Hi, These instructions are brief, and 7.2 tested, but should work much
the same way with 8 and 8.1. your question was about mirroring which is
slightly slower then a single drive, but you will have data redundency
(same info on two drives.)
RAID0  -> splits data on to two drives for inproved performance.
RAID1  -> Mirror data on more then one drive to create redundancy.
(slower)
RAID2  onwards, mixes mirroring and striping to give benefits of both in
different mixes, usually needs 3 or more drives.

I will concentraite on the first two RAID inplimentations.
1. Hook both your drives up.
2. Boot from MDK CDROM and select Expert install.
3. Choose Diskdrake when you get asked.
4. Create a 20MB partition of EXT2 on drive1, and point it to /boot.
(boot is tiny and doesn't benefit from Raid.)
5. Find the area on disk one that you want to be the first Raid-0 array,
and select "Add to Raid" It will be called md0 by default (md means
multiple disk)
you can then set what level of RAID you want. leave the chunksize of
64k. (its the size of strips accross the drives. 64k is a good default
for large and small files.)
6. Select equal size partition on drive 2. and "Add to Raid" select md0
for target.
7. Do the same on both drives with the swap, (ie create equal swap
partitions on each drive creating md1 for both..
8. Click the RAID tab in diskdrake click on  the RAID arrays free space
(md0) and choose REISERFS, (or whatever FS you want.) then do the same
for md1 except select linux Swap..
9. Set the mount point for md0 to / (ie the root partition).    I think
the swap will be allocated automatically.
10 Install linux as per normal from that point, MDK should do the rest
for you.

Thats it, when finished you will have your linux box booting in software
RAID, if you chose mirroring it will be a tiny bit slower then one drive
(because its writing data twice), but if you chose striping it will be
probably 10-60% faster then a single drive.

Hope that helps someone, I have written that as generic as I can in the
hope that it will help more then one person.

2000-02-26 Thread Necrotica

Assuming you are using KDE do the following:

- Clean up and delete any driver-related files you have right now in your home
dir (except the tarball)
- Click on the home directory icon on your taskbar
- Right-click on the driver tarball file
- Select Archiver
- This will open Archiver. Click on the magnifying glass icon to extract. Don't
change any of the defaults, and hit OK
- The make files for the driver will now be in their own directory.
- Open a terminal icon and change into the newly created directory
- Type su to become root
- type make install (or whatever you need for your type of card)

That should do it. Have fun

If your modem is a "Winmodem" then it cannot be configured to use with
Linux. (not easily anyway). I also have an internal Winmodem and ended up
going back to my external 33.6K modem. Generally if you consult the "HowTo"
files here http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/INDEX.html you
should find the answers you require.

First, you must be certain...your modem is NOT a winmodem...or a PCI
modemthen, make sure you have linux seeing it on the right port.
try using all the com ports under linux...ie ttyS0,ttyS1, etc.
also try /dev/modem at the top...
what modem is it?

The most dificult part of this responce is reading thru the HTML. I use a
text-only mail reader, and I'd appreciate it if you would turn off the HTML
when sending to this list, it'll save me a headache or two.

If you are using kppp to connect to the internet, you can click the setup
button , then the Modem tab, then the Query modem button to make sure that you
are accessing the modem. You should get a window indicating the responces
from your modem which will include the modem name, firmware version, features,
etc. You must also set up your modem to dial your ISP - if you use AOL, there
may be a problem, but I'm not sure of that - and DNS info etc. If you do not
get the previously indicated information, you should make sure that kppp is
trying to use the ttys port (COM port) your modem is connected on.

If you are using a winmodem (most PCI modems are Winmodems), sorry you are out
of luck - they do not work with Linux as far as I know.

If you do not use KDE or the kppp utility, I can not be of much help since I
have been using kppp since I started using Mandrake - it's just so easy to set
up and I'm sooo lazy!

You're not giving us much info to go on. How are you trying to connect?
Using kppp, or some other modem connection device? Have you edited
/etc/resolv.conf ? You should add:
search
nameserver
nameserver

{yeah, your ISP shpuld provide you with 2 dns#'s}

[newbie] HELP ME PLEASE with Mandrake 6.0 and my Iomega Internal ATAPI Zip Drive

1999-06-16 Thread Anonymous

hello,

i would like to know how to get my zip drive working on my system.

here is a list of the things i have done:

- installed Mandrake6 on a fresh pentium pro 200mhz, 72 mb RAM, creative
labs infra 1800 cd-rom, soundblaster16 sound card, generic 33.6 modem from
old compaq computer, ctx 1451es monitor, generic 3 button serial mouse, at
keyboard with ps/2 adapter, fic6010 motherboard, iomega internal atapi zip
drive 100mb, 2.0gig samsung hard drive

- during the install i was able to see the kernel detect my zip drive as
"hdb": it is a slave to my hard drive

- i tried to find the drive in the kde device manager (i am not sure what it
is called, i just know that i could mount and unmount different drives and
file systems through mount and unmount buttons) that shows which drives are
mounted: did not see "hdb" or any other similar device (i was also looking
for sdb possibly on account of some vague information gathered from various
internet sites, deja.com, ldp, etc.)

- i tried recompiling my kernel as instructed in the linux documentation
project's HOWTO on the zip drive

- i also followed the external link to the linuxgazette tip offered in the
HOWTO: this tip said to recompile the kernel with scsi support rather than
with the ide-atapi-floppy support (i did this using "make xconfig" "make
dep" "make clean" "make zImage" "make modules" "make modules_install" "make
zlilo")

- after rebooting, i still saw the "hdb" recognized as the internal zip
drive, but no scsi device detection as the tip suggested

- i have recompiled the kernel about 10 times now trying to find the correct
options for the detection of the drive as a scsi device that i can mount and
eject disks from (the linuxgazzette tip suggested doing it this way so that
one could use some "eject" utility that would keep one from damaging the
drive due to improper unmounting)

- i have nothing important on the system as yet, and am willing to reinstall
if there is a way to do things from the installation

- i have not made a mount point yet due to the fact that i couldn't find the
drive anywhere

i will not be upset if i am told that the fix is relatively easy, i would
just like to use the programs i downloaded onto the disks i have.

many thanx,
michael
