Thanks Paul
I have downloaded the driver. It compiled cleanly and everything looks
great. As soon as some other downloads are completed I shall unplug my
Xircom PCMCIA modem and try the Microport. The URL you provided was spot on.

cheers

[newbie] usb modems

2004-12-10 Thread Duncan Anderson
Greetings
I have been trying to attach a usb modem to a Thinkpad T22. The modem is
a Microcom USB 56K Travel/S. I have looked in the Twiki and found
nothing. "usbview" shows an "unknown device".

I am very familiar with serial modems, but as far as these new-fangled
usb beasties are concerned, I am a complete newbie.

I am running 10.1CE. MCC(drakconf) does not seem to work, and using the
kppp configuration does not work either. I see various USB related tty
devices listed, but when I "query modem", nothing is picked up.

Does anyone have any experience of these things? Am I wasting my time?
cheers
Duncan

Hello,

I made the mistake of purchasing a USB modem to use with my LM8.0
installation - "it's an external modem, isn't it?".
Well, yes and no! I won't go into the details of what I eventually worked
out from reading forums and newsgroups, but basically some USB modems work,
and some don't.
So: buy a good old-fashioned serial port external modem. It will work
straight out of the box without any messing about with drivers.
I settled on a Elsa Microlink Fun, simply because a) it was cheap b) I liked
the colour c) I couldn't find any negative reviews with Google.

Have fun,

Richard

Andre:

I'm not sure how the economics work out, but what about an old fashioned
serial port external modem? NO drivers, NO web searches, NO downloads, NO
hassle -- just a simple serial cable, and that's all that there is. Yes, you
do have to find a plug for the power wart and a place to set the box, but
those are simple problems. In return, you get lights -- sometimes
useful for problem solving, and always entertaining during long
downloads. And it's very simple to move it from one box to another. Main
point, though: It simply works. Efficiently and quietly. And, if you use a
good protection device (lightning will kill modems almost instantly), it will
last for a long time.

A confession: A family emergency arose last month that required providing my
wife with a PC with dialup access -- NOW!! The PC was no problem, as I just
happened to have an old box with Mandrake 8.0 installed. However, it didn't
have a modem. So I went to the local Staples, and the only thing that I found
that I was certain would work was a real honest-to-God genuine authentic bona
fide serial modem. Bought it, brought it home, plugged it in, Mandrake
recognized it, and it worked just as advertised. The problem was solved, and
I continue to eat well. IMHO, this beats the hell out of mucking about with
web searches, drivers, patches, config files and all of that other stuff.

Summary: If it's in your budget, get a real modem. External is better than
internal.

Good luck,
Carroll

I would probably go with the external.if you don't want to
use up your isa slots.. I haven't tried usb's.but almost
any External modem will work since they are hardware based. I use US
Robotics Sportster .. both the internal ISA and the External.
Plus the External USR is probably cheaper than a new usb.

Just my 2cents :)

[newbie] USB Modems

2002-01-11 Thread Andre Dubuc

I'm considering an USB hardware modem [AOpen FM56-RU] to replace my AOpen
FM56-ITU/2 hardware ISA modem. I'd like to free up the ISA slot for an old
scanner.

I've checked LM Hardware database using my ISA modem and it declares my
present moidm unsupported! Do any usb modems function with LM8 or 8.1?
If not, could you recommend a good external modem?

Andre
