And, just to add to Dennis' suggestion, if the file is foo.tar.bz2, use tar xvfj. However I'm told on older versions you need to use tar xvfI. [newbie] TAR problems
I've been having some problems running tar. I type something like "tar -x foo.tar" and it just hangs there for a long time.
