Re: [newbie] Printing Problems HP 5L - Open Office Calc

2004-02-24 Thread Weiers Coetser

Thanks: I Got it sorted out.
I did not notice in the past that I actually had to click or double click on
the HP 5L printer at the top in the printer manager window in order to
access the jobs for that specific printer. I just took it for granted that
since it is the only printer on my system, it would automatically show the
jobs.

My computer was set on the Generic Unix LPD Print System. I've now changed
it to CUPS. Would it make a difference?

The left pane will then show 'Print System Browser' You can stop jobs in

I'm using Mandrake 9.1 and had printer/Kghostview
problems (mostly crashing when i tried to print) I
tracked down some KDE bug reports on the subject, (i
wish i wrote them down) and i traced my problem to a
problem with using CUPS and kghostview while a kppp
connection was established. weird huh? anyway i changed
my print system to the generic unix LPD print system
and haven't had a problem since then. Just my $.02.

I just noticed this with Mandrake cooker 9.2 beta 2 and I am not sure yet
if it's KDE specifically. This much I do know - kde programs that handle
pdf won't handle pdf anymore. Forthermore printing (via acroread, which
uses kprinter) puts the print job in kprint job viewer but that launches
a perl that eventually (read real soon now) eats up all available ram and
swap.

I'm updating via urpmi at the moment - maybe that will fix it. This is the
first time I have noticed this issue...

Hello Roland

I once, long time ago faced the same problem with my
old HP695C DeskJet printer but in LM 8.1 not in 8.2
that I'm running right now. I did the following: from
the Mandrake Control Center I removed completely the
printer, went to SysVInit from the root account GUI
and restarted CUPS server. I went on to the Mandrake
Control Center and reinstalled the Printer choosing
another driver than the recommended one. Everything
worked fine. And everytime I faced problems I was
shutting down and restarting the CUPS server.
Sometimes when this didn't work and my printer was
still printing crap, I rebooted.

Hope this helps temporarily

Greetings

LPR is an ancient printing technology originally designed in the 1970s (IIRC)
for line printers. Until only a few years ago, it was the the default printing
system on most distributions. LPR has many shortcomings, and many would say that
it lived far past its use-by date.

CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) is an entirely new system that has replaced
CUPS in most *NIX distributions. It is fully network and Internet aware, and is
far more suitable for today's printers that LPR ever was.

Mandrake offers both LPR and CUPS (and a few others, I think), but the default
is CUPS. There is no need to use LPR, as everything can be done with CUPS. For
best results, install the xpp package, and then instruct your applications to
use 'xpp' as their printing command. XPP is a Mandrake package that allows extra
control over your prinitng.

When gv displays a file exactly as it appears on the printer, CUPS,
GhostScript, and the printer driver work perfectly. The problem is in
the PostScript file which the application generated when you have used
the printing command of it.

If you cannot adjust the output format within your KDE application, this
is a bug of the application. Also the not remembering of paper sizes and
default printers is a bug of KDE. Please report all this on

[newbie] Printing problems with Kmail and Konqueror

2000-11-30 Thread Scott and Janet Miller

Configuration:
LM 7.2 GPL edition
Mandrake Updates installed
CUPS updates recommended on Mandrake Forum installed
HP Laserjet 6L with foomatic + ljet4 driver
HP Deskjet 812C with foomatic + stp-gimp-print driver

When printing from Kmail and Konqueror, text at page bottom is cutoff
and overlaps onto next page where the first line is also cutoff.
Problem occurs with both printers although the Deskjet completely
misses printing the last line on the page. Also, long lines are
sometimes truncated on the right side of the page.

Printing to a file and viewing the output with gv displays the problems
exactly as it's printed. Printing text files using Enscript, XPP, and
Qt-Cups all seem to print correctly.

I read and configured everything I could find on mandrakeuser.org and
linuxprinting.org. I've not been able to find any KDE configuration
files that are applicable. Also, I've not ever been able to get KDE to
remember paper size defaults and don't know if this is related to the
printing problem. I'm printing on letter size paper which I have to
select every time I print because the KDE dialog defaults back to A4.

I'm out of ideas on what to try next. Can anyone help? TIA

Ok, here is my printcap section that I thought that I edited properly, but

I've tried the driver for the HP500-600 range, and also the one just before
that (I forget what it was now), from the list in PrintTool's printer setup.

According to http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi?make=Canon&format=full

The Cannon BJC-6000 is a "papaerweight"

Reported to work
on Usenet by Jan Harmsen; may well be "perfect" - if so please fix! May only
run at 720x720? Try the 610 Uniprint drivers, too. I ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
changed the functionality to paperweight after finding no success on Linux
2.3.39 with a known good parport setup (BJ-210SP works). With gs I tried the
bjc600 driver with no joy. echo yes >/dev/lp0 failed to respond and needed a
break to get the prompt back. lpr of ascii caused no action from printer, and
the job stayed in the queue indefinitely, with lpq claiming that the printer was
printing. When I put the 210SP back everything worked. During the tests I
compiled a kernel with plug+play turned on but no plug+play device was detected
at boot. I think she's a dud.Note: printer doesn't print plain

As I mentioned in my original post, this is also happening on a Canon
BJC6000. Isn't that one supposed to work also?

Thanks,

[newbie] Printing Problems in 6.5

2000-01-18 Thread Wendell E. Gragg

Ok.  As I mentioned in my rant yesterday, I have a
printing problem.  I run on a Compaq Presario 4862.   I installed
Mandrake 6.5 in a dual boot setup with Win98se.  Everything I have tested
seems to work with the exception of printing.

After installation, I went to Printtool and defined a
printer (HP Deskjet 722C before I found out it was was Win printer).  I
told the program to send out a test page both to the spooler and to the
port.  I received a message stating that the test page printed.
Printer response, nothing.

I tried it with a Canon BJC6000 which I found from the
printing Howto site is supposed to work.  Same response.  I don't get
any kind of activity from the printer at all.  I checked out some books and
followed the advice there.  I did a dmesg from a console window and found
that parport recognized both of my printer ports and even recognized the proper
printer attached to LPT1 (P0).

I checked the config files that I could find and the
proper entries for parport seem to be there.  I installed tunelp and tried
to assign irq7 to the parallel port.  Still nothing happens when I print,
not even a blinking printer light.

I removed my second port on the off chance that maybe it
was causing a conflict.  Same result.  I completely reinstalled from
scratch, thinking that maybe I had screwed up in the install.  Same
result.

Do any of you have any ideas?  I am about at my wits
end here.  If I was at least getting an error message, I might know where
to turn, but I am not even getting that!

Thanks in advance!

I saw a similar problem posted about trying to print
from Netscape. The solution seemed to be to make a symlink
from lp (the default Netscape print device) to lp0 (the
default KDE/Linux print device )

[newbie] Printing problems

1999-11-16 Thread Angelescu Basarab

I'm using linux Mandrake 6.0 with KDE.
I have a remote printer - HP LaserJet 5 - part of the
LAN.
Lpd works when I try printing with lpr but there are
problems when I try to print from Maxwell for example.
I think that there is some problem with filters but I
don't know how to configure the printer.

[newbie] Printing Problems, Please help!

1999-06-09 Thread Scott Sweeney

Please help me print

In printtools I set my printer type as BJ-240 (I have BJC-240). This should
work..but it doesn't. When I try printing a test page, all I get is
garbage...about 10 pages of it. The parr. port is set to bi-directional,
ghostscript is installed..I've read everything I can find, and can't seem to
find a solution. What's the one thing I need to do?

Thanks..
