ahathere ARE parallel port modems...they are ancient already and many have not
seen them before.
My apologies for not reading the post properly... it was stated clearly that it was a
USB modem.
Well, i learnt my lesson with a USB modem a few years back...it's not gonna work
unless u run it on windoz.
Or, at best, it's gonna be an on-off case...bad connectivity, etc, etc.
i Agree fully, a serial port modem is the best...coz it's a hardware modem, totally
independent of the OS.

No, it's a USB modem -- way too many of which are winmodems. I've never heard
of a parallel port modem; you probably mean a serial port modem. They don't
require drivers; they just work.

Sheesh, my best box is only an 850.

More Ram would help--a lot.

| Hey; don't feel bad! I'm using a home-built 233MHz comp with 96MB of RAM
| and all that good stuff. :-P

One of my boxen is a P200--lots of Ram, though. It's just o.k. with kde, but
excellent with Xfce.

I booted a P233 laptop with only 64 megs of Ram with a Damn Small Linux
disk--it was great with the Fluxbox provided.

| Your modem is probably a "winmodem" which basically means it's a modem
| made to work with Windows. Somebody out there may have come up with
| drivers to make it a "linmodem" (Work with Linux), but even if there is
| winmodems are buggy as a rule. (I should know, I've got one) Your best
| bet is to get a new modem that's not a winmodem, and the majority of
| external modems fit the bit.

Actually, I've found the Winmodems with Lucent chipsets to be excellent and I
won't hesitate to install one--but there aren't any drivers (at least
officially, last time I checked) for the 2.6 kernel. PCTel and Conexant are
a real PITA. Beware of USB modems--many are Winmodems. Serial modems always
work, straight away--no messing around. Someone posted a link a couple of
months ago for a serial for $18, US--if you are somewhere in North America.
That's about the same price as a Winmodem.

is this the modem where you gotta connect with a parallel port?
I thought they never needed any drivers?

One of the greatest tools we have at our disposal is GOOGLE, the other
is man(ual pages); open your browser, go to Google, type in wvdial.

Sean:
It's probably a winmodem. There's lots of information here:
http://www.linmodems.org/

It seems to me that this model number has come up in previous postings, so you
might want to search the mandrake archives -- both expert and newbie.

Try urpmi wvdial. It is a program that will set up your modem vi
wvdiall.conf for use. After installing look at man wvdial.
