Re: [newbie] reiserFS and RH

2001-08-19 Thread Erylon Hines

I can tell you that on their latest 7.1 install disks it is NOT offered as an
option. For the record, I've been using it on some of my systems for over 6
months, and the only problem I've had is, in the event of a crash, if I'm
using the NT bootloader on a dual boot system, I have to use the linux boot
disk and re-copy the lilo boot record to the NT linux.bat file. If I'm
using lilo as the bootloader this is not an issue. I thrash my systems, and
Reiser definitely is beyond experimental--in spite of what RH thinks.

[newbie] reiserfs

2001-07-20 Thread Colin Jenkins

Hi,
is there any no-destructive way of converting to reiserfs ?
When I reinstalled yesterday, I decided to try it out, but messed up a
little.
(I formatted one drive as ext2 nand the other as reiserfs)

Re: [newbie]:reiserfs+e2fs mixed system

2001-07-13 Thread Terry A. Bowling

I'm thinking that they've got the Reiser FS working just fine. I installed
Mandrake8.0 on my laptop as a single partition / and it's RFS - I've let my
batter die and I've forced an improper reboot and it's never failed me.

I also installed my home desktop with 5 partitions: /boot, /, /var, /tmp, and
/home - all Reiser and it's never failed me even though I abuse it as well.

As far as incompatibilities, if Linux supports the format then it will work. It
doesn't matter if you are mixing formats - linux will load the proper driver for
the proper file system. Windows cannot natively read Reiser, ext2, or even nfs
for that matter.

No, it's windows that can't read reiserfs partitions (or ext2 for that
matter). But reiserfs doesn't have to read windows partitions - there is a
fat32 driver to do that. IIUTC, anyway.

FWIW:

I set mine up the other way round, with /home on reiserfs since that is where
a lot of writing and deleting takes place, /tmp on a separate little ext2
partition and everyting else in / on ext2 as well. I'm not sure if this has
been fixed yet, but a while back the word on the street was that at least
/boot should NOT be reiserfs.

I backup my data from both ext and reiserfs quite easily to a FAT32 partition
on another disk, so I think perhaps your fears are unfounded.

[newbie]:reiserfs+e2fs mixed system

2001-07-13 Thread Alan Smith

Hi All
My mdk8.0 system is set up using the e2fs file system mainly because i thougth I read
somewhere that reiserfs could not read the windows
partition/disk. I do have occasional power failures however and the reiserfs sys would
be more stable for me to use.

If the reisefs file sys can read the windows partition is it possible to set up my sys
using the reiserfs file system but keeping /home as e2fs as I do not
have adequate means of saving the /home partition and copying it's contents to a new
reiserfs /home partition.

Thanks

8.0 doesn't sound like very much fun. i think i'm going to stay with 7.2
for a while.

so you're saying that you installed the 2.2.19-kernel-src rpm and then

s,

it would appear from the information you supplied that you didn't compile
the kernel but rather installed the RPM package version. if that is
correct then you did what I did last week and now you've got a mess.

if you're running Mandrake 8.0 I'm not sure what to tell you since I'm
still running 7.2 and I have a feeling there are some differences between
the two that might make things interesting.

something you may want to try is downloading the kernel tarball and
compiling it that way. when you're configuring the kernel before compile
under the "file system" menu item make sure that you check the module or
direct support for reiserfs.

Why not check /etc/fstab? Each partitions file system will be identified.

When I boot up Linux, on a dual boot Win98 and Mandrake box, I sometimes
stare at the messages coming up from all the processes initializing. Well
one I do see each time is a line that mentions something about SUSE,
starting ReiserFS, and something about MP3.com. I'm so very newbie, but
maybe someone can correct me. But it would appear this line should be seen
by yourself as well when starting Mandrake, if I'm even _guessing_
correctly.

Hi,

2001-02-27 Thread abe

ok well thats good news. That means I probably did somehting wrong.
Cool. Its fixable!

I've had my geforce card for a few months now and had it working great.
In fact with the 0.9.5 nvidia drivers I get better performance then in
windows by about 25%!! I re-installed to change to reiser and I must
have botched something during ort after the re-install cause what worked
before doesn't now.

Hey, if you are using the 0.9.6 nvidia driver you should try installing
from tar.gz because there is a little change you can make in one of the
build files that will result in much better performance. Without the
change that driver seems locked around 90fps but with the change it
approaches the performance of 0.9.5 and is a lot more stable.

read M64_USERS_README in NVIDIA_GLX-0.9-6 for the fix.

Thank you Adam.

did that. the only error that I saw that might be causing this is an
informational about agp being disabled and this one:

"(WW) NVIDIA(0): Failure reading EDID parameters for head 0."

I'm, gonna try the xfree86 people with this one.

is it supposed to? how can the drives be checked for errors?

Do I need to get it? and if so from where..?

These are hdparm (a utility to optimise hard drive speed) settings. It can
make a huge difference in performance, but since you don't get to test it
first it's better not to select it if you're not sure it'll work. Have a look
at http://mandrakeuser.org/hardware/hide2.html for details.

the hard drive optimizations are loaded as an append to the kernel. I
have never had it work correctly, and have had it leave me with an
unbootable system.

ReiserFS can be chosen when you partition the drive.

I did the recommended install. When you get the portion of the install
that asks you if you want to keep the existing disk partitions or change
them, select change. When you are in Hardrake, your can delete the
existing
partition and then you will have the option of recreating it as
ReiserFS.
I was able to change all mine.

I have a Compaq Presario 5726 (unfortunately), and ReiserFS have proved to be the ONLY
partitioning system that is stable enough, and with enough errorcorrection - systems
to make my machine reliable.

The problem is that i somehow loses information about where the harddisk locate some
of its files, I acually lose directories and parts of files in both DOS - partitions
and standard Linux - partitions.

ReiserFS have strong enough errorcorrection to cope with the problem!

I am deeply impressed, recommend it to everybody concerned about loss of data.

Hi Dr Caracciolo! The Reiser Filesystem handles improper system shutdowns
far better than does the (current) standard Ext2 filesystem. The improper
shutdowns, which of course can be caused by a myrid of things like power
outages or inexperienced Linux users' response to a crashed program or
frozen desktop. The way I basically understand it, the Reiser Filesystem
will usually pop right back up in situations that would cause a prolonged
FSCH and often filesystem damage under Ext2. It's a journalized filesystem,
as is the BeOS's filesystem. I've tested the BeOS's ability to recover from
all kinds of improper shutdowns - I basically got really abusive with it
just to see how much it could really take; I never managed to knock it down!
I'm in hopeful anticipation of the same type of stability with the ReiserFS.

For anyone who would like to have the ReiserFS in 7.1, and at the sametime
do the much easier automatic install, here's what worked for me: First
select expert install, and when you get to where you setup your partitions,
select ReiserFS as the filesystem type. After it formats the partitions, go
back to the 'installation class' selection in the left hand menu and select
automatic install. It'll skip the partition setup since it was already done
(or you can just leave it as is and tell it to NOT format anything!) From
there on it's an easy install, and you'll have the ReiserFS to boot!
