linuxconf is in the contrib folder of any mandrake mirror.
The reason it is hidden away in contrib is because it is not recommended for
use in Mandrake anymore. It is a RedHat tool. The reason why it is not
recommended was discussed recently (on the expert list I think) check the
archives for details.

If you want to configure your external modem just run the wizard in Mandrake
control Centre>Networking
and then to dial run kppp (assuming you have kdenetwork-kppp installed)

Go to the plf site http://plf.zarb.org/ and use easy-urpmi to set up a
"contrib" source (and a plf one while you're there:)).
That's where you'll find the linuxconf rpms and lots more to boot:)

Good luck,

[newbie] Linuxconf... where is it?

2003-12-10 Thread Eric Geater 11/26/03
Hello, all!

I have Mandrake 9.2. It's up and running, works very well, relatively
few problems. However, I have been instructed to use Linuxconf to
configure my external modem for dialing out. I type it in as root, but
"no package named linuxconf" appears. I then do "urpmi -y linuxconf",
but it also declares it an unknown package. I just got through with
139mb of updates from mirror.secsup.org and did my updatedb, but STILL
no knowledge about linuxconf. And everything I read on Google says it
should already be part of a working package in Linux.

Care to enlighten a newbie? I really need to know if linuxconf is
necessary for working on a modem, or whatever else I'd ever need it for,
and also how to get it if I can't RPM it.

Thanks!

Eric

Hi Bob

This one keeps coming up. Go to rpmfind.net and search on libgd. You
will get
a list of alternative packages, including libgd-1.3-4.i386.rpm. Download
that and you should be OK. Worked for me. Libgd is Tom Boutell's library

[newbie] Linuxconf in DrakConf does nothing

2000-12-13 Thread Eric Hall

Hey, y'all...new to Linux and this list, but not to computing. Quick
question: regardless of the user I'm logged in as (root, for instance),
clicking Linuxconf in DrakConf greys it out for a split second before
returning to it's normal state. All the other options in DrakConf work just
fine... Running linuxconf/userconf at the command line works fine (though
it's pretty clumsy). I'd much rather use the GUI tools from what I've been
surprised to find is a great GUI desktop (KDE--system was installed from the
"Server" packages, which I customized a little).

Any help would be much appreciated.

I am running Mandrake 7.2. From KDE, I keep trying to launch Linuxconf from
the Drakconf window, but when I click on it, I hear the hard drives spin up,
the icon goes gray for a second, but comes back, and nothing happens. I have

does nothing.

Can anyone recommend some more courses of action to fix this problem?

[newbie] linuxconf gui

2000-08-10 Thread Rick Welty

I have installed mdk7.1 on a 233MMX, 128mb, 15gb
Intel platform. KDE works great. Got a home network, access router, cable modem,
works pretty darn well, easy to set up, Webmin works from G4mac and
WIN98 machines on the local net. Even though I've never messed with Linux
before this, I thought it was pretty easy and straightforward, with a lot of
info learned from reading everyone's messages here.

One minor irritation:

Whenever I run linuxconf, it comes up in a window
as a sort of menu-driven text interface. Does anyone know how to allow/it/force
it to run in the cool-looking gui featured in all the screen shots on the
Mandrake Web site?

In linuxconf, under "features" I have enabled the
gui, and I have tried the command line "linuxconf --gui" without any
success.

Any advice would be greatly
appreciated.

[newbie] LinuxConf & Sendmail.cf

2000-08-07 Thread Joseph Lee Pereira

Unfortunately I need to use linuxconf to generate a sendmail.cf file.

Linuxconf points to /usr/lib/linuxconf/mailconf to get the info to
generate it's sendmail.cf file. Problem is those old files generate a
8.8.7 sendmail.cf file. I have Sendmail 8.10.1; I need to have
linuxconf use the correct 8.10.1 files. How do I do this? What files
do I use from Sendmail 8.10.1? Where do I place those files?

I know this a very basic question, so I appreciate any and all advice
I can get. I'm very new to Linux, so I appreciate your patience in
replying to my request for help. Thank you in advance!!

