Re: [newbie] Uninstall KDE
You need some KDE libraries in order to be able to run some applications writtten for KDE. Check the box in "Remove Software" and see what messages come up - it will give you a list of programs which will also be reomved because of dependencies. Do give it a try - I am sure you will see something that you would miss. I tried it once, and ended up having to reinstall everything when I realised how cool KDE is! Even if there is nothing there now, you may find that there is an app that you want to install, and that relies on a KDE app, which will (may) entail you reinstalling everything again. I know it increases the complexity of the system, but if you can spare the 30-100meg I would leave it. If you really want keep all the info on the HD only to yourself i.e. the info is very confidential: Compress all the files on the HD first and encrypt that, then reformat the drive. Thanks Philip There are any number of ways, With the old HD still in place, 1) Shove an old windblows boot disk in the A drive and run to an A: prompt and use fdisck to remove all the old partitions and format the whole drive. 2) Use Partition Magic . With the HD inserted in IDE as slave on new computer, 3) If you have a spare IDE connection on your new machine, plug the old HD in as slave, let the computer's bios detect it , run the CD1 istallation disc to the partition/formating programme and remove everything. 4) If you already have something like W2K /XP , or Mandrake on your new machine, put up a consol and remove and reformat everything as administrator with the second HD plugged in the IDE line as slave. Sounds a mystery. Really? You've never seen a new system at the point at which the processor is mounted, the motherboard is connected to the power supply, CD-ROM and/or floppy or "flash" drive is connected but no hard drive at all and the point of the exercise is to load the BIOS onto a blank new CMOS? Not much experience with freshly assembled systems? You say you've never heard of any application that runs when the hard drive contains no data at all, but just because you haven't doesn't mean it isn't a fact. It just means you've never seen such. I've not seen everything there is to see regarding personal computers either, but I've never said something doesn't exist because of my lack of knowledge. > I have not heard of another operating system that does this either. I can name a few; Knoppix or PCLinuxOS for starters. You don't even need a hard drive, they'll run from the CD and memory. BTW on a newly assembled system destined to be a Windows machine the first thing that happens is exactly what I was trying to tell you, the installer utilities mount an initial ram disk into memory, locate and identify all hardware available that the developers decided they could deal with at install, then you get to partition and format the hard drive(s). It's the exact same thing that you can do with CD-1 of a Mandrake Linux install, or really any operating system, except Mandrake is capable of setting many more types of file systems than the Windows installer can. Remember, loaded into memory. You don't need to touch the hard drives until you know what you want written to them, and in what form. > > I don't think you thought that question through or the answer would have > > been blatantly obvious. > > Pardon? Discussions would dry up if everything was obvious. Read the above Adam. It _is_ obvious that a hard drive doesn't require an operating system to be formatted and partitioned or you wouldn't be able to add a hard drive to an existing system when the original dies. It's also obvious that an operating system doesn't require a hard drive or there would never have been any of the original game consoles. Not everything is an X-Box; the Play Station had no hard drive, the Nintendo 64 had no hard drive but they most definitely had an operating system. > Not only that, but I think I read that the documentation was written > by a number of different people. This has exactly what to do with the issue? Or are you trying to say something else? So tell me; am I kicking a seriously abused equine here or are you actually trying to learn something? If you want that function it's an option in the default KDE CD player. Nobody said you couldn't or shouldn't play a music CD or anything else you want, just that you have to _decide_ what you want and learn how to do it. OK? With XP, W2K or NT, you can just use the disk manager to do this. Log in to W$ as an administrator, run the disk manager, delete the non-windoze partitions and recreate them as FAT32 or whatever. My memory of XP's menu structures is hazy as I run it as rarely as possible, but I think you'll find what you need under Control Panel | Administrative ... | Disk Manager. Something like that anyway. Use it to create an rpm based on the tarball, then you can uninstall the program with rpm if you want to. No need to mess around with 'make uninstall' anymore, which may or may not work. I highly recommend this program! Narfi. ps. The project's home page is http://asic-linux.com.mx/~izto/checkinstall/ From the checkinstall page: A lot of people has asked me how can they remove from their boxes a program they compiled and installed from source. Some times -very few- the program's author adds an uninstall rule to their Makefile, but that's not usually the case. This is my primary reason to write CheckInstall. After you ./configure; make your program, CheckInstall will run make install (or whatever you tell it to run) and keep track of every file modified by this installation, using the excelent installwatch utility written by Pancrazio 'Ezio' de Mauro ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). When make install is done, CheckInstall will create a Slackware, RPM or Debian compatible package and install it with Slackware's installpkg, "rpm -i" or Debian's "dpkg -i" as appropriate, so you can view it's contents with pkgtool ("rpm -ql" for RPM users or "dpkg -l" for Debian) or remove it with removepkg ("rpm -e"|"dpkg -r"). Aditionally, this script will leave you a copy of the installed package in the source directory so you can install it wherever you want, which is my second motivation: I don't have to compile the same software again and again every time I need to install it on another box :-). What needs to happen is boot using something similar to tom's root / boot disk (link should be off the "distribution page" of linux.org) or into your linux install, run linux fdisk as root, remove all ext2 partitions. Boot into windows, run 'fdisk /mbr' (note, this is windows fdisk), reboot using the floppy, and repartition the drive using windows fdiskm, setting up partitions for a FAT16 or FAT32 partition - if it is a large drive, choose FAT32 (FAT16 has a limit of 2 GB per partition), then format. Re: [newbie] Uninstall Linux ?
