Just to keep the archives complete, solved by downloading complete DVD
and reinstalling. Fortunately I had learnt to make a separate /home
partition so fairly painless.

Anne,

Which version of OOo are you using?

If the file is not confidential, if you like to send it to me off list,
I can try opening it and saving as a document format (rather than
template) and see if that helps. I have OOo 1.1.4 and 1.9.104 available.

Some templates are saved under ~OOo/share/ and you may not (as user)

However it seems you have to reboot ypur PC (or X server).
These are the settings for my system:
- switch anti-aliasing on
- leave exclude range off

The only thing I remember having changed is in MMC change font size to 10 in

This may have changed the Xorg settings and as a side effect the mouse is

I keep getting an error and when I run the test to check it out.. it

Any ideas?

Since I blew out the proprietary info on the C drive.. and cracked it

Even the HP site isn’t specific.

I’m not sure if this is going straight to a forum or to someone.. so any
advice would be appreciated.

The HP docs here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=us&docname=bph06799&lc=en
tells you it's integrated graphics, so you need to check out the
chipset, wich is VIA KL133.
If you then check out the Via site here:
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=40&STypeID=3
you will see that it's the chipset also known as Apollo KL133
If you look here:
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=5&ArticleID=68&P=5
you will see that the integrated graphics is named:
"KPLE integrated graphics" and the Northbridge is VT8364...
Unfortunately here the fun seems to stop as I can't really find
any proof that the xorg will support your card with any specific driver,
but you should be able to use the standard VESA driver...

KDM configuration is in /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc

It is well commented.

Thanks for the suggestion Derek, but still the same behaviour.
Is there any way to edit an .rc file or something, or at least debug
what is happening?

I am not entirely a newbie, but have not learnt my way around debugging.
k3b --help doesn't seem to offer a verbose mode and no help from k3bsetup.

Okay - first up:
during the install, I selected the partitions that Mandrake preselected -
which is what I was advised to do, probably at linuxquestions or another
forum, or possibly on the installation process itself.

These were:
hda5 (5.8Gb, /, ext)
hda6 (368Mb, /mnt, ext3)
hda9 (11Gb, /home, ext 3)
If this was incorrect, then so be it - I was simply doing what I thought I had
been advised to do. There was also swap there somewhere.

I seriously wonder if all this questioning is worth it - your time, and my
limited knowledge. I simply want a system that works. If I have made a
mistake, okay, then fix it if can be fixed simply, or reinstall. It seems
the fix is not simple, and I believe it is time to reinstall.

I am sorry if this disappoints you ... and I am sorry if I have wasted your
time. I acknowledge that I probably stuffed up when I attempted to install
the mouse, however, there were always problems with stalling, even at the
first install attempt. I see on other forums that Mandrake is reputed to
have problems with USB devices. That may be disputed here - I don't know.

I do know that I need to have a system that works, and if i don't fully
understand why it didn't, then I can live with that. I hope you can see my
point. I read recently - on the local LUG mailing list I think - "that some
prefer to wrestle with linux, than actually use their system" I *don't* fall
into that category.

I really am deeply appreciative of your efforts to help, and of other listers
- but am beginning to wonder if it is going anywhere.

Rosemary
Rosemary,
While I would love to take this through to the end, in this case, you
are probably right about a re-install being the best fix. If I were
sitting in front of your box, I could probably get everything sorted out
in less time then it would take to install. But doing it over the list,
it will probably take at least a few days. I would enjoy the chalange,
but it is probably not in your best interest. If you had more Linux
experence, and wanted to learn system repair, that would be different.

Now, when you re-install, you will want to save your /home partition,
(hda9) and probably your extra data partition (hda6).

One thing I would do different - you will want hda6 to mount on /data or
/mnt/data. You do NOT want it on /mnt. If you want, you can just tell
the installer to leave it alone, and we can help you create a mount
point for it later.

OK Rosemary, I need to study this a little but for now see what I see.
You have a 40gig hard drive:
You have 7 ( note ~ seven ) partitions:
You have only 1 primary partition ~ you ought to have 3 but not
essential: more about this later.

Not realy. You can have up to 4, but if you use an extended partition,
it uses 1 primary partition "slot".

You have only 1 ( one ) logic partition ~ you are allowed up to 16 last
I heard:
>
Each partition in the extended partition is a logical partition. This
system has 5 logical partitions in the extended partition.
You therefore have 1 ( all you are allowed I believe ) extended
partition ~ it is within this partition that you have your logic
partitions:

You have 2 swap partitions ~ no idea why you have two when one is enough
especially when one of them appears huge.

