It's a project aimed at duplicating Visual studio and the .NET framework. The recently released beta Winforms support, which isn't ready for production use yet, but is fun to tinker with. Winforms are expected to be up to par within the next few months, and once that's the case then Mono will be a viable substitute for VS .NET. All the same the IDE, MonoDevelop, has been slow in development, so if your a newbie looking for ULTRA-easy UI creation, you'd better stick with M$ form designer. But if you need to develop in a production environment, Mono is all you'll need :-). (VS still rocks though, weather or not there's a M$ scheme behind it) SigmaX Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I would also have a look at Transgaming http://www.transgaming.com/ which uses a version of wine called wineX that runs many games under linux. Although it's not free, I run it and it works great. In subscribing to Transgaming you also support wine development. The cure is simple: Don't use HTML for email, at least on Linux maillists. There are a lot of reasons for this -- HTML mails are much larger than plain text ones, HTML is a common means of transmitting worms and virii, and HTML looks like hell on text-based mail clients. Finally, because many list members do not even accept HTML-formatted mail, your message will not be seen by them, thus reducing your chances of getting help. Please change your settings. FWIW, one of the cool things about KMail, Konqueror and other KDE apps is that the size of the displayed text can be changed very easily by rotating the mouse wheel while depressing the shift key. -- cmg Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Wine 20040213
Had the same problems recently: try; #urpmi glibc-static [ The GUI way is pretty much how Chuck describes it.] And to run notepad the command is simply: $notepad [ You don't use all the rest like you WILL do when you start installing other programs.] Regards Frank Big or small, a challenge requires the same commitment to resolve. Registered Linux User # 324213 Chuck Lutz wrote: Hi, I'm still getting up to speed with Wine, so I can't help with the first one, but I had this error too (static glibc req'd). I went to the Configuration "Package Manager" thing (I think that is what it is called) and chose "Install software". From there I typed "glibc" in the search line and also I listed the packages by update availability (I think that's what it was). It did a search and produced an "Addable" category; in there I was able to identify the static glibc libraries. After installing that I was able to compile/configure/install Wine. NB: After a conversation on the Wine IRC channel I found out that, contrary to the advice in the Wine User Guide, that RPMs are reliable (well, at least those from the official winehq.com site) and so I didn't really need to go the the 2+ hour compile road... So you might consider grabbing the 06152004 version from the website- it is the latest. NB: the graphical configure tool included only works up to the version before 06152004, but you might not need it anyway, esp. if you are doing a 'no windows' install. Re: [newbie] Wine 20040213
Hi, I'm still getting up to speed with Wine, so I can't help with the first one, but I had this error too (static glibc req'd). I agree with Scott. Check out http://appdb.winehq.com and see if anyone else has gotten MessageCleaner to work. Also, you might want to join the wine users mailing list and ask if anyone there has gotten it working. Well, Mandrake comes with a wine RPM, you should just need to use the Install Software link, find wine and install it. Once you do, it should install a daemon called wineserver that should automatically pick up any .exe file that you run. You may need to edit your wine config file to actually point to your CD drive among other things, but since those settings are dependent on your system, I am not sure that there is such a thing as an easy howto to tell you how to do it. I can help you get the config setup by asking for pertinent info and sending you a copy of the proper settings to use. If you just want a sample, I can send you a copy of mine offlist, just so that you can go through and see what the settings look like but installing the RPM should get you pretty close to where you need to be. Other options would be to buy Crossover Office or WineX since both include installation routines and have built in installers for applications. > So...are there any good "Wine for *Complete Dummies*" tutorials out > there you could recommend? Thanks! My personal recommendation would be to just install the RPM and see where you are at and move on from there. You might be surprised at how quickly you can get it going by just installing the RPM and making a few minor changes to the /home/user/.wine/config file. -- Bryan Phinney Software Test Engineer Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I've looked at several Linux email clients, and I've yet to find anything that even comes close to The Bat in terms of overall mail management/interface, filter and template power, or composition (TB! has many useful plain text editing options that I haven't seen in any of the Linux clients I've looked at or tried so far). I've also asked around on some Bat user's mail lists, and *all* of the Linux users say that they've never seen any Linux email client that comes close in these areas that are important to me (and to them). For those with high expectations with regards to email clients, while they might use Linux for many things, they still keep Windows around so they can use TB for their email. Others have said that the *only* reason they're reluctant to make a complete switch to Linux from Windows