Re: [newbie] hotmail like platform for linux?
try using ocs webmail or twig or squirrelmail. these are available free for the asking at www.screwdriver.net and at www.squirrelmail.org Enable imap in the /etc/inetd.conf file and reboot. You have your own web-based emai which can be accessed from anywhere provided you box is on and running. -- S.Ganesan Principal Scientist Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering Berasia Road Bhopal 462038, INDIA Phone: 0755-730986 (O) 0755-732105 (R) Fax:0755-734016 Email<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Web Address:http://www.ciae.nic.in Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] hotmail like platform for linux?
I use a free mail service called MyRealBox which is used as a beta site/demonstration site for Novell's NIMS (Novell Internet Mail Service) product. I have been using it with Evolution (via IMAP, it also supports SNMP) for quite some time. It can be reached at www.myrealbox.com. The web interface can be a little buggy at times (due to the fact that most of the time it is stress-testing beta code. They recently did a major upgrade which caused a few outages but it's been pretty reliable lately) but overall it works pretty good (I've never lost messages, but occasionally I have trouble connecting via the web interface. But then again, Hotmail is known for being down for days at a time!). And best of all it doesn't require a (explative deleted) HotMail account! Has anybody tried the GotMail program? I don't have a hotmail account so I can't test it. I do have a Yahoo account and access it through Pine every day. I looked into this about six months ago. I saw some source for Linux on Souceforge, it was a version 0.1. Microsoft purports that it's a legit mail protocol, yet they have never released any specs for it! Richie Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] hotmail like platform for linux?
For lack of a better explanation, what you're doing with Outlook Express and Hotmail is IMAP. You're viewing the remote folders and the information in it. It may not be IMAP they're actually running, but in a way, that's what they're doing. You can do as the other people who responeded suggest, or you could just learn to use a console based program. So you can ssh to your machine, and then run something like Mutt, Pine, or Elm and read and reply to your email. If you didn't have a problem with could install your own web based mail front on your machine. Provided your machine always has the same IP address, and is up 24/7. (For example: DSL or Cable connection.) But you could install Horde/IMP and just check and send mail remotely via the web interface. But you don't seem to like that idea. Check out www.horde.org/. But console mail readerse are still quite possible. tdh -- T. Holmes - UNIXTECHS.org [EMAIL PROTECTED] - "Real Men Use Vi!" Try yahoo. It is web based, but can be set up to act as a pop/smtp account. Just enter pop.mail.yahoo.com and smtp.mail.yahoo.com in the appropriate spots in your kmail (or better, sylpheed) mail program along with you account info an it works just fine. hotmail is not using pop3, but outlook express is setup to interface with their http setup.. so I use that occasionally too. yahoo offer free email accounts and you can access them using either web or true pop3.. I have fetchmail collecting my girlfriends mail from her yahoo account and delivering it to a local mailbox for her every 15 minutes... works great.. rgds frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Arthur H. Hotmail doesn't have pop or imap access? Wiggie. If they did you could access it that way. [newbie] hotmail like platform for linux?
Just curious, would anyone out there be interested in a web based email system that can be used with say Evolution or KMail or something. For example, I have a hotmail account which makes things really convient when travelling because you can always check email where ever you are. But I actually don't prefere to read and write from a web based email system. However, hotmail is integrated with Outlook Express so I can use my hotmail account just like my other SMTP/POP3 email accounts and this makes things quite nice. It would be nice if mandrake or ximian or whoever could provide a web based email accounts that are integrated in KMail or Evolution, I would dump my hotmail account and go for a mandrake or ximian account instead and then I could be one step closer to running linux 100% of the time.