About the only reasion for the second swap partition would be if using
Software Suspend. You need a swap partition a bit larger then your
physical memory to hold the currend system state when you suspend to
disk. But I don't think too many people are using it yet. But 1.1G does
look a bit large. On the other hand, the 82MB swap partition is realy
too small to be usefull...
Generally the rules here are:
No more than 4 primary partitions with only one of them being made an
extended partition in which you can have up to 16 logic partitions.

You can have as many swap partitions as you like though usually one is
enough.

Partition numbering is:
primary 1 ~ 4 ( includes the extended partition )
With LBA partitions numbering 5 ~ say 16
>
Logical partitions, not LBA. LBA is a way of accessing a hard drive, not
a partition type. (Logical Block Allocation if I remember right...)
The only partitions you have correct here are:
/dev/hda1 * [ Your WinXP partition and the * means it is bootable ]
/dev/hda1 [ One of your swap partitions and I say this is correct
because it appears to be of the correct size ~ Usually no more than 1.5
times your RAM size if it is under 512MB ]
>
I think you mean dha8 here, and not hda1.
Now lets take your df printf: [ printf is syntax for echo or in other
words ~ what you see returned to the screen when you issue a command
seeking info. ]

FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda5 5.8G 1.7G 3.9G 30% /[ My rough math for
the above table isn't to far off here afterall.]

/dev/hda9 12G 170M 12G 2% /home [ You must work out
what you really will be using here because this is far to big at
present ~ only 170MB of 12000MB used so far.]

SO.
Your WinXP partition does not get mounted when you boot up ~ you may
prefer this but fstab has it entered.

Your hda6 partition doesn't get mounted so we need to discover which
directory this relates to. [ See below ]

This partition was being mounted on /mnt before we disabled it.

Your hda8, in my opinion is just wasted space at present.
Please try this:
Go K>>Configure Your Desktop>>Partitions and tell me what you see
there. If there is more there than /dev/hda5 and /dev/hda9, ( should at
least be /dev/hda7 and /dev/hda8 ),
then please make a note of what partitions are there AND what there
sizes are, ( Usually in megabytes ~ [ MB ] ), as this will save having
to work out partition sizes using the
number of blocks reported by the fdisk command. { Went back and did
that anyway but am still curious ]
Another thing to do is to mount that /dev/hda6 partition to find out
what it is. So do as su:
# mkdir /mnt/hda6
# mount /dev/hda6 /mnt/hda6 [ If this gives you errors then stop here
and let me know what those errors are. ]
# cd /mnt/hda6
# ls
Look at any directories listed here ( other than lost & found ) and tell
me what they are please.
Not trying to crowd you so will stop here and await your replies.

Okay - first up:

OK Rosemary, I need to study this a little but for now see what I see.
You have a 40gig hard drive:
You have 7 ( note ~ seven ) partitions:
You have only 1 primary partition ~ you ought to have 3 but not
essential: more about this later.

You have only 1 ( one ) logic partition ~ you are allowed up to 16 last
I heard:

You therefore have 1 ( all you are allowed I believe ) extended
partition ~ it is within this partition that you have your logic partitions:

You have 2 swap partitions ~ no idea why you have two when one is enough
especially when one of them appears huge.

( Don't mind me rambling on here ~ I'm working out loud.)
Generally the rules here are:
No more than 4 primary partitions with only one of them being made an
extended partition in which you can have up to 16 logic ( LBA ) partitions.

You can have as many swap partitions as you like though usually one is
enough.

Partition numbering is:
primary 1 ~ 4 ( includes the extended partition )
With LBA partitions numbering 5 ~ say 16
The only partitions you have correct here are:
/dev/hda1 * [ Your WinXP partition and the * means it is bootable ]
/dev/hda1 [ One of your swap partitions and I say this is correct because
it appears to be of the correct size ~ Usually no more than 1.5 times your RAM
size if it is under 512MB ]
Now lets take your df printf: [ printf is syntax for echo or in other words ~
what you see returned to the screen when you issue a command seeking info. ]
FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda5 5.8G 1.7G 3.9G 30% /[ My rough math for the
above table isn't to far off here afterall.]
/dev/hda9 12G 170M 12G 2% /home [ You must work out what you
really will be using here because this is far to big at present ~ only 170MB
of 12000MB used so far.]
SO.