If you just need disk space, why not do some housekeeping first and use the Windows tools to clean out the recycle bin, temporary files, old Windows uninstall info, down-loaded files, etc.? Also remove old programs you aren't using any more. You will be shocked how much space can be recovered and you may be able to keep Linux. I keep my disk cleaned up and I just checked and I can recover 140MB from less than a week. Run Disk Cleanup in System Tools. Also in in your browser, reduce the time for hanging on to history. I use ten days and if I haven't returned to a site within 10 days, I probably never will. Of course if you really want to throw Linux away, follow the instructions Civileme sent. Actually, to remove the lilo, you should boot from ordinary DOS diskete, and type 'fdisk /mbr' - this will remove from MBR record of the LILO (clean it) . About the partitions - i think you should use the Linux's fdisk to remove the ext2 partitions, and then use the DOS fdisk to recreate the regular fat16/32. Place Nautilus into expert mode (click the black diamond) and then enter the preferences. There should be an option to disable Nautilus from managing the desktop. You can then use GMC to manage your desktop if you wish, or have no manager at all (and use another file manager). To properly uninstall GNU/Linux (any flavour), you should delete the GNU/Linux partitions (including swap partitions) and create new ones using Windos filesystems. If I'm reading this right you want to uninstall Mandrake 8.0 and you want your mbr back the way it was. If your going to install other Linux Distro's then all you need to do is what several people have told you and that will reset your mbr. As far as uninstalling Mandrake 8.0 you don't really need to do this if you are going to install another Distro. That distro should use the same partations that you have set already. I hope that this answer's your question. Not sure what you're saying Aldo, ie, "As I have to check other Linux Distributions". If you don't want LILO installed in MBR, you should just boot your W98 start floppy and run 'fdisk /mbr' from a DOS prompt. That puts your mbr back like it was without uninstalling LM. Then you can still use your Mandrake 8 boot floppy (you did make one, right?) to boot Mandrake Linux. There's also ways to use LILO to boot multiple distros, tho I haven't. Search MandrakeForum. I believe there's a good article there in the archives by Civileme for doing this. Also, LILO doesn't have to be installed in mbr, see 'man lilo'. -- Tom Brinkman Galveston Bay

Re: [newbie] Uninstall
Lucas, you can remove Linux from your computer right from within Linux. It's easy. I did it last weekend on a computer that is going to my young grandchildren. First, make sure you have a boot disk for Windows and test it before you do anything. Then load Linus and launch DiskDrake (you can do this from a console as root or super user). On the graphic that comes up, you click on the partitions you want to get rid of, then tell it to remove or delete them. (I'm going from memory.) It'll give you warnings and warn of dire consequences. Be absolutely sure that you're not deleting your Windows partition. Then let DiskDrake do its thing. Put your Windows boot disk in drive A and exit to reboot. After the computer boots from Drive A, at a DOS prompt run FDISK /MBR if you use LILO or GRUB. That will get rid of the Linux boot manager. Remove the floppy and reboot. You will have to FDISK and FORMAT your now-empty second drive. Note that I don't know how this works with Windows 2000. I *think* FDISK /MBR will work for anything, but I could be wrong and it might disable the boot manager for W2K/Win 98. So you should look into that before you do this. FDISK /MBR gets rid of LILO and GRUB, if that's what you use. If you use something else, you can continue using it. I assume you have boot disks that can get you into your operating systems in case anything goes wrong. FDISK will not delete a non-DOS partition. --Judy Miner

Lucas, I did not see any reply's to your question so i will. If you had a dual boot machine and used lilo the first thing you need to do is go to the Dos prompt and do fdisk /mbr that will elimate lilo on the boot sector and reset your machine to boot automatically to the windoz. Then do a format D: assuming this is the drive that Mandrake is on and that will reformat the Linux drive back to either FAT16 or FAT32 whichever you want. Hope that what you want to do. What's stored in the RPM database is the name 'freeciv-1.11.4-1mdk' which is the rpm. David E. Do a "man RPM" from a shell. Lots of options there including: --nodeps (will install despite dependency problems) --force (will install over top of existing) and don't forget: rpm -q (to see what version you currently have) rpm -e (to uninstall a current version) Read the man results carefully, it will help a lot! ;-) -- /\ Dark>
