[newbie] Gaim-Fixed Problem
The fix is disappointing. I urpme'ed the mdk that urpmi installs, then dl'ed the gaim-1.0.1-0mdk9.2.i586.rpm from sourceforge. It installs and runs properly as far as I can tell. At least I can login now. Thanks to the person who suggested sourceforge in the first place. It would have saved me another couple of hours of mdk frustration had I listened. Okay I have gaim installed, I have signed in to Yahoo Messenger in Win2k. Problem is gaim says "incorrect password" when I try to check in. Paul I was reluctant to try it because the MDK 9.2 rpm for 0.77 didn't work for my 10.0 installation. I'm not sure why that is and I've forgotten the "symptoms" that I encountered but I was able to find a 10.0 rpm for 0.77 that worked well. I keep telling myself I need to learn more about rolling my own, so to speak, but between long work hours and family, it just never seems to happen. I usually am comfortable installing from sources but GAIM upgrades so often that I prefer to use rpms with this particular app. Thanks, Carl Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? In my screem-0.8.2-0.1 build I did include, as an additional source, a php.lang file, which with the installation of screem-0.8.2 is installed in /usr/share/gtksourceview-1.0/language-specs allowing for php highlighting. This is not an official file, and because it actually should belong to another pkg, will most likely not be included in the mdk screem release. open a text console (or term) to log in (as root you if you need to kill a program started as root, type su [enter] root [enter] type password for root, do not expect to see anything echped to screen as you type the password) type "top" [enter] (without the quotes) and look for gaim there are a few ways to sort top, and a few ways to get the same info (ps aux gives the whole she-bang of running processes) then you will see the number of the processes "gaim" started. and in top, you can do k 3407 [enter, enter] (changing 3407 to match whatever number is the assigned number for the process) On Tuesday 05 March 2002 11:44, you wrote: > Hi all, > I thought I might be able to give you some peace, but no such luck! Ctl+Alt+Esc then click on the locked up window There is also an icon on your desktop called XKill Click on that then click on the failed application Ctl+Alt+Backspace to kill your KDE session All this stuff is covered in the manual which is accessed by the Documentation icon on your desktop. file:/usr/share/doc/mandrake/en/ref.html/ts-killing-apps.html To stop gaim starting automatically when you log in, then kill gaim, log off with the 'restore desktop' box checked. Log off. Next time you log on gaim will not start, but be sure that the next time you log off the 'restore session' box is unchecked. People always get confused by the restore session thing. KDE in fact will 'always' restore a session. Checking the box simply tells KDE to restore 'this' session. If the box is not checked it will restore from a previous session when the box 'was' checked. derek On Tuesday 05 March 2002 16:44, you wrote: > Hi all, > I thought I might be able to give you some peace, but no such luck! [newbie] gaim crash - won't go away!
Hi all, I thought I might be able to give you some peace, but no such luck! I tried to use gaim to get onto my msn account, but it has crashed and I can't get rid of it. I have it sitting there not responding on my desktop, and can't shut it down. Under windows I would simply do a ctrl/alt/del How do I end task in Linux? I've tried rebooting, but when the desktop comes back, so does gaim, still stuck there. I'm sure there is a keystroke somewhere equivalent to 'end task' - what on earth is it? On the one occasion it decided to close itself, when I reopened, it did so in a crashed state and wouldn't go away! H

I first uninstalled the thing, made sure no .gaim and .gaimrc files were left in ~/ and then I installed the latest version, 0.9.20, after which it worked. You can get the latest version at www.marko.net/gaim, compiling and setting it up was really simple. Better add paulnl1960, instead of paul1960 *grin* Paul as my name, nl as in Netherlands, and indeed, 1960 as year of birth. Either that or the number of split personalities. I'll ask myself. *g* Paul. nl. 1960. -- The person who is never wrong is totally wrong - Tennyson )0([[EMAIL PROTECTED]])0( http://nlpagan.net - ICQ 147208 Registered Linux User 174403 -=PINE 4.21+Linux Mandrake 7.1=-

Upgrade to the latest version from cooker, I had the same problem and that fixed it. Mike > Anyone know if the GAIM that comes with 7.1 works, or has AOL sabotage the > configuration? Re: [newbie] GAIM L-M 7.1
The GAIM that came with 7.1 does NOT work as it is not configured properly. Also, I believe it is 0.9.19 and there is a newer version out on their website. Go to http://www.marko.net/gaim. Click on their "Official FTP Site" and go to the 0.9.20 RPM -- download it and install it. It no longer comes up on your menu but if you Alt F2 and type in gaim you get it. The strange thing is I don't see any place to enter "buddies" after the "no configuration" error comes back. But then again..., I've NEVER used a chat list of any kind, so perhaps I don't know what I'm actually doing ;o) When my new computer arrives from ASL late next week, I'll try to get the kids set up, and then, who knows, maybe I'll even try to set up anaccount for myself. I'll definitely add paul1960 to my list to see if your running (1960 the year of your birth) Take care, and Thanks very much again, Mike "Always remember that I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me." --Winston Churchill Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com.

In case you want to give it a try, my Gaim-Name (gaim-naim? ;-) is paulnl1960. Perhaps it is running when you get online with it (I am not online 24/7) so we can check if it does work! [newbie] GAIM L-M 7.1
Anyone know if the GAIM that comes with 7.1 works, or has AOL sabotage the configuration? My sons use AIM in W98 and it's about the only thing they log into windows for. If I can get GAIM working they'd probably stick to linux exclusively. When I enter one their login names and password, it comes back "no configuration". If I use the wrong password, I get the error message "Login failed" or something to that effect. I don't see anything that would allow me to make special configuration arrangements w/i GAIM itself. Any suggestions? TIA, Mike "Many loads of beer were brought. What disorder, whoring, fighting, killing and dreadful idolatry took place there!"