[newbie] linuxconf error: no user "uucp" defined

2000-07-14 Thread Keith Robinson

whenever I run linuxconf or netconf I get an error on exit:

No user "uucp" defined on this system in file
/usr/lib/linuxconf/redhat/perm/uucp

my file /usr/lib/linuxconf/redhat/perm/uucp reads:
/var/spool/uucp uucprootd 755
/usr/sbin/uucicouucpuucpf 6555

since I don't use uucp I commented out these two lines. But i still get the
same message from linuxconf/netconf.

my /etc/passwd file does not have a uucp user defined, nor can i think of why
I'd want one. i do have a uucp alias defined in my alias file as well as in
/etc/group.

can anyone please suggest what to do about this error message?

many thanks...

Hello,

I updated (clean install) from 7.0-2 to 7.1.

I am unable to get Linuxconf to respond to port 98. I had no such
problems with 7.0-2. If I scan ports from another machine on my LAN,
there is to response to port 98.

I sort of stumped - I have net access enabled (at least the check box)
but no go.

I do have appache running with name based virtual domains at the same IP
address (192.168.0.200). I tried moving it to another IP address with no
change. I don't seem to be having any other access problems, telnet, FTP,
SAMBA, appache... all work fine.

Thoughts?

[newbie] Linuxconf question

2000-04-03 Thread Biltz, James

I'm running Linux-Mandrake 7.02 and I want to give a few other users in my
department the ability to create and modify user accounts, but I don't want
them logging in as root.
I've tried giving them access to Linuxconf I their user accounts, but they
still get 'permission denied' errors when they try to run it. I experimented
with giving one of them super-user access, but no luck. I'm using the User
Accounts module in Linuxconf to modify their permissions.
I even tried using chmod to give them access to the Linuxconf files, but all
that managed to do was change the error message to 'segmentation fault.' I
used DrakConf to set the security settings to high when I installed the OS,
but I tried switching to medium and low settings with the same results. Is
there some other setting I need to modify? (Sorry if this has been covered
here before, I'm pretty new to Linux and this list).
Thanks,

[newbie] Linuxconf 1.15 and firewalling

1999-08-04 Thread Jo

Please help me before I go mad!

I'm trying to set up a firewall using Mandrake 6.0 (Venus). I can reach
the internet when I'm working on the firewall. The IP has been obtained
through DHCP.
I started linuxconf and enabled Linuxconf network access for a machine
with IP 10.0.0.2. The internal card of the firewall has address
10.0.0.1.
This works fine and gives me the advantage I don't have to run from one
computer to the other for testing.

Then I went into Control files and systems, Configure Linuxconf modules
and added firewall rules configuration. default init runlevel
configuration and motd - Message Of The Day configuration are the only
other checked items.

Through the Control panel I restarted linuxconf.

Then I started configuring Routing and gateways. Under Set Defaults I
enabled Routing. I don't know what to fill in for the default gateway
though. On the client machine I would enter 10.0.0.1, but this is the
firewall. I tried with my external IP-address to no avail. I also
changed the last byte to 0 and to 255. Then I tried with 127.0.0.1 and
with leaving the field empty. Always activating the configuration and
seeing if I could ping out.

This was after I enabled forwarding rules in Firewalling defaults
(packet filtering). The rule I set was:
Forward firewalling

This rule is active: checked
Rule's policy: Accept
Do masquerading: checked
Protocol: all
>From
Host or Network: 10.0.0.0
Net mask: 255.255.255.0
Port range: empty
Other ports: empty
Interface: Any

To
Host or Network: 0.0.0.0
Net mask: again I don't know what to fill in here, so I tried with
nothing, class A, class B and Class C net masks
Port range: empty
Other ports: empty
Interface: any

The only firewall rules that are active are the forwarding rules.

>From the internal workstation I can ping myself: 10.0.0.2, the firewall
10.0.0.1 and the outside card on the address administered by the DHCP
server. I can't ping the name servers nor any other host on the subnet.

Does anybody have a clue why I can't seem to get this to work.

Many thanks in advance,

Jo

It says my Jaz drive isn't a valid block device (it was under
festen).

And it (repeatedly) wants to change file
permissions:

owner of /spool/mqueue to root:mail
permissions of /usr/sbin/pppd from 104755 to
100755
owner of /var/spool/mqueue to root:root
permissions of /usr/sbin/pppd from 100755 to 104755

Very strange...
