SCO ready to clean out Linux users for $1399 per CPU
By Ashlee Vance in Chicago
Posted: 05/08/2003 at 21:35 GMT

Linux users face a serious question. Is $699 too much to pay for a good
bath?

The $699 scrubbing fee is exactly how much SCO wants for one CPU's worth
of a Linux license, and that's just for the time being. Come October 15,
the single CPU fee jumps to a whopping $1,399.

This is the latest word from SCO handed down by Mr. Clean himself - SCO
CEO Darl McBride, during a Tuesday conference call. SCO had been holding
out on exactly how much it planned to charge Linux users for their use
of what it claims is borrowed Unix code, but now all has been made clear
- crystal clear.

"Cleary, it's at a point and time where we are going to take matters
into our own hands and move forward," McBride said. "It's time to start
marching onward again with our legal claims."

McBride enjoys referring to Linux users as a "tainted" bunch. He seems
to see them as some group of unbathed mongrels that that covet other
peoples' intellectual property for their coding pig-pens.

This really isn't the nicest language to use for such an amicable crew,
especially when SCO's real beef is with IBM and Red Hat. But SCO claims
that IBM and Red Hat are the ones that forced it to put the blame on
Linux users. Since IBM and Red Hat won't rush to the Linux community's
rescue and hand over millions for unproven claims, SCO must attack the
little guys.

And attack it has. Both the $699 and $1,399 fees are a hefty price to
pay for something you are not even sure exists.

Does SCO own some pieces of Linux? Is it IBM's fault? Is Red Hat to
blame as well? Only a court can decide this, and the IBM lawsuit is not
set for trial until 2005 with any legal action against Red Hat following
that.

Dropping a few bucks for a car-wash may make more practical sense in the
near term, if being clean concerns you.

If, however, you are an enterprise Linux customer that wants to go ahead
and shell out a few grand for the 'dirty' Linux servers in your data
center, then give 1-800-726-8649 a call. Customer service representative
are standing by. SCO has hosed them down with a month's worth of
training.

SCO is not saying how much a multiprocessor or embedded license will
cost just yet. Representatives on the conference call noted that
providing such information would bore the tech journos and analysts
ringing in. Not true.

These details are to be posted on SCO's Web site at some point and time.
The licensing needs, of course, only apply to users of the Linux kernel
2.4 and above.

Should you have any doubts about how far SCO plans to take this death
march, have a quick peek at the SCO Forum page. It's here that we are
told, "The World Is Not Enough." (Thanks for that, Charles.) ®

Guess I'll understand it when they stop saying that Foster's is
"Australian for Beer" in all the commercials. And we may make the stuff
for Americans, but it's not as strong as the beer we have here. It's
thinned out for Americans. Eitther way, this is about taking a few days
off, flying down to see Stephen & Frankie, kickin' back and relaxing,
not about beer.

Besides, I'm a Rickard's man myself.

By the way, call me a schmuck again, and I'll personally fly down there,
rip your head off, and puke down the hole.

On the other hand, if you can suggest a good beer when I get there, I'll
buy the first round, and we'll find a couple of "companions" to cut his
lawn.

Your call Richard. Either way, I'm good to go if you are.

In the interests of historical accuracy, I first heard the bit comparing
American beer to making love in a canoe while living in Canada in the early
1950's -- and I expect that it had been around a few years before that.

I'm thinking about suing Monty Python for copyright violation. Just think what

Well, that was "Darmok" and the other captain & crew only were able to
speak using emtaphors. For example "Juliet on her balcony".

It was one of the better episodes. THroughout the early 1990s I remember
people on BBSes and newsgroups (precursors and alternates to Usenet at
the time) using phrases from that episode quite a bit.

Another episode (from ST Voyager) features a group of people who are
involved in paramilitary operations who speak English, but whose choice
of words are littered with words that one would not use in everyday
speech. It is as if they wrote the script normally, and then did a
search & replace with a thesaurus plugin :). For instance, they'd
substitute 'look' with 'glance'.

I think I understand now! I didn't really believe it until now, but I guess it's true!
I saw this kind of thing happen on Star Trek - TNG once. Remember the episode where
Captain Picard was on a planet with an alien where they both spoke English, but they
couldn't understand each other? The other guy spoke in phrases that never made sense!
Things like "His arms open", or "Jilahd - on an island". None of it made sense to
Jean-Luc at all. I think I understand the roots of Australian now! Only difference was
that the alien spoke with an American accent! Always wondered about that.