is not being able to run TB natively on Linux. What I really wish for is to have The Bat ported to Linux, so that all of us can benefit from this amazing email client! :-) I've been told that since The Bat is written in "Delphi", it shouldn't be too difficult to port it to Linux (and yes...I've written to the TB developers asking them to do this). I just hope it can happen soon. I'm pretty happy with Knode as a news reader (haven't yet tried slrn or others), but I'm having a real hard time getting used to what I feel are pretty major "downgrade" issues moving from The Bat to any of the Linux clients I've seen so far. I'm not sure if Wine would be good for operating essential services like a mail client. It works for a lot of programs, but it's quirky: your program might not run at all, it might run slowly, or it might run fine until you use some obscure feature, then crash. It emulates the windows api and allows windows programs to run under Linux. There are other programs that actually allow windows to run under linux. Win4Lin and VMware are these kinds of programs. Win4Lin is the cheaper option of you only need the Win9x (including WinME) at $89. VMware costs about $300 but actually creates a virtual PC and allows you to run just about any operating system. Both are commercial programs and you need to own a valid license for Windows too. With Wine you don't need a windows license. I personally use Win4Lin and I highly recommend it. Is my solution to get more memory? If it's a Windows error message (rather than wine saying something in the terminal) then your problem is probably not RAM. [newbie] Wine and Memory
11/15/03 Hello All, I have 128MB of RAM. I ran Wine two different ways to see if one of my Microsoft Win95B programs would run. Method 1) change to the Win95 program directory (already installed, this is a dual boot Win95B and Mandrake 9.1 system.) Run Wine with the program name. I got an out of memory error. Method 2) Point Wine at the cdrom installation disk for the Windows program and run Wine on the setup file. I had to select Reinstall as the installation choice since I hadn't uninstalled the program. The reinstall goes okay, but when it comes up to run the program I get the same out of memory error. There shouldn't be any problem about using it with 9.2. Did you install winesetuptk? It is a different program which must be installed separately. Running it will help configure wine to the idiosyncrasies of your system. All the most recent Mandrake binaries for wine and winesetuptk are located at: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=6241 Winesetuptk 0.7 has just been released. This latest version contains a new winedefault.reg. You don't need to run "regedit winedefault.reg" any more to install a windows registry for wine's use, and it has been updated to configure all the latest features of wine. If you install a later wine than came with your package, it is important to remove the previous wine first before installing it. I use the Mandrake control center, and it does a thorough job of removing the old wine packages. deedee Registered Linux User #327485 Visit "WordStar & GNU/Linux" http://www.wordstar2.com Also, see the WordStar Users Group http://www.wordstar2.com/cbabbage/wordstar Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Crossover-Office is real easy to install in my experience, and works precisely as Codeweavers says it does for supported applications. Supported applications are just selected from a GUI. You just put in the CDs when prompted. If you are installing the Crossover-plugin version, then the supported plugins are downloaded for you over the Internet and installed for you. And if you do have problems, their support staff are the most efficient I have ever encountered. Really nice people. Moreover Codeweavers are the single biggest contributor of code to the Wine project. derek -- -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? hi jamie! did you copy the config file from the soruces to your $HOMR/.wine/? you can find it in the documentation/samples/ folder. create a folder called ".wine"(this is a hidden folder) in you home dir and put the config file into it. you have to edit this things to your mountpoints: [Drive A] "Path" = "/mnt/floppy" "Type" = "floppy" "Label" = "Floppy" "Serial" = "87654321" "Device" = "/dev/fd0" if you've got a windows partition, use it. there are all needed dlls installed and so on, most of the programs will work. if you don't have a windows partition, you've to create a fake windows ;) with windows partition: hust edit the path here to your win partition [Drive C] "Path" = "/mnt/win_c" "Type" = "hd" "Label" = "MS-DOS" "Filesystem" = "win95" without: create folder fakewin on the root or somewhere else, you've to edit the path in the drive c section. [Drive C] "Path" = "/fakewin/" "Type" = "hd" "Label" = "MS-DOS" "Filesystem" = "win95" you can copy these to things: [Drive E] "Path" = "/tmp" "Type" = "hd" "Label" = "Tmp Drive" "Filesystem" = "win95" [Drive F] "Path" = "${HOME}" "Type" = "network" "Label" = "Home" "Filesystem" = "win95" these things are the most importent!!: [wine] "Windows" = "c:\windows" "System" = "c:\windows\system" "Temp" = "e:\" "Path" = "c:\windows;c:\windows\system;e:\;e:\test;f:\" "Profile" = "c:\windows\Profiles\Administrator" you've to edit the paths corectly! if you're using wine without a windows partition, you've to create all these folders on your own! if you dont, wine wont work! and thats the way the cookie crumbles ;) i did these things and wine worked. but my photoshop isnt working. version 6 AND 7 don't work! i could install them, but cannot start them... :( if you get it work, please let me know! hope it helpes