It is smbclient -- I'm sure you can install it with urpmi, but I don't know for sure the name of the rpm -- it might even be packaged with the samba server. Thanks Mike Hi Mike, my experience has shown that if all you want to do is connect to the internet then you don't need samba. But, if you want the linux box to see shares on the windows boxes and share some files or partitions of it's own with the windows boxes, then yes you need samba. HTH Dennis M.

No, your network and Linux box will work just fine without it -- the Linux box can run a dhcp client and get the information it needs, or you can specify the IP, Gateway IP, DNS IP(s), etc. If you want to exchange files between the Linux and PC boxes, Samba may be one of the more convenient ways (assuming you can install it without too much difficulty). What I do is run smbclient (or smbmount) (Samba "clients" rather than servers) when I want to exchange some files with my Windows machine(s). They have proved easy to install (for me) compared to trying to get a Samba server working. The SambaClient and SambaMount pages listed on this page might be helpful: * http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Wikilearn/SambaMain Randy Kramer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > If I have a Windows domain and want to add a linux box, do I need to have > Samba installed on it. > > I have a small network at home and am going to add the Linux box I built to > it. > > Network config is > > Router > | > Hub > | > -- > | | | | | > Domain PC1 PC2 PC3Linux >Controller Box > > The Domain Controller is Providing DNS, DHCP.
