Most SmartMedia readers work fine, but CompactFlash can be problematic, and I'm only aware of one combo reader (CF/SM) that works under Linux (but I can't recall the brand). I don't know if you can get PNY products in the UK, but my PNY Smartreader works just fine under Mandrake 8.2 and 9.0). It is small, plain black and ugly and cost $29 (US) from Staples Office Supply. I don't know if they are in the UK, but they have a web site (www.staples.com) and I'm sure others carry the PNY brand. I'd give you the model number, but I'm not at that computer right now. If you're interested, let me know. My best recommendation, though, would to buy locally from a vendor who allows returns. Joeb Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Smartmedia Reader
In a word yes. I have a Zio USB SM reader which is RW in Windows but read only in Linux - (Pauses to plug it in, insert SM card and check that it is readable) For my convenience I created a mount point /mnt/Zio which uses /dev/sda1 as it's device, then I just go to Removable media, click on Zio and it opens /mnt/memory_card which I didn't create - it was done by the system and does not appear as Removable media. I then navigate through to mnt/memory_card/dcim/100olymp which is the naming convention used by my camera in this case and open the image, which I can then save onto the HD. I can, and have copied files over to a windows directory and saved them to SM that way. If it helps my fstab and mtab are posted below - BTW supermount works for me. I have just realised that fstab is attempting to mount /dev/sda as /mnt/LS120 - but Konqueror is showing it with a padlock, like a fd or cdrom with no disk in - which again suggests to me that it is seeing the CF card. Anyway, if I unplug the cardreader - I would not normally have it plugged in - my LS120 will be on the wrong drivename. And when I reboot it will return to its own sda. How is the name derived? Is the position on the usb hub relevant? Anne Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
