[newbie] Installing Mandrake on 9.1 on ppc

2005-02-13 Thread Lovell Mcilwain
Can anyone tell me the "successful" way install mandrake on a macintosh?
I can't do this to save my life and I can't tell what my problem is.
It seems my issue is with the install display which I don't have the
first clue how to fix. Even if I do the install via text-installer,
when I go to boot up my display is still all messed up.

Can anyone tell me a good way to fix this if there is such a way?
I am trying to install this on a bronze G3 Laptop. I have had the same
issue installing on my blue and white desktop as well.

Lovell

Two ways; copy the updates from the CD to the hard drive and add the directory
as a local source, or add the CD as a source and just keep updating it. If
the updates file gets so large that it won't fit on a single disk that could
become a problem.

You won't be using "Mandrake Update" in either case. If you use the rpmdrake
graphical interface just keep it set to show "all files by update
availability." Any new versions will be listed there. It's even easier from a
terminal, urpmi -a -c -f && urpmi --auto-select

Good luck;
Charlie

Agreed, in fact I believe I even suggested this a few posts back. Not to
continue the OT, but to further highlight the strength of Linux in general
and mandrake in particular, if you download the whole tree, one could also
make their own DVD iso with the MakeCD script found in the misc directory of
the dist tree.

I wasn't aware one could install from just the images located somewhere
on the drive, and I imagine that the installer is smart enough to
mount the ISO on a loop device if presented with an iso, but I never
tried that. I did a number of HD and ftp installs though, just not
recently.

Now, post-install, having the ISOs themselves available somewhere, and
loopback mounted, yes of course. That's how I got by without a CDRW and
only one available disk in the 9.x days ;) - just loopback mount the
other ISOs off of /mnt/cdrom somewhere, and then make urpmi point to
those mount points as sources.

Take a look at "install.html" in the iso file for CD 1. That file
contains instruction to install from hard drive and ftp.

You will have to mount the ISO file with:
/path/to/downloaded.iso /emptyfolder iso9660 loop

You can do various flavors of network installs, but all require another
machine to provide the files. You can install directly from the
internet using FTP servers, but as you have already downloaded the ISOs,
I presume you don't want to do that.

So, if you mean that you have two O/S's on your only machine and just
want to install Mandrake as a third, then no.

You seem like you know pretty much XFree86.

I want it to report to [EMAIL PROTECTED] but can't even get in my linux to

Can you give a advice to "fixe" the problem? Should I tried to do '$

Re: [newbie] Installing Mandrake Help

2004-01-25 Thread Josh Peters
Ok, here's what I have so far.
I installed mandrake 9.2 (my original cd was bad, had no problem with the
second copy)
When I boot the hd now, linux runs through the startup process, the monitor
seems to go through a test, flashing 3 times or so, and it asks for a
localhost login:

Mandrake Linux release 9.2 (FiveStar) for i586
Kernal 2.4.22-10mdk on an i686 / tty1
localhost login:

I type my username and password and get to a command line. I type startx
and it scrolls a couple of screens of settings or something. It gets to a
monitor sequence (svga, different resolutions, etc.) then stops, giving me
the following:

Fatal server error:
No valid modes found

when reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send the full
server output, not just the last messages.

X10: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0,0" after
0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

back to a command prompt.
I installed the recommended amount of items at the install, neither adding
or removing any it defaulted to.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Josh

If you have the space on your hard drive, you might consider making a
partition and copying the 3 install disks to that, then make a hd install
floppy, boot with that and install from there. That's the way I prefer to
install, now, because I never have to put the disks in the cd drive again.
You can only install with disk 1 in the drive, if you use the boot-from-cd or
boot from floppy, install from cd method. And, it sounds as though your boot
floppy may be faulty, because if an install fails, it will usually fail at
the copying files from cd-rom stage--not at the floppy boot stage. Did you
use the DOS utility on the first disk to make it? If the install fails at
the part where the cd is accessed, it could be a faulty cd (also indicated by
boot failure when the bios is set to boot from CD). Did you do an MD5
checksum on it? If the vid card uses shared memory, you may need to pass a
Mem=xxx option.
See, without more info, there could be a lot of different problems, any one of
which can be a show stopper, none of which are insurmountable. Give us more
info, and we'll try to help you get installed. This OS is way better
than Windows, and your system should run 9.2 just fine.

