[newbie] X problems
Before I proceed, I would like to greet averyone on this list. I am new to the list, so if I make any mistakes : a. Bare with me b. Tell me where I went wrong Here goes my problem. I've been having issues with mandrake 8.2 (tried to upgrade from 8.1), so I decided to install my freshly downloaded copy of linux Mandrake 9.0. Everything went fine up to the X-window part. Installation went smoothly and linux asked my resolution for X. I have an Eizo 19" monitor and a Kyro Hercules 4000 with 32Mb of RAM, so the system thought it would be a good idea to suggest 1240X1024 16-bit colour. When installation finished I got the above resolution which is not the best for my eyes, so I tried to tweak the res with the help of XFdrake but to no avail. I , now, lost all X-windows and the only thing I did was to change the boot resolution on /etc/lilo.conf from 1240x1024 to 800x600 (note: that's the "vga=" part on lilo.conf). I suspect that something went wrong there and the system will no longer launch X-windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any given docs for XF86-4.x Looks like it's very different from previous versions of XF86 (say 3.3.6). [newbie] X problems
Hello, I have Mandrake 8.0 on my laptop (Compaq 1200) and have had no problems for months. After a clean shutdown, I tried to log back in, but my X server will not start. It has problems trying to set the FontPath to unix/:-1. Has anyone experienced a problem like this before? What was the resolution? Thanks. [newbie] X problems on Dell laptop using LM8.0
I have installed LM8.0 on a Dell Latitude CPi 400CT. This laptop has a MagicGraph 256ZX graphic adapter.Every time I start X I get an error message saying "16bpp not supported on this chipset" (or 24 or whatever I choose). I am aware that laptops are special, but I got it to work in LM7.2 (and there were no big problems then), so why does it not work in 8.0? When I change it to 8bit color I get 4 (vertically parallel) blurry versions of the screen. What can I do make this work? (I have got 64mb spare but i'm sure wheather it works ok, because it didn't seem to go in win98?) Does anyone know of how to solve this? ALSO when using xfdrake in cosole mode, when you test it is fine but you can't go back, i belive this is because it runs x?

Hmm...I was getting transparent overlapping windows. It's the video card. Doesn't jive that well with LM 6.1 it seems. Try adding option="noaccel" to the video card "Device" section of XF86Config. That did the trick for me. If you have more trouble read: 1 ) http://www.debian.org/Lists-Archives/debian-user-9904/msg01311.html 2) http://www.math.sunysb.edu/~comech/tools/3DImage975.html The second one deals with this video card in terms of Linux in depth. Good luck! Gregg

[newbie] X problems
I got a serious problem with X when I make a new instalation of Mandrake 6.1. I installed it on a machine with a previous Mandrake 6.0, working fine with X - KDE. When I got my Mandrake 6.1 CD I backuped my machine and I formatted it and make a full instalation of 6.1 (with all packages). All process was ok. But when I tried config X, after choose my video board (trident 975image AGP) and the correct monitor (custom - The same setup I made with 6.0) and when the sistem try to run the test, I only get a blank screen with white lines on top (sometimes when I move the mouse, this line desapears). Ok, so I try install Red Hat 6.1 and everything works fine - with the same video board and monitor setup. Mandrake 6.0 and Red Hat 6.1 works with my video board and Mandrake 6.1 doesn't work, why? Since I prefer Mandrake, I don't want to use Red Hat 6.1 Does somebody know what is wrong ? Regards, Anderson Miranda Virtualcase Brasil ICQ# 54651099

Their usual advice is to just 'wipe and reload'. I'm glad you fixed your problem, but with Windows I learned to maintain it, and that's the course I'm lookin for with Mandrake. With Windows, all that really needs to be done is to clean, preen, and baby the Registry by an experienced user. I'm gonna follow the path that Mandrake just deserves the same repect, as does any distro. So my advice can only be, if you start havin' different, but similar problems with RH it'll be high time to start lookin real hard at the No.1 cause of computer problems, the interface between the keyboard, mouse, and chair ;-> BTW, I leave in the mornin for Alabama, anybody goin to the races at Dega? I meet with a lot'a I-net friends, usually in OV Hill S Sec M-N Row 25, before noon. Look for people wearin stuff that says RASN (rec.autos.sport.nascar). Go #3 (either one :) .. He suggested that i try another distro since i had no huge time or data invested with Linux-Mandrake. I used his Red Hat 6.0 disk from cheapbytes.com and got things installed with no problem; so now i just need to play with xvidtune a little and ditch the GNOME desktop as i like what little i've seen of KDE. I selected the generic ps/2 mouse and RH probed things correctly and setting up X was no problemam i correct in assuming that i can use the X11Config file from this installation with a Linux- Mandrake install also??? I believe a lot of the mouse problems I keep reading about on this list and the NG's, might just well be motherboard issues as the mouse itself. I buy keyboards and mice for $5-$10 each, when they start to not work properly or just get too dirty, I toss 'em and get a new one. The result is I've had a lot of keybds/mice, and generally when they don't want to work properly from the start, it's just as often the motherboard/OS configuration. -- .. Re: [newbie] X problems
I have a Logitec 2 button FirstMouse set up to emulate 3 buttons. I have also tried the mouse without 3 button emulation with no luck. I am going to try upgrading to XFree86-3.3.5 since mandrake 6.0 uses 3.3.3.1; hopefully, this may help resolve my problem. scott

I have a similar problem but the mouse pointer is invisible in KDE. I have the same video card and a CTX 1451ES monitor. If you find out anything I would greatly appreciate hearing about the solution. [newbie] X problems
I have successfully installed linux-mandrake 6.0 on my system, a 200 mHz pentium with a S3 ViRGE/ VX video card (4MB memory) and a Mag Innovision DX1795 monitor. Autoprobing successfully identifies the video card, and i then select the DX1795 monitor. the Xconfig test states that i can use 32-bit, 1024 x 768 resolution; HOWEVER, this setting and the numerous other resolutions and custom monitor settings I have tried do not work completely: I can get a KDE desktop with icons, but no mouse other than a 1-inch long vertical line that disappears and then reappears (occasionally). I have a Logitec 2-button mouse, configured for 3-button emulation. Any help on additional settings or documentation that may help me get things running would be appreciated. I checked the /usr/X11r6/lib/X11/doc/README.Monitors file, but found no info pertinent to the Mag DX1795. thanks --> Scott