greets from the called sweitzerland ;) remo Zitat von Jamie Taylor <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > Has anyone had any success at getting Wine to work properly. > I've compiled the source and installed it then ran winesetuptk but I can't > seem to get any Windows programs to work. > I will soon try to migrate all of my PC stuff to Linux based programs as I > want to get windows off my pc ASAP. > I want to use Photoshop and a few other programs like Acid and Sound Forge. > If I had the cash I would get Crossover Office but I don't so any links or > help would be much appreciated. > > Cheers > > Jamie Taylor > > P.S. please do not say use The Gimp because I am used to Photoshop and I > don't > like The Gimp's user interface. > > Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? You've already received a link for Frank's Corner. Wine developers hang out and answer questions on the wine newsgroup at comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine. There is a mailing list for wine-users which can be subscribed to at http://www.winehq.com/mailman/listinfo/wine-users -- wine developers also answer questions there. There are two issues with regard to Wine. Since it's alpha software, one issue is to get it properly working. Did you run winecheck after compiling and installing source? That will identify possible areas where your Wine may be having trouble. The second issue is getting your applications to work under Wine. Not everything does. Not every dll and api for MS-Windows has been created. If your software needs something that hasn't yet been done, it probably won't work well, assuming that it works at all. You might inquire on Wine lists if anyone else has gotten your program favorites to work. A major advantage offered by CodeWeavers is the fact that their developers are paid to work on those problems. If they take on your software, it is guaranteed that it will be able to work (because they make certain all the dlls and apis it needs are created). It is possible to interest developers on the Wine lists in your software, but they are doing it as volunteers and they will need a lot of input from you in order to succeed. Whether or not you get your programs to work under Wine has a lot to do with how much time and effort you're willing to put into it. I've had no problem with getting Wine itself to work, however, and to run quite a few programs, though not all that I would like it to run. I'm not running any of the ones you mention. deedee Registered Linux User #327485 Visit "WordStar & GNU/Linux" http://www.wordstar2.com Also, see the WordStar Users Group http://www.wordstar2.com/cbabbage/wordstar Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Wine setup
Hi Mike, In general, I've not found any "issues" as such between Mandrake Linux and Wine. I have Wine working on Mandrake 8.1 and 9.1 systems. In both cases, the applications I use Wine for were installed on a Win98SE partition before Linux was installed on the box. I'm using the default setup with only Wine dlls (builtin) for mswindows. The applications, of course, use their own (native) dlls. I haven't booted up mswindows for ages and do everything that I need with those programs via Wine under Linux. I do have a rule of thumb for dealing with all things Linux, however. I check first to make sure that something really isn't working before I start scouring How Tos to "fix" it. My experience with Linux is that it's easy to wrongly conclude something isn't working, and "fixing" something that isn't broken can lead to big headaches. There are two separate issues with Wine: Is your Wine installation okay? And, what are the particular needs of each application you want to run under it? Wine doesn't run everything. I believe it will run Kazaa. although I personally haven't tried running Kazaa. I'm using an old CodeWeavers Wine (April 2002) on the Mandrake 8.1 system and, on the Mandrake 9.1 system, I'm using the August 2003 Wine compiled on Mandrake 9.1 and available on the Winehq Italia site at http://digilander.libero.it/winehqitalia/ -- both were RPMs and installed easily. CodeWeavers comes with winesetuptk. The Winehq Italia site has a winesetuptk that you can download. I used that to setup Wine and produce the original config and folders. Once done, I then modified anything that didn't work well for me. Also, on the Mandrake 9.1 CDs, there's a graphical frontend that I've found useful for setting up individual mswindows applications. It's called XWine (not the same as WineX, the Wine for gamers). There's an updated version at http://darken.tuxfamily.org -- the site's in French, but click the flag to go to English. On your fake_windows directory, everything should be set up just the same as it would have been using an actual mswindows release. So if the dll goes in c:/windows/system in mswindows, then it would go in ~/.wine/fake_windows/windows/system under Wine. There's a mailing list for Wine users at http://www.winehq.com/mailman/listinfo/wine-users and an active newsgroup that can be read using your browser via Google. Sorry for the length of the post. I know that people can find Wine confusing. deedee On Sun Sep 7 11:46:11 2003 Michael Lothian wrote: > I've been through the howto on wiki but I'm still having difficulties > > I copyed the required dlls from my XP installation and used the latest > version of wine from where the artical recommended. > > I managed to install Kazaa (some of the fonts were a bit funny) but it > would just gointo debug mode when I tried to run it > > I then tried copying all my dll files over into wine but that had even > more dire consquences ie kazaa wouldn't even install > > So to the people who have wine working: > > What dlls did you use. [newbie] Wine setup