Hi Everyone.
I'm installing mandrake 9.2 on an ibm pentium 2, 450, 256 ram.
It wouldn't boot from the cd, so I made a floppy. I got a little further,
this error message:
syslinux 1.67 mandrake linux boot failed
I've tried using both disk 1 and 2 to boot from.
Anyone have any other tips?
BTW, I am very much a linux virgin, please excuse my idiocy.

Defrag your Win98 Hard Drive
(Do not tick the box to 'speed up access')

In your BIOS (usually accessed by hitting 'Del' during booting)
Configure BIOS to Boot from CD as first boot device

Reboot With Mandrake CD1 in the drive.

Follow the on screen instructions

Mandrake will resize your Win98 partition, create Linux partitions, install a
gazillion Applications, and set up your computer to dual boot Linux and
Windows.

It really is quite simple. A lot easier than installing Windows IMO

Make life easy on yourself. Follow John's "recipe" but instead of making
partitions after deleting that "last partition" on hdb and manually making
partitions you may not understand, use the auto allocate button and then
click done. You won't have to worry about swap size, the auto allocate built
into the installer will set an appropriate size for the hardware it found to
install on, and you should end with a /, /swap and /home partition built into
that 4.03 GB space. If I recall correctly.

Since at least 95% of the people that I've helped install Mandrake Linux for
the first time have reinstalled and claimed more disk space for it, and less
for Windows, it's usually only a temporary measure anyway. (-:

Re: [newbie] Installing Mandrake

2003-10-16 Thread John Richard Smith
JB,

OK then should be quite simple, and as a newbie you don't want to be
remaking everything and reinstalling everything including the windblows
OS's . So basically it's the size of the last partition on the second
drive that you have to play with, and it's only large enough to do an
ordinary install of the main Mandrake OS. I find on first install the
basic install results in 1.6gigs or there abouts, but with use that soon
becomes 2.4 to 2.6 gigs, don't ask me why I don't know why but if you
want most things to play with like kde, OO, the media stuff etc etc.
that's how it becomes. I think if I were you I would just keep to /
base and /swap partition. So when you rerun the Mandrake install when
you come to diskdrake you must select the last partition and unmake it
so it's not defined as anything and then create a / and a /swap
partition, and alow diskdrake to format and then proceed to install.

The next question is how big a swap partition should you make, and
unless you have megga memory the general rule is 1 1/2 to 2 times the
size of you physical memory.
Remember that the /swap partition is there to act as additional memory
storage, the system pages out certain things stored in memory and holds
them in the swap partition untill the memory stick is freed for it's
return. It's a way of making your memory perform as a bigger stick of
memory than it really is and in windblows it's called virtual memory but
instead of it being a defined partition, it's a file on the OS with
preset physical limits.

So go ahead and create your partitions and install your OS . Good luck.

John

What I'd do is trying to isolate the problem.

Do you have any PCMCIA card in? If so, take it out and try to boot
again.

Also, during boot time, you are asked if you want to go into debugging
mode (or something like that). When you select that mode, you decide
whether a driver, module or process is started or not. This way we will
know exactly what is the conflicting hardware, service or process.

appeared to be hung but if I gave it a miniute or so it would take off again.
This may not be the case with yours mine was old and slooow 133mhz but
it may be worth giving it a try.

Today I installed Mandrake 9.0 on a Toshiba laptop.
Or I tried to, anyway.

I simply used the standard install CD's (downloaded
from the Mandrake site). They booted just fine, and
the install ran without a hitch.