Your WinXP partition does not get mounted when you boot up ~ you may prefer
this but fstab has it entered.
Your hda6 partition doesn't get mounted so we need to discover which directory
this relates to. [ See below ]

Oh, probably. You would know better than I. I copied these bits of code from the
Deadman.org site IIRC. Personally, I like my MP3 files to be renamed anyhow, for
future CLI functions. Filenames with spaces are a pain in the arse.

I use kdebluetoothd for everything that my phone does. I have made
connections with the stock Nokia software under Win using my work computer
but the Symbian OS can be used with Linux, just not quite as elegantly. So,
contacts can be sent and received from the phone using standard .vcf format.
>From KDE Contacts, save one of your contacts in vcf format and you can then
send that to the phone and from there, you can save it as a contact in the
phone. You can also send from the phone to your computer, again as .vcf and
then import it into KDE. For pictures, you simply send the picture to your
phone or from your phone and it comes down or goes up as an image. Same
for .mid files for ringtones, etc. kdebluetooth comes with a file transfer
agent using bluetooth that is very adequate.

None of this is material to you since you don't have bluetooth. IR works as
well on my phone but I haven't done any IR under Linux since my desktop
machines don't have IR connectors. I haven't ever used a data cable so I
don't have any info about that, when I went shopping for a phone, I was
specifically after bluetooth for obvious reasons. However, according to my
reading, your model has very limited PDA functions, so possibly you won't
need to go as far down that path.

Try here:
http://devidal.tv/~chris/nokia_6800/

And, there is a Linux/Win tool called gnokii that is specifically for
connectivity of phones and Nokia 6800 is supposed to be supported.

Indeed, my model does not have bluetooth. I would be using the data

I have a Nokia 6600. It has IR and Bluetooth. I have used bluetooth quite a
lot and the connection to Linux is fine. I can send files, receive files,
contacts, etc.

However, IIRC, your model does not support bluetooth so the only connection

I can probably get the data cable I need through work, and only pay a
couple to a few dollars more than the cost of the cable you linked +
shipping. Maybe even about the same taking my employee discount into
consideration. Though, if I hadn't caught the subtext of the coupon
Nokia gave me when I registered my phone, I might have bought it from
them. They charge $49.95, and I have a coupon for $10 off, but it
requires me to spend $50 or more, and that usually doesn't round up
five cents. *shrugs* I'll look into the one at work though, thanks.

If anyone else is reading this, and has any experience with Nokias
directly, I'd appriciate it if you'd comment and let me know. Thanks!

Amy

I can't speak to Nokia from experience, but I've gotten Samsung and
Sanyo phones connected to Mandrake with bitpim
(http://bitpim.sourceforge.net/). The bitpim site only indicates one
Nokia phone model known to work, but states others may work, though they
are untested. You'll need a USB cable made for your phone, and it looks
like you can get one here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5755884150&category=20366

I bought my cable on eBay, and it worked like a charm. The eBay
knock-offs are about $50 less than the cable the phone vendors sell.

Good luck!

Anne,

Thanks. RIght now the Windows box is headless. It's just there so I
can access my old pictures and files. From time to time my wife wants
to get on it to use Photo Impact. At some point I may get a monitor
for it and give it to my son (8 yrs old). At that point, I'll also
get another hardrive for this computer and back everything up there.
I will probably keep Windows on that one as that is what he is
learning on in school. Its only a 500MHz so everything is slow. It
should be ok for what he'd need though. It has Open Office and can
connect to the internet. I don't see any need for it to see the Linux
box. Who knows that the future may hold.

Unlike windows, you probably didn't need to. However, there are times when,
as a newbie, it's frankly the easiest option. I did it a couple of times

This means that the windows box is acting as the server and you are the
client. That's fine until you want the Mandrake box to allow the windows box
to see something. Leave it for now - but don't wait until it's too urgent -
and we'll help you get a basic samba set up when you need it.

It's better to post as text than an attachment. Not sure about
sympa, but some listservers don't even allow attachments.

Hi Rosemary, I hear your frustration. The curve is pretty steep at
first.

A couple of points about CLI : Don't forget the Tab completion in the
shell. If you start typing a link or a command, then hit Tab, it will
show you the possible completions, and as you work along will fill
everything in, correctly, because it only allows correct syntax. Not
a cure-all, but stops a lot of typos.

