Re: [newbie] Wrong Choice of Monitor while installation

2001-12-25 Thread Dennis Herndon

This can actually be kind of fun. I changed video boards to an openGL
compatible board so I could run Tux Racer. I really screwed up and
could not really see on my monitor once Linux booted up. In fact it
would not launch X-windows. So I had to actually run XF86config to redo
the monitor and video board. So log in as root and run the config file
to change your settings. Once it is saved, you should be good to go.

I made the same mistake when installing 8.1. What follows works for 8.1, but
I don't know about 7.2. I simply re-ran the installation process, choosing
"update" and expert mode. I made no changes to the file system nor selected
any software packages. When it comes time to select a monitor, I made sure to
pick the correct one. (Using expert mode gives you much more control at this
point, and if I recall lets you test your choice.) If none of the choices
seem right, pick a plain vanilla generic monitor for now and fix it later
from the Mandrake Control Center.

Before doing this, boot into Win2K and see how Windows identifies your
monitor.

Once booted, press ctrl+alt+F1 to change to a text console. Login as root and
then type 'XFdrake'. Enter your settings and you should be fine.