I did get one message telling me that some of my
hardware required proprietary drivers and referring me
to www.linmodems.com. I figured this message was
specifically about the modem, and since I don't plan
to be online with this computer I ignored it.

After installation, the system wouldn't boot up - it
always hung on "Starting pcmcia devices ..." or
something to that effect. Everything up to that
point, however, worked fine.

What have I done wrong? How can I fix it?

[newbie] Installing Mandrake 8.1 with hard drive on an ATA133 card

2002-09-11 Thread Martin Mitchell

Hi,

My computer currently only has windows, but I am trying to installing
Mandrake 8.1 on it. When I try and install it fails to detect my hard
drive. I believe this is because it is connected to a Highpoint Rocket
133 card. I have the linux drivers for this card but was not sure how to
get the installer to use them. In the readme for the drivers it says

4. Using the driver
-
  1) Load module "scsi_mod" and "sd_mod" if they are not built into
kernel:

# modprobe sd_mod

  2) Load the driver.

# insmod ./hpt302.o

Where would I type this, or did I need to do something different.

Thanks

You'll need a version compiled for the i486. The last
version which that was done to was 7.0-2. You can buy it on
cd from cheapbytes ($ 4.99 + shipping):

or download it in iso form from a mirror site (below is a

Hi Ka Wai TAM
I think you are out on a challange / maybe getting over your head on
this installation.

The machine (you have in mind) would not performe very well for MDK
8.x - Why don't you get the MDK 7.x - If you have a reconable "or
normal netcard" it will be detected.

Even if you would succeed in installing MDK 8 on this machine, the
performance would not give the user any good impression of the
system.

There are versions for i386 (and therefore 486's), though I don't know
if 8.2 is among them. Certainly earlier releases of Mandrake are
available. On this subject, while I appreciate the i586 optimsation, I
also think it's important to keep supporting i386. I know that in
Europe and North America you'd be hard-pressed to find a charity that
would accept your old 486, but here in the developing world we have the
weird situation where secretaries who do nothing but write letters in
Word 2000 which could have just as well been done in Notepad and write
the occasional e-mail get Pentium IV's, while most State schools, if
they have computers at all have 486's or worse. A Turkish LUG recently
had a campaign in which they'd go out to schools and install Linux on
whatever aging hardware they found (mainly 386 or 486's running Windows
3.1). OK, people who want to do this kind of thing have a lot of
alternatives, but I still think Mandrake is the best distribution for
this kind of thing (BrandLoyalty (TM)).

[newbie] Installing Mandrake 8.1 on 486 with 32Mb RAM

2002-06-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Mandrake 8.1 is supposed to be installable with 32Mb RAM, in text mode.

I have a 486, and upgraded its memory to 32Mb specifically so I could
install Mandrake. (The computer can't handle more than 32Mb.)

I boot from the floppy and install from the CD-ROM. It recognizes the
non-standard Sony CD-ROM 31a (thank you, thank you, Mandrake!), but then
it says: not enough RAM for RAMdisk! ("Installation exiting abnormally.")

Can anyone help me do a minimum text install for Mandrake in 32Mb RAM?

I have a 500Mb hard drive (will happily upgrade if need be).

I currently have RedHat Linux 5.1 installed, but I want to be able to use
Mandrake's hardware autodetection. Specifically, I want it to detect the
Ethernet card; right now my Linux box isn't hooked up to the Internet.

How much RAM do you have in this machine and is it known to be good? The
only thing I can think of preventing Linux from creating and mounting a ram
disk is either lack of free ram (try installing via a text install, rather
than graphical) or bad ram (only option is to buy some decent ram).

You CDROM is known to be good isn't it?

[newbie] Installing Mandrake on Apple G3..please help!