The other feature of the konsole shell that I find can avoid typos is
to highlight something you know you want to type, for instance a file
found by "locate" then do Edit (from the menu in the top border) - Copy
If you then do shift-insert it will paste the copied data into your
shell. Can also work eg from browser links. I use it setting up my

Actually, as long as you have the "gpm" package installed, you can
select (ie; highlight) text from virtually anywhere, move your mouse
into your shell, and either click (do not rotate, but depress) the
wheel on your mouse or simultaneously click both left and right
buttons at the same time. Whatever you had previously selected will
now show up in your shell.

And a working example of that to get you using it because it is just
great and easy: Open your konsole and :-

$ slocate
As stated above : place the I bar cursor at the end of the last
directory that contains the file name you want to go to : left click
depress and hold : move the I bar to highlight the whole file name [ all
the way to the left of the page ] : release left click.

Now without doing or moving anything :
Type " cd " and hit the space bar once : click the middle mouse button :
and hit the enter key :

Because you are inside a CLI your typing will default to the current
command prompt automatically and your pasting will also default to the
same command prompt line. No typo's:

Now this example is only a exercise and I leave it to you to find the
many uses it has when you are within the CLI.

Enjoy, man, isn't Linux fun at times.

Hi Rosemary, I hear your frustration. The curve is pretty steep at first.
A couple of points about CLI : Don't forget the Tab completion in the
shell. If you start typing a link or a command, then hit Tab, it will
show you the possible completions, and as you work along will fill
everything in, correctly, because it only allows correct syntax. Not a
cure-all, but stops a lot of typos.

The other feature of the konsole shell that I find can avoid typos is to
highlight something you know you want to type, for instance a file found
by "locate" then do Edit (from the menu in the top border) - Copy
If you then do shift-insert it will paste the copied data into your
shell. Can also work eg from browser links. I use it setting up my urpmi
sources from http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/. Saves a lot of potential errors.

The protocol in the machine where

Yes, I've had the same experience. I have a a USB wireless

manually using it. I doubt it's a driver problem, though.
To end, the adapter SMC2662W is an USB adapter, and
I am using Mandrake 10.1.
Ah. I hid a similar problem. I installed a wireless USB NIC on a
machine, then had to reinstall 10.1 after a nasty power outage.
After the re-install, I had a very tough time getting it to
configure.
What I ended up doing was using Mandrake Control Center to set it
up as a LAN connection (not WLAN!). It spotted the USB NIC fine.
Then to get it working on my network, I used a small app called
wlanfe which allows you to configure the wireless connection.
That got it completely working. Then, once it was working, active
connection, I went back to mcc, added a real wlan connection, and
mcc found it just fine. I can't remember if I set up the wireless
stuff at that point or had to go to manage connections after
that. But that was the basic procedure: add it as a lan
connection, get the connection actually working with wlanfe, then
re-add the connection as a wlan connection, and optionally
configure it with Manage Connections if need be.
Thanks a lot for your feedback, Miark. I got me the Wlanfe little program
and I proceeded to follow your example, but I simply do not have an idea of
how to configure the wireless nick as a lan nic. When I am in the MCC I get,
for lan, the choice of configuring my Ethernet card and configure manually.
I have tried to avoid configuring the Ethernet card because it is completely
identified as an Ethernet card and I do not see the way to end with a Wlan
device instead. Well, then I go to "manual" configuration and it is the same
story as for trying for the wireless nic instead. No driver works at all and
the Wlanfe simply remains idle. Is there any way you can help me by
describing with more detail what you did? Your help will be greatly
appreciated.

Thing is, while several attempts to install from the same powerpack set

RE: [newbie] Re: Error in autoinstall "Oops, no root partition"

2005-02-15 Thread Bambang A. B. Sarif
Thank you for your reply.

I have 80G harddrive and 1G memory. I need to install two operating
systems (two linux distros) in the workstation. So, 60G will be
allocated
for mandrake while the rest for the the other.

I tried to remove the partitions part and put the following:
   'partitioning' => {
   'auto_allocate' => 1,
   'clearall' => 1,
   'eraseBadPartitions' => 0
 },

But this configuration gave me the same error.

Btw, I used the partition information from auto install disk I created
when I finished installing mandrake manually without any problem.

Bambang

Looking at your auto_inst.cfg, do you have enough room for the
partitions its trying to create? According to your file, its trying to
make: 43G / 2G swap 2G /tmp 2G /var 10G /export/tools total around 60
GB. Depending on your memory in the computer and what you have planned,
that's probably not a good partition scheme anyway. Anyway, I would
start there...looking at the size of the harddrive and what partitions
are trying to be created.

