Any mount entry in the /etc/fstab file, can be automatically mounted, by
calling mount to the mount point.

Ie, you have a nfs mount set up, that isn't currently mounted. Call the
mount point "mount /mnt/nfs_mount" and it will mount. Provided it is in the
fstab file.

What is on the CD that you're trying to mount? This is, for instance, the
message you would get if you tried to mount a music CD (since music CDs don't
contain a filesystem).

[newbie] mounting cdrom problems

2000-12-14 Thread Emidio Gabrielli

Dear Sir/Madame,

I installed the last version of Linux mandrake, but I have problems in
mounting my cdrom, model: hp cd-writer 9100 series

In particular, I have the following problem when I mount it

mount /mnt/cdrom

mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom,
or too many mounted file systems

The first line is OK, and the error is reported in the second line.

My fstab file contains the following stuff
--
/dev/hda8 / ext2 defaults 1 1
/dev/hda7 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/fd0/mnt/floppy auto user,auto,nosuid 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user,rw 0 0
/dev/zip/mnt/zipauto noauto,user,rw 0 0

none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0
--

Could you please explain me how to solve this problem ?

I thank you in advance.

Yours faithfully,
 Emidio Gabrielli

I think you could make a softlink to your CDROM directory from
/ftp/pub. That way it is like a subdir in /ftp/pub.

You will have to make the CD world-readable (or so I heard).

mount /mnt/cdrom

must work with Mandrake. (easy, no? :-) )

What file systems does the kernel support at present?
mount /cdrom (if you have it setup this way) should work
just fine.

if you use Linux-Mandrake 5.1, you certainly have to do as follow:

cd /lib/modules
ln -s 2.0.35-2 2.0.35
/sbin/depmod -a
