I just had this problem and fixed it buy un-ticking an option in kppp
setup.

I had kppp configured with the correct DNS addresses for the
nameservers of the ISP's I use.

Every time I established a connection via kppp none of the "internet
aware" desktop applications would work. Netscape, the KDE file manger
or kmail etc.

It turns out there is a tick box on the kppp setup screen that is to
do with hostnames, down the bottom left of one of the screens. Can't
remember what it is called exactly as I am at work on Windows at the
moment.

Anyway if it is set, try un-ticking the box. With it ticked I think
your pc assumes the name of the ISP (or something like that) which
means it is talking to itself and does not work.

I have exactly the same problem. If I access the Internet using KPPP , I
subsequently cannot activate any programme on my desktop or elswhere. I cannot
even activate my browser (Netscape 4.73). In order to use the browser, I have to
activate it before I activate KPPP.

AndrewI believe that I've heard of this happening when
someone's chosen one of the higher security levels. The
system senses a new user when the phone connection is made
(the ip address of ppp0 changes to whatever the isp assigned)
and therefore does not allow any of the normally accessable
programs to be launched. When the connection goes away, then
all becomes normal again. So I believe that possibly
re-setting the system security level might solve your
problem. Anyway, I hope this leads you in a positive
direction towards solving your problem.

 Thanks Altoine,
however I think maybe I did not explain myself fully the first time.
Netscape was only an example. What happens is nothing opens. I click on say
my home directory and nothing happens. I click on the console and nothing
happens. When I go to the menu and choose anything, say a game, nothing
happens, yet using the /sbin/ifup command everything is fine.

It is not only netscape it is the whole desktop that doesn't respond when
connecting with kppp. I've checked my DNS IP configuration and all is fine.

[newbie] kppp wierdness]

2000-05-28 Thread Altoine Barker

Yo Andrew,

Your problem may not be a "kppp" problem at all. If you can use other
networking protocols, the problem can be one of or both of two things. DNS IP
configuration incorrect and something is wrong with your browser. In my
opinion, I believe it to be your browser alone. If you cant FTP to a site
using the site name such as:

ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/I-WANT-THIS/doc

the problem is not with your DNS as FTP has just demonstrated that it is
working fine. The problem is in your upgrade of Netscape. What I found the
problem to be is this; Your Netscape RPM and upgraded Netscape tarball are not
on the same wave length. What I mean is this. Your "old" netscape RPM has a
file that your Netscape icons link to that uses a "app-default" file to point
it to it's resources. I found the "apps-default directory after I had
uninstalled the "old" Netscape RPM using Kpackage and then reinstalled
Netscape using the Netscape tarball. The only problem with this method is that
you are forced to make changes to your icons that point to netscape in their
properties.

I loaded my Netscape tarball to /opt/netscape.
Which means that in the properties I had to point the icon to ;
/opt/netscape/netscape

This solved all of my Netscape woes and allowed me to be able to properly
download and run plugins correctly like Shockwave, xanim, and the such.

Try this. if it doesn't work for you whch I doubt that you'll have a problem,
just reinstall the "old" netscape from your distro.

What I have heard is if you aren't able to open anything else up then you do
not have the correct DNS numbers in there.

Sorry Jerry no help from me I'm afraid. Just writing to add another weirdness.
Whenever I connect using kppp I cannot open anything else. Netscape, Kmail
infact everything ends up as dead icons, nothing responds.
However if I run /sbin/ifup ppp0 before starting X I can use the desktop as
normal and that is what I am having to do. Weird huh

[newbie] kppp wierdness

2000-05-26 Thread Papa

Okay gang, I have some wierdness here with my kppp connection. I can IRC and
FTP and most anything else but when I try to http (using Netscape 4.72) it craps
out about 95% of the time.

I have used the same settings for my ISP forever both on Windows and previous LM
installs. I am currently using LM 6.1. I also have a freewwweb account that
works about 90% of the time for web surfing.

The modem is a Zoom 28.8, I get a good connection (read no disconnects). One
thing I have noticed when I cannot reach the web I also cannot Ping my ISPs
Primary DNS server, I can Ping the Secondary with times of 220 ms. I attribute
the lag to the 28.8 connection speed.

Any ideas, thoughts or suggestions let me know. Thanks.

Jerry
