my new hobby is putting a different start up screen on any win product that I
have to repair from a virus related problem twice. the second time, they get
this as the start screen, while I watch them boot it up :

Alastair:
Large bodies of water don't seem to make any difference -- most of them here
are idiots, too. Say "Linux" and they get the panicked look of a deer
standing in the middle of the road, or else they edge towards a phone so that
they can dial 911 to report an evil terrorist hacker on the premises. I did
get lucky once at a local store when I was buying the guts of this system --
the clerk was doing graduate work at NCSU in Computer Science, and was a
long-time Debian guy. He gave me some good advice, and even sent me a couple
of followup e-mails. Sadly, he has soon afterwards completed his degree
and moved on to much bigger and better things, so it's back to the blank
stare/panic response.

As for the original post: Could we cut out this emphasis on uptime? It's a
sensitive subject for us older guys.

One for the non-British list members :P

Out of interest (as some slashdot and kuro5hin items are difficult to
understand otherwise) ... which US computer stores are equivalent to PC
World?

At PCW employees only know, at maximum, about what's physically there on
the shelves, extended warranties are pushed, you pay the full
manufacturer's price unless someone's feeling generous, attempts at
haggling are met with the Stare of Death and (as noted) PCW is a
Microsoft fiefdom. The only good thing is that they usually have an
excellent stock of Belkin cables, including obscure ones.

Re: [newbie] New Hobby

I think the aim is to weaken Microsoft rather than to strengthen GNU/Linux.
Microsoft loses over $US125 per XBox sold, and they hope to recoup those costs
through the sale of games. Despite this, MS have lost billions on the XBox
already. If you can buy an XBox, put GNU/Linux on it and run any software you
want, there would be no reason to buy games from MS and they'd lose even more
money. XBox sales will probably go up since software can now be run freely on
it, which will make things even worse for MS. With MS severely weakened, it will
be easier for alternate technologies and companies to mount a decent challenge
to MS in _all_ its markets (not just OSs).

The XBox is MS's greatest weak spot. Exploiting it is IMHO the best way to
topple the giant.

Michael,

See http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/

Also not that someone will dump $100,000 into the project
each time the porting team completes each of two tasks.

You'd think there are better place to dump $200,000 into
the Linux community. Odd.

Re: [newbie] New Hobby

I do that on occasion too.

I have to move in a couple months and was looking for new
work when I came across a job for a network admin. I'm not
really interesting in the job, but the description mentioned
that it was a Windows network that will soon be upgraded "to
Windows 2000 or Windows XP".

I couldn't resist. I wrote the company back and asked why
they were burdening their company with the expense and
licsensing associated with those products when Linux is
available.

They didn't respond. Not yet anyway :-)

I plan to start a new "hobby" -- whenever I'm at a computer show or
store, I'm going to go around and ask about different products saying --
"does that have a driver for Linux".

I'll try not to become too well known, or the vendors will see "that one
nut who asks about Linux drivers". (I'll try to buy something every
once in a while, also.)

Anybody want to take up the same hobby?