2001-08-31 Thread Kalarness, Bill

Hi,

I'm attempting to install ML 8.0RC1-1ppc to an Apple B/W G3 minitower. This
system has two scsi hard drives, where one is the original drive from apple
(IBM 9.1Gb Deskstar scsi-2) and the other I added (IBM 18.2Gb Ultrastar
scsi-2).

I'm booting the Mandrake installer from a CD... and all is well until the
wizard reaches the point of selecting a drive/identifying a partition. It
returns an error about not finding a recognized drive.

I'd like to install onto the original drive (9Gb disk) and already have half
the drive available for Linux. So, how do I make my drive recognizable to
the installation wizard?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!!!

TIA,

-=Bill

[newbie] Installing Mandrake 7.2 with Window$ 2000

2001-01-23 Thread John Catral

Hello! I recently tried to install Mandrake 7.2 on my
computer that has windows 2000 on it also. Before
anything, I want to describe the setup I have.

I have 2 hardrives. The primary drive has windows
2000 on it and the second drive is for Mandrake.
Anyway, I installed Mandrake on the second drive and
everything seems fine UNTIL I was done with the
mandrake install and I had to reboot. When the
computer rebooted, I was hoping to see LILO or Grub
but instead I saw a "NTLDR Not found" error. I know
in the past that I was able to install with no
problems. I would usually get LILO and when I chose
Windoze I would get the Windoze 2000 boot menu. This
time I didnt get anything. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

RE: [newbie] Installing Mandrake 7.2 from ISO image

2001-01-09 Thread Charles A Edwards

If you are using Nero 5.03,
   Launch Nero
Close the New Comp window leaving only the main window open
From the drop down File Menu select Burn Image
In the Explorer window that opens, in the section listed as Files of Type
select All Files, then nav to the folder to which you downloaded the ISOs
and select 1.
A Foreign image setting box will open accept the values listed by
clicking OK
A Write CD window will open. Unless you are familiar with your recorder
check the 4 boxes
Determine Max Speed, Simulation, Write, and Finalize CD and then in the top
right of the window click the write button.
Follow the same to burn the second ISO

If you are using an earlier version of Nero you will first need to rename
the files from .iso to .nrg because .nrg will be the only listing under
Files of type.
Aside from that the steps are the same.

I kind of figured that's what was happening. I'm using Nero burning-rom
software. There is not much documentation that came with this software. I
tried to find a setting for burning raw data, and as far as I know, there
isn't one. Anyone familiar with Nero?

What did you tell the burn program? If you told it to make an iso file from
the (already iso) download, then your CD is either a coaster or a frisbee.

Generally you should just copy the image to the CD.

as error messages goes this is amongst the more helpful types:-)
did you check the md5sum of the iso file before burning?

did you verify the cd after burning
at whatc point in the install does the error message appear? - straight away,
when you specify the cd drive?
if you press alt f3 or alt f4 (also f5) are there any messages onscreen that
refer to cd drives or devices e.g. /dev/hdd or similar

do you have more than one cd drive?

RE: [newbie] Installing Mandrake 7.2

2000-12-12 Thread Mark Lee

"I don't want to get off on a rant here but ..." I really have an issue with
some of the board manufacturers that put on-board video on their MBs. Yes,
it keeps the costs down but it's a pain when you come to add another
(better) card. Thorsten, I feel your pain. I had a similar issue with an SiS
530 chipset about 18 months ago. Win95 (and to a lesser extent 98) had real
issues with it.

The problem is that some of these boards don't give you a way to turn off
the on-board video, either by use of jumpers or in the BIOS itself. My
suggestion would be 1. Check in the motherboard manual to see if there are
any jumper settings to disable the onboard video (many manufacturers have
the manuals on-line if you can't find it). 2.Make sure you are running the
latest version of the BIOS software and check to see if it gives you the
option to disable on-board video. 3. If the SiS video is AGP, you could try
changing the startup order for video in the BIOS from AGP to PCI.

