,

I have been trying to update the Kernel package suggested by
MandrakeUpdate. The installation failed a few times, even using
different sources, stating that the sig file is 0 (zero) size.

I used a regular FTP client to d/l the pakage and used rpm -ivU to
install it as an Update.

So far all well. The new Kernel version is installed and running.

Here's the question: Why does the package appear in the Updates ?

How do I re-build MandrakeUpdate's DB?

Thanks,

Put CD1 in your drive and in a root terminal window type

 urpmi.addmedia --distrib cdrom removable:///mnt/cdrom

It will put all the CDs in at once

[newbie] MandrakeUpdate question.

2002-10-05 Thread Dimitry

I am running Mandrake 9.0 in KDE. In Mandrake
Control Center-->Software Management-->Software Sources Manager, there are
4 sources: CD1, CD2, CD3 (of the distro) and "update_source". I wanted to remove
"update_source" so I can change the FTP mirror, but I accidentally removed all
sources. How do I get them back now: CD1, CD2, and CD3 sources?
Will it matter for upgrading the
packages now that the sources (3CDs) aren't listed? Please
help.

[newbie] MandrakeUpdate failed to connect

2002-08-17 Thread frame

Is this just another buggy tool for messing up my config
or does it work in some way? Can it connect via proxy?
I have Mandrake 9 beta2. I always configure my network
by hand. Here is what ifconifg gave me when I started
MandrakeUpdate:
before: RX bytes:21796890 (20.7 Mb) TX bytes:2315216 (2.2 Mb)
after: RX bytes:21796890 (20.7 Mb) TX bytes:2315216 (2.2 Mb).
Shouldn't it even try to connect? Or give any senseful error message?
I just get "Couldn't connect!". Have I to change some mdk-specific files to
become this working?

Thx in advance,
Frank.

Are you saying that when you try to download the package it's not found?
Or does it say 'not found' next to the package version listed in
software manager? If it's the latter, don't worry. That just means it
can't find the importance of the update. Sometimes it will say not
found, others will say security.

Are you using PPC 8.2?

Here's the latest from the Newsletter if you are

8.2 PPC Errata:
Error scenario: The 8.2 PPC Software Manager doesn't successfully
retrieve software updates.
Solution: Manually download and install 'grpmi-8.2-3.1mdk.ppc.rpm' from
any of the FTP locations (such as
ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrake/updates/ppc/8.2/RPMS/).
The next time the Software Manager is run, the ability to download and
install updates is restored.

Another suggestion is change the mirror you are pointed at. Also if you are
on 56K be patient while the database is built. Can't help more than that
sorry.

You may be trying to download too much. Occasionally MUpd finds that
fubar-1.2-3 is available, but by the time it gets around to doing that,
after downloading everything else, dubar -1.2-4 has taken its place
already. This can then upset the whole lot of downloads and installs. It
shouldn't, but sometimes it does. Before you click Cancel on MUpd, have a
look in /var/cache/grpmi and see if (some of ) your packages are actually
there, and install them by hand. I do this every time MUpd gets a
bellyache and it has saved me a lot of re-downloads.

Otherwise, just keep trying different mirrors. For cooker purposes,
ftp.ciril.fr is pretty good at the moment, but last year I had more joy
with ftp.sunet.se

[newbie] MandrakeUpdate - where to get a list or sources

Really dumb question folks. Where can I get a list of ftp/http sites to pass

interested only in security updates.

I looked on the Mandrake site but didn't find anything obvious. Course if it
was obvious then I guess I wouldn't be sending this mail now

Prior to Mandrake 8.1 spent a lot of time with Debian - which it were that
easy with RPM!!

[newbie] MandrakeUpdate problems

2001-12-21 Thread Andre Dubuc

I would like to get the latest Security Update, especially for glibc, but I'm
having problems (again) actually getting MU to work.

The ftp site I've used in the past was ftp://ftp.ciril.fr but it seems to
have gone bye-bye (i.e., nothing happens when the source lists are loaded).
Yet, "ciril" is on my MU "Updates only" list. However, after connecting to
the web, the lists load, but nothing shows up for updates. That cute little
slider keeps going and going, but the update area is blank.

I've checked "details" in kppp to see if anything is happening, and for a
short period, there's some activity. I've checked /var/cache/urpmi and it
shows some of the latest updates, but why don't they show up in MU??