Thing is,...I'm not sure I want to understand your quotation !

The Apollo astronauts used something similar to dispose of bodily waste.
They came in three sizes: small, medium and large, which were
immediately renamed huge, enormous and gigantic. The astronauts
invariably chose one size too large. The technicians who had to clean
the spacesuits after an eight hour plus training session called these
guys "wetbacks."

While that might have been the case 15 years ago, it's no longer true. There
are a number of breweries in the USA who produce a variety of very high
quality beers. Some of them are distributed nationally (Sam Adams, Pete's,
Anchor Steam, Shiner, Saranac, ESB get a lot of my trade), others are
regional or local. Beyond that, imported beers are available in most stores,
restaurants and bars -- even cut'n'shoots.

IIRC, the Foster's that we get here is brewed in Canada. I tried some. Once.
The label should have a picture of a couple making love in a canoe.

Sharrea, I really hope your not a kiwi, I was beginning to like you due to
the domain of your email address.

besides, a Kiwi is just about the right height to get excited by a sheep.
:-)

As an aside.. did you know that wallabies and kangaroo's have 2 penis's???
(or more correctly one that is split into two.) so a sheep would not be a
suitable target anyway. :-)

I'll give them some money when they pay me for submitting bug reports
back in 1990 for SCO XENIX...or if Darl McBride flies out here and cuts

All Australian beer except those labelled "lite" are 5.5 percent alc...

Bite my bag lanman.. we have lottsa beer here that is 5.5%... :-)
3% is for the "light" beer, which I don't drink anyway.

A 6 pack of super is a primary requisite for any linux install in this
house.
Over here, I call that a "powerPack". :-)

Ingo; Be careful. We're not talking about Canadian beer here, we're talking about that
weak Aussie beer. No Keith's Pale Ale down there! Stephen, what's the alcohol content
of beer down there? 3% or something like that? If it's higher than Canadian beer, I'm
in too! If there's a lot of beer, I'll even dress up Frankie and drag his a$$ across
the country to your place and he can help! ROFL!

But if it's that weak stuff, then you better think about doubling that price!

Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. Five years later?
Six? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era -- the kind of peak that
never comes again. San Fransisco in the middle sixties was a very special time
and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long
run... There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the
Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda... You could
strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we
were doing was right, that we were winning...
And that, I think, was the handle -- that sense of inevitable victory
over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't
need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting
-- on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest
of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go
up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes
you can almost ___see the high-water mark -- that place where the wave finally
broke and rolled back.

Re: [newbie] You guys all owe SCO $1399 for your Mandrake

2003-08-09 Thread Thinker
I have been watching this thread for a while and .. well, I may not know
much about Linux but I can say that ...

1. Being an American that is married to a German woman, everyone I know
drinks Warsteiner Dark at room temperature. They say it is not so much
that American beer is weak, it is more that they put too many
preservatives and other additives in it. And they say Americans like
their beer cold because they cant stand to taste it any other way. So I
am thinking Warsteiner Dark or Peach Schnapps chasers and you will all
be good to go.

2. Being an American from the great state of Tennessee I think all I
have to say is 'Corn in a Jar'. Those of you that know what I am talking
about would agree; this remedy and no one will be mowing anything
anytime soon.

3. As for the smaller condoms... Evolution dictates the size of the male
sexual organ. Nature tells us that we 'Americans' don't have to be
equipped for sex with farm animals,
I admit some of my countrymen may be a little smaller than you in the
Outback. We don't have the "Sheepskin for sheep" label here in the US.

So yes, I am sure you guys are a little bigger. Otherwise, I suspect you
guys would have some pretty pissed off sheep.

Now back to the show...

Of course NZ gets your stinky Fosters and the not-so-stinky VB. Actually,

When I had a farm in Kentucky, I was lucky to have had a friend that had
a heap of goats that needed a "home" - so we strung up some wire and
let'em graze away at the sides of the holler...when it was bare enough,
we just moved the wire...in a month's time, one side of the holler was
completely like a golf course (aside from the trees, that is...)

Didn't cost me a thing, and didn't require that I did any real work...