If you use Firefox, I use an extension called downTHEMall! which
works kinda like FlashGet in Winblows. It'll give you a list of
downloadable items, and you can check them one-by-one, or specify
by extension or type (such as "images"). Quite handy. I used it
today for the very same purpose.

The following works:

wget -r --no-parent --accept *.rpm http://www.gkmweb.com/amarok/10.1/

As far as I remember one can add the option :
--restrict-file-names or some such (I don't have access to the
manpages right now), but it should be doable. Try man wget if

Is there a way of selecting the files to download by its extension,

In pine, whilst view the message, use ">" to view a list of all attachments.
Select and "D"elete the one(s) you wish. _Then_ , backout to the message
body view and "S"ave the sucker into the same folder (or, some other - as
you wish). You'll be warned that the saved message will not contain the
attachment(s). "Y"es, you understand. Bingo! The message is saved anew,
and the old message -- the one you're viewing -- the one with the unwanted
attachment(s) -- is marked for "D"eletion.

Takes *WAY LONGER* in the telling than in the doing!

GNU Wget is capable of traversing parts of the Web (or a single

When retrieving an FTP URL recursively, Wget will retrieve all
the data from the given directory tree (including the subdirectories

 image locally.

 So, either

Correct. Denmark joined in 1973 after a very marginal "yes"
referendum. And we still keep our distance from much of the EU
rigmarole like military, police, monetary and environmental
matters. I don't know how Sweden fares, but last I looked they
still have their own currency. The brightest of the Nordic states
however is Norway and Iceland, who are still free countries.

Luckily, the EU is about to self-destruct.

Re: [newbie] re sagem

2005-02-02 Thread mx-7
Hi Dave,

I have successfully managed to get connected. I have found that the
connection wizard corrupts the config file, however you should do the
connection wizard absolutely. Then afterwards, you just need to go to
your Konsole and log as root with following procedures:

1. Type eagleusb config
2. Select your Country with related encapsulation.
3. Enter your login & password
4. Type eagleusb -ctrl to initialised the USB Modem, or you could skip
it and type: startadsl

No matter what it connects and does not even desynchronised. I didnot
even install a newever version of the driver. For those who got their
modem desynch, you have wrongly input the encapsulation for your ISP,
that's all.

Regards,
Christan.

An "echo $TERM" replied "dumb" so I thought it did define one,

Okay, false alarm. During my test, I opened powershell _from_

So I'm back to square one.

Well, that is easy to fix. Change it to:
if [ $TERM = "dumb" ] ; then export TERM=xterm ; fi
One thing to keep in mind - if Powerterm is setting TERM to dumb, then
it probably does not support some of the terminal functions of xterm. So
some programs may not work correctly. There really is a terminal
definition called "dumb", with its own description of terminal
capabilities.

On looking at this, I realized that I didn't explain what the first and
second versions do. I usually try to explain when I post on the newbie
list...

On the first version, the "[ ! $TERM ]" test checks to see if the
variable $TERM has a value. the ! before $TERM basicly inverts the test,
so you execute the commands if $TERM in not set. So if $TERM=xterm,
$TERM=dumb, , or $TERM is set to anything else, you do not change it.

On the new version, "[ $TERM="dumb" ]" says check if $TERM is set to
dumb, and if it is, change it to xterm.

The export TERM=xterm does two things in one command. It sets $TERM to
xterm, and exports it so that the value stays set after .bashrc is run.
If you do not export the value, then it is lost as soon as the script exits.

One other point - this will only work if you are using bash as your
shell. This is the default on MDK, but you can change it. If you do,
then .bashrc is no longer run when you open a terminal window...

_THAT_ did it!! Hurray!

At this point I only really care about less, clear, and
MicroEMACS, and they all seem to work fine so far, so I'm
happy as a proverbial pig.

Thanks much!

If TERM isn't defined, you may be able to add something to
.bashrc - something like (untested)
if [ ! $TERM ] ; then export TERM=xterm ; fi
An "echo $TERM" replied "dumb" so I thought it did define one,
but I tried your trick in .bashrc and voila! It works!!

Okay, false alarm. During my test, I opened powershell _from_
konsole, so it worked because konsole exported TERM. When I
opened powershell from the XFCE launch bar directly, it failed.
So I'm back to square one.