My old 530 board only allowed me to change the startup order (which didn't
solve my problem), so I wound up dumping it and buying an Asus. It IS
possible for the 2 devices to function together as you have said, but the
system will be VERY unstable and resource conflicts will cause lock-ups and
crashes.

You might also want to see if the manufacturer has an FAQ site to post your
question. I can't believe it's the first time it's been asked and you may
find the answer you need right away.

Regards,

Mark Lee

I installed the system (by automatic install) and everything seemed to work.
The first thing I noticed was that the Harddisk is running without UDMA33. I
know that the chipset supports UDMA because when I ran windows95 on this
computer it was possible. I foend out that the Mandrake installed a driver
for the SIS5513 chipset. I dont know what to do now. I tried to find out if
the SIS5582 chipset is supported, but I failed (maybe because its not
supported). The other thing is that Mandrake uses the SIS5582 as a
graphic-board. It installed the ATI board correctly but it shows me two

an running application is terminated or the whole KDE is shut down. What can
I do to correct these mistakes?
It's the latest Mandrake Distribution 7.2 (kernel 2.2.17) with XFree 3.3.6

The problem seems to be your cdrom drive. Most likely it is either
just incompatible, or has some problems. If there are any hardware
problems with a system, Linux will find them. Prob all that you need
to do is swap out the cdrom drive with the one you already installed
Madrake to and it should go ok.

[newbie] Installing Mandrake 7.0 errors

2000-04-14 Thread Iain Scurrah

Hello Gurus,

I have successfully installed the OS onto one machine here at work. I am now
trying to do the same for a second machine.

After booting from floppy I press Return to start booting the install, it gets
as far as a blue Message box that says Initializing CDROM then I get ...

in second stage install
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
Fri Apr 14 10:54:46 2000 Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0 at
/usr/bin/perl-install/my_gtk.pm line 139.
install exited abnormally
sending termination signals...done
sending kill signals...done
unmounting filesystems...
 /tmp/rhimage
 /proc
you may safely reboot your system

I have tried to booting from both CD and Floppy, removing the SCSI devices,
using two alternate video cards (including one from the working machine) and
removing the mouse (it was the last thing detected on virtual session 3)

Can I install using the command line only ? or using a character based script
rather than the X windows one that appears to be failing ?

Can I get at the log files that are mentioned on screen 3 (* extra log messages
are enabled) ?

If you have any ideas, then I'd appreciate them...

Iain.

I start with a startdisk and choose "expert".

Then I can pass every part of the configuartion without a problem.

Then normally I have to choose the X-Server. But at this point I get an error.
It tells me that an error occured and if I want to retry or go to the menu. In
the menu I can choose which part of the installation I will do next. But there
is only the X-Configuration. So I can't skip this part and if I retry I get the

[newbie] Installing Mandrake 6.1

1999-10-04 Thread Helmut Halfmann

Hey!
Installing Mandrake 6.1 I have a problem...
Using the startdisk from the cd I can't configure the X-Server. I can't skip
this point and so the only thing I can do is reset the computer. But then I
can't start the computer. So ... I can't install Mandrake 6.1.

I don't know where I can find my mistake.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks...

Helmut

Here Phil, the easiest way would be to get a program called Partition Magic
4.0. By the sound of it, you would have to format the drive and start over
again. With Partition Magic you don't have to, plus they include a handy
wizard
to setup a Linux partition(s).

No, there is only one for win98 FAT, but it is set for the full 4 megs space.
Could this be the problem? Do I have to reduce the amount of space alloted to
win98?

Left over from installing Win98? Maybe that is the problem. You may
have to delete them (but not the one where your win98 resides).

I can tell you 'why' it happens, but not 'how' to solve it. My guess is since
the CDROM image is saved on a FAT partiton, that partition needs to be mounted
before Linux will see it. To mount a FAT partition type this at a prompt:

mount -t vfat /dev/hdax /mnt/x

Change the 'hdax' to what partiton no. it is, and /mnt/x is a directory you need
to create. If you use Windows a lot, make /mnt/d for your D: partition and so
on.