Hi I've been through the howto on wiki but I'm still having difficulties I copyed the required dlls from my XP installation and used the latest version of wine from where the artical recommended. I managed to install Kazaa (some of the fonts were a bit funny) but it would just gointo debug mode when I tried to run it I then tried copying all my dll files over into wine but that had even more dire consquences ie kazaa wouldn't even install So to the people who have wine working: What dlls did you use. Which folers did you put them in (system or system32) and what did you pop into your wine configuration file? Also is it recomened to use winex from transgaming for games? Or is there an alternative? It's an OEM edition but i will give it a try. Now, my problem is to create a boot-floppy. If I understand you correctly, there is a setup directory on the CD, so I'll follow your advice once I have a boot floppy. Maybe I'm a little naïve : I've been browsing around this OEM CD to find a Windows equivalent of Linux's rawrite and a boot image, but with no luck. As someone suggested I'll try to pull one off the net. I guess, that getting win98 onto this old Thinkpad is my best option for my daughter. That way her *main* PC can stay *clean*. RE: [newbie] Wine question
When you install wine, it creates a fake enviroment for windows apps. usually in /var/lib/wine eg: [EMAIL PROTECTED] www]# cd /var/lib/wine [EMAIL PROTECTED] wine]# ls autoexec.bat config.sys My Documents/ Program Files/ windows/ as you can see, you have all the typical directories a windows program could possibly look for. So in the path, just use the c:\program files\someappname and wine will see to it that it gets put in the right place. Wine bascially fools those apps into thinking that c:\x actuall exists when really its putting the stuff in /var/lib/wine/program files/somedir make sense? now go forth and konquer. :-) regards Franki htmlfixit.com >-Original Message- >From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Kaj Haulrich >Sent: Saturday, 16 August 2003 4:37 AM >To: Newbie >Subject: [newbie] Wine question > > >Through the years I've noticed that quite a few people on this >great list dual boots Windows occasionally. [newbie] wine device driver.exe
Hello, I have cheap camera Samsung digimax 130. It isn't supported by Linux. Is it possible to use it via Wine? At least this driver exe installed in Wine-c, I just move it there and then #wine 130.exe and #wine setup.exe and windows like wizards popped up and didn't give ane errors and stopped to this windows claim now you must reboot :) Little while I thought is it really gonna reboot :) But now when I connect camera to usb, I still don't reconize it anyhow? Is it possible to use any device via Wine? Or is it just designed for programs? Is there by the way any fear of w32 viruses? It crossed my mind when I saw how well this exe installed? [newbie] wine, Mappoint 2003 installation issue
I edited the ~/.wine/config file and it looks good according to winhq.com's site. I started the isntallation with /mnt/cdrom/setup.exe, it wanted to install IE5, i selected the standard option. It started installing stuff and then came up with this message: System Files Update Setup Error 1311. Source file not found: D:\OSP\1033\OSP1.CAB. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it. RETRY CANCEL with this following message in the background: Installation: current action: copying new files copying file: agentanm.dll CANCEL So i cd'd to mnt/cdrom/osp/1033/ and OSP1.CAB is not there, it sees osp1.msi. I tried to install the MSI and it came back with permission denied. The file is owned by root, i was logged in as root to run the MSI. I dont see anything on google or winhq about this. Any thoughts? Re: [newbie] wine
Not sure about your problem, but it might be that you're not providing the full path of the exe. file. For example, in order to run MS Access I use: wine /mnt/windows/"Program Files"/"Microsoft Office"/Office/msaccess.exe (Note the quotes!). The things I've used (Word, Access and Excel) also seem to behave better if Run in Terminal.(You get a normal sized window, nonetheless) Hope this is some help. Unless you are fairly savvy with Linux you are likely to get frustrated with 'Standard Wine' from Winehq. It needs to be configured ,and the configuration for one Windows application does not always suit another. You are more likely to have success with the Wine version distributed by Codeweavers (http://www.codeweavers.com/technology/wine/ ) It comes with quite a nice GUI to configure it. If you simply want your Windows applications to "Just work" the best way to do it is to put your hand in your pocket and pay for either a copy of Codeweavers Office which is a Wine release verified to run many Windows office applications like Word and Quicken, or else subscribe to www.transgaming.com for an edition of Wine which will play some Windows games. In both cases you should check that the Windows apps you want to use are actually supported. Alternatively you could find a Linux application with equivalent functionality ;-) HTH derek -- -- www.jennings.homelinux.net Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] WINE or something similar??
Well my experience has been that the only open source option is wine, however wine is not so stable and requires a lot of fiddling to get it to work, and it is not so fast. VM ware is not for everyone, if you are testing on many OSes it probably is the best choice. I don't know all thats out there but for explorer and similar apps Crossover office works fine. >From what I have read on this list Win4Lin is much faster and runs more apps.
