Re: [newbie] Software Manager -- How to update?

2001-05-09 Thread D. Hoyem

Benjamin,
I'm sure that you realize that Mandrake has not made
available the documentation on the web for version 8.0
yet. I'm also sure that you realize the Mandrake is a
business and that requires money to run which is the
diference between them and for example Debian, that is
build and maintained by users, saying this I believe
that the instructions for the software manager will be
in the documentation that is included in the Mandrake
Disk Set that will be on the shelves soon.
Also why don't you make a How-to for this, Linux
only gets better if we the users make it that way.

Re: [newbie] Software Manager -- How to update?

2001-05-09 Thread Sam

Hi,
launch the "Software Manager". Click on "Define sources". and "New". For
"Type of source", click on "Security updates" and click the "Update list of
mirrors" button. Select a mirror and wait a while for it to be added to the
list of sources. Once it is, under the "Installable" tab, toggle the "All"
to "Updates only". And click on "Flat list" to better see the list of
available updates.

Hope this helps.

[newbie] Software Manager -- How to update?

2001-05-09 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Charles and friends:

Thanks a million, Charles!!! You've done a good deed in giving us the
instructions for using the new LM 8.0 Sofware Manager (icon on desktop).

I've been using Linux for three years now and have lots of experience
running Linux, beginning with Red Hat 5.2 and then running Mandrake from
version 6.1 on, including MandrakeUpdate in every version including LM
7.2. This new Sofware Manager is first-rate, no question about it. I
just used Charles' instructions and they work beautifully. Congrats to
Mandrake for a superior new Software Manager (MandrakeUpdate).

It's too bad Mandrake did not see fit to include simple instructions for
the user. There is no Help file. You are on your own. My thanks again to
Charles for the instructions. What a shame that Mandrake couldn't see
the obvious need to add Instructions on how to use the Software Manager.
What does it take, folks? Is this any way to win over Windows users?

When you open the Software Mgr select Define sources, then select New,
from the top dropdown menu select Security Updates, and click the Update
list of mirrors bar.
Choose a mirror site and click OK.
Allow the source to download and complete.
Click OK or Done, I do not remember which was used.

In the Software Mgr dropdown menu select updates only.
Software Mgr will now load from CD1, CD2 And the FTP site you added
and you will be given a list of updated pkgs.

[newbie] Software Manager -- How to update?

2001-05-08 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I've tried the new Software Manager in LM 8.0 with the intention of
updating (the old MandrakeUpdate). My apologies if I am just blind, but
repeated attempts at updating have failed. I do not see any FTP
addresses or any instructions on how to perform the update. Could
someone please provide simple step-by-step instructions on how to update
LM 8.0 from the Internet?

I wouldn't be surprise if others are having the same problem. I am sure
we would all appreciate this help.

Thank you so much.