Ok, just recieved my Mandrake 6.0 CD from LinuxMall and read the README.
Can I or can I not install Mandrake 6.0 on my 486 off this CD? The
prerequisite info on the LinuMall site says yes but the CD README says you
can only install it on Pentium class computers and a download/cheap CD
will be available soon for 486 computers.

I searched all over the Mandrake site and there is no mention of a 486 CPU
specific download or CD.

HELP!

I have a feeling this problem is actually with your .xinitrc and .xsession
files in your home directory. The important part of those error messages is

xinit: No such process - whatever program you were trying to run can't
connect to the X server, not because it's refused a connection, but because
it's failed to start up properly. Both my .xinitrc and .xsession files
simply contain the following:

/opt/kde/bin/kde (at least I think they do; I'm not using linux at the
moment)

Good luck,

Owen

As a workaround try:

edit /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config and change (or comment out these lines):

DisplayManager._0.authorize:true
DisplayManager._1.authorize:true

to:
DisplayManager._0.authorize:false
DisplayManager._1.authorize:false

[newbie] Installing Mandrake Upgrades

1999-05-13 Thread michael . thorp

I am hoping that someone will be able to help me with some tech support on upgrading
to kernel 2.2.7 and mandrake 6.

I was logged in and installing the new rpms that are out at rufus.w3.org and hit a
glitch in KDE. I was thrown back to the login screen and when I tried to restart KDE,
I received an error and it wouldn't start for me. I logged in as root and KDE starts
just fine. I was installing the KDE upgrade packages at the time after having
successfully upgraded the kernel and X11 packages.

The exact error message is as follows:

Authentication failed
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
giving up.
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error

This looks like a problem with the pam modules, but I have upgraded them with no luck.
When I use the root login, startx works just fine, but when I use my login, I get the
above error.

Please help if you can. Thanks

Hmmm... I've never had such a problem, but I think it is a problem
with the mouse configuration. Probably you are using a 2 button mouse with
a 3 button protocol or viceversa.

Have you tried the sndconfig program?

To mount the floppy:

mount -t FS /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

where FS is ext2 or fat (I suppose), depending on the filesystem you have
on the floppy disk. Of course you have to be root to do that.
If you want to be able to mount the disk as a normal user, you
have to add the following line to your /etc/fstab:

/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppyautosync,user,noauto,nosuid,nodev,unhide,rw 0 0

In my computer it seems to work perfectly, recognizing the filesystem you
have on the disk. Then, to mount the disk, you only have to digit:

mount /mnt/floppy

For the cdrom it is just the same. Add the following line in /etc/fstab:

/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdromauto user,noauto,nosuid,exec,nodev,ro 0 0

and then give the command:

mount /mnt/cdrom

If you use msdos floppies, probably the best thing for you is to
use the mtools: mcopy, mdir, etc

If you experience problems with auto configuration of filesystems,
let me know. ;-)

This solved the problem somehow. I am yet to configure some stuff (
ie sound and mounting the CD-ROM and Floppy) and the task bar which
moves from time to time ( it hides itself automatically and it comes
back when it is not invited ). How do I sort this out.

Hi Mauro,

You're a star. I've tried all the suggestions that you've sent to me
and all of them work just fine.
I can get many colors and no longer have the darkish background. Also
no problems with the refresh rate and the resolution. I went as far as
1280x1024 and no complains whatsoever. KDE is cool I just don't like
the idea of too many icons on my desktop.
However there seems to be a small problem wit the task bar, it slides
all the time ( form left to right and viceversa), I had some fun with
it but now it is a bit annoying. How do I fix this?
I shall probably submit something on the configuration of the sound,
but I am yet to try by myself and see whether I can get the beast to
work. I get absolutely no sound from any audio CD. I am reading the
notes and will see what to do. By the way how do I mount the floppy
driver and the CD-ROM?