I decided to delete the source in MU, and try again. Now, I can't get the
"ciril" source to stick. No matter what I do, after I press "OK" it
disappears. (Am I supposed to do this while on the Internet, perhaps? I can't
remember how I did it before.)

If anyone has any ideas, tricks, or even a better mirror source, I'd
appreciate any help I can get on this.

Btw, where would I find a list of mirrors for MU security updates?
Tia,
Andre

[newbie] mandrakeupdate

2001-08-28 Thread antoine rivoire

hi every body.
here is the problem:
i installed lm8, and mandrakeupdate wouldn't work. (wouldn't fetch server
list for updates)
i looked through the old messages about that and found where civileme said:
do a rpm --rebuilddb, that should do the trick
well i did it because civileme is always right.
and, must have been my unlucky day, he was wrong (in mycase anyway).
now it is well and trully broken. here is what i get when trying to open it
from konsole:
MandrakeUpdate: error while loading shared libraries: libgtkmdk-0.1.so.2:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

now, how do i trace what that is and what package to reinstall?

[newbie] MandrakeUpdate wont work

2001-08-27 Thread Peter Watson

I still can't get MandrakeUpdate to get the list of mirrors for security
updates. However I have found the following in .xsession-errors

=
* Connected to www.linux-mandrake.com (63.209.80.235)
> GET /mirrorsfull.list HTTP/1.0
Host: www.linux-mandrake.com

I assume that this refers to my problem, if anyone can explain what it means
I would be grateful.

2001-08-26 Thread Peter Watson

I've been trying MandrakeUpdate but cant make it work.

First it wont update a list of mirror sites. To try and get round this I
found the address of an FTP site on Mandrakes web site and input this
manually.

The adding source thingy seemed to work and the site appeared on the list of
sources, but then when I hit ok I just reloaded my CD sources and my new
source address had disappeared fom the list of sources.

Very grateful for any explanations or suggestions on how to get this working

[newbie] MandrakeUpdate problem

2001-04-14 Thread Michel Clasquin

About 19 times out of 20, Mandrake update gets me the list of packages, then
when I select some and hist "get updates" it just goes back and updates the
list again instead of actually fetching the rpms! Unless I enable my ISP's
proxy servers: then it won't even get the listing.

I've done the rpm --rebuilddb thing and i have tried different sites. I am on
dial-up, 56K

Any ideas?

I have a 650 MHz Duron running LM 7.2 When I try to install packages using
MandrakeUpdate I get an error saying that the packages have been installed.
However, the installed version number and the current version number in MU
are different and the packages continue to show up every time I bring up
MandrakeUpdate?

Any ideas

Oops. I spoke too soon.

Mandrake 7.2
I am still unable to update rpm (which is where the librpmio.so.0 file that
I need lives) using MandrakeUpdate.

I get a dependency error, i.e. glibc >=2.1.92 is required.
I currently have glibc-2.1.3-16mdk.i586.rpm installed.

However, when I try to update to glibc-2.2-12mdk.i586.rpm, MandrakeUpdate
retrieves the 12MB file and then comes up with the following unhelpful
requestor:

"Error. Package can't be installed glibc-2.2-12mdk.i586.rpm"

How can I find the cause of this error?
Will MandrakeUpdate ever work?
My brain hurts!

I am trying to upgrade my Mandrake 7.2 system using MandrakeUpdate.

When I try to do these two upgrades I receive an error message saying:

librpmio.so.0 is needed.

Can anyone please advise me where to find librpmio.so.0 and how to install
it?

The easiest and best way to do this is to download the necessary rpm's
from where ever...rpmfind.net..., uninstall the current netscape rpm's

Re: [newbie] MandrakeUpdate as user -- SOLVED!

1999-10-24 Thread Ernest N. Wilcox Jr.

I don't know about how update keeps track of what needs installing, but when
you did the update, did Mandrake-update reload the available updates list? It
should have, and the screen package should not have been on the list at that
time (following the update). Check that the package was sucessfully installed
with RPM or KRPM. If the previous version is listed as still being installed,
then that may be the culprit. This is just a shot in the dark, but worth
looking at. Then you will have a better idea where the problem is comming from,
and perhaps what needs fixing.

do I configure MandrakeUpdate? do I have to wait till 6.1 ?