Thanks for you dedicated patience.

All the best to you.

First it sounds like you are selecting and setting up for the lowest
resolution and screen size. In xf86config at the selection where it
asks you if you want the default resolution or to select your own, you
need to select your own.

In there it will ask you if you want to select the screen resolution
for each. Where the default selections most likely will be 2345 up
untill you get to 1256x1024 or so. What you want to do is either
reverse the selection and make it like 5432 or select the one screen
size that you want for each of the selctions and select that one
screen size. Try that and see what happens.
I hope I explained it well enough...without actually looking at
xf86config, its kinda hard sometimes to explain from memory.

Also, I think someone else has posted about using a device setting for
your card that might help.

Sounds like you have a might have a problem with either an irq
conflict or you are selecting the wrong comport when you select the
port for your mouse. Check the irq's for your ports 1 - 4 . And
make sure in xf86config that you are assigning the correct port for
your mouse. Also double check that you are selecting the correct
video card in xf86config.

Re: [newbie] Installing Mandrake 5.3

1999-02-27 Thread Bernardo Rodrigues

Hi All,

Thanks for the help with the installation of Mandrake 5.3. The
installation went smooth and nicely, the only trouble at the moment is
to configure the Xwindows. I am having a 15" Tatung monitor with max
res 1024*768 and a refresh rate in the range of 50-70 Hz and a max
24 bit of color depth. My video card is a SiS 6326 pro AGP.
I've tried xf86config and XFConfigurator, but with no success so far.
All I get is a dark background with Kde, and the mouse pointer stays
flickering on the top right corner of the screen . I have no idea of
what to do as to bring it in a sort of taskbar ( excuse the windows
terminology) in the bottom of the screen.

Any pointers to a solution are welcome.

Thanks in advance

Bernardo

Hi there,

I've got a burnt CD of Mandrake 5.3 and I am going to install the
software as soon as I get home. I've been reading the installation
procedures but need some more information.
I've gote two IDE HDD one of which I defined as primary master (here
is where I want to put Man 5.3 and Lilo) and a secondary master (here
I've got the Win stuff, do not blame me all belongs to my better half)
.

Question 1: How I am supposed to install Man 5.3 using the CD, chances
are that I'll go to Win first and certainly from there I cannot read
my primary HDD. How do I do this?
Question 2 : I've got RH 5.2 running in the 1st HDD, with the dual
booting options working fine, but I still prefer to have Mandrake
5.3, should I uninstall RH 5.2 first or just perform an Installation
of Mandrake on top of RH 5.2 and then do the Lilo configuration and
the other steps?
Question3 : If question 2 has a positive answer how do I uninstall RH
5.2?

In the hope of some light.
Thanks

Bernardo

Hi
I an a Linux noobie -
I have Mandrake 5.3 installed as well as Windoze 95 =
why dont you make the current Primary master your slave(ie:change the
jumper settings on both HDD's ) and the current Secondary Master to the
primary master
i know from repeated installs of win95 that it prefers to be installed on
the primary HDD.
then boot up into win - go into the CDrom (put the madrake cd in first)
have 3 Blank/formatted 1.44 floppies ready
look in the dosutils dir and double click on RAWRITE
then i will ask for the path of hte images d:\images\boot.img (where d is
the letter of your CD)
and basically follow the instructions
make the boot.img the Supp.img and the Rescue.img disks
insert the Boot.img disk and reboot your machine - and then follow the
install prompts
pretty easy (umm and my best guess - i dont know too much - but if you are
not using anything in particular in the current Redhat Install then NUKE it
get rid of it and install from a clean HDD
also DOS Fdisk has an interesting and totally undocumented feature FDISK
/MBR
that will over-write your Master Boot Record (where you probably have got
lilo installed) and replace it with a DOS/Win95 MBR.
that way you get rid of LILO too :)
hope this helps
