well, i never tried to do it, but you could launch mplayer with
the command that xmms was using. ( soundwrapper )

"soundwrapper" is some sort of a "pipe" that an application not built
for aRTS uses in order to use it ( and therefore not get the 'soundcard
busy' error )

to get xmms working without aRTS, simply remove the "soundwrapper" part.
launch it by calling old plain xmms.

I am using kde 3.
with disbling sound server I could get sound with mplayer.
But xmms works with soundwrapper and it could show and give audio output for
.mpg files with server on. but mplayer same trick didn't work. Any

.. actually there can be a lot of possibilities, that message
says the soundcard is busy, nothing more..

do you have any other sound-intensive programs open? ( xmms, etc )
are you using KDE and have aRTS enabled?
does any movie file play correctly?

my guess would be the second one, maybe? if it is, try going
into KDE control panel, to the "sound" section, in there
you will see a "sound server" options page. turn the soundserver
off, then try again.

if you are not using KDE, then i'm sorry but this may be beyond
my reach...

Re: [newbie] MPlayer error

What to do for sound?
When I first tried to play
mplayer /mnt/wind/LailaOhLaila.avi
AO: [oss] 44100Hz Stereo Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian)
ao2: 44100 Hz 2 chans Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian)
Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy -> no sound
couldn't open/init audio device -> NOSOUND
Audio: no sound!!!
I just repeated the command
AO: [oss] 44100Hz Stereo Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian)
ao2: 44100 Hz 2 chans Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian)
audio_setup: sample format: Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian) (requested: Signed
16-bit (Little-Endian))
audio_setup: using 2 channels (requested: 2)
audio_setup: using 44100 Hz samplerate (requested: 44100)
audio_setup: frags: 4/4 (16384 bytes/frag) free: 65536

Further opening of other files also gave error of
Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy -> no sound
couldn't open/init audio device -> NOSOUND
What can be the reason for this behaviour?

Looks more like mplayer does not know how to play the sound track in the
movie... nothing to do with your sound system, just the file format you are
playing. Try a mpeg file or something... it should work.

it's not a configuration error, it's a GUI bug, i'm sorry,
i know many of you like to use the GUI, but there's nothing
to do until the MPlayer developers decide to fix the sourcecode
for their skin system. that problem is very widely known
( BTW, is that mpg in a FAT32 partition? if so, try
opening from a different filesystem tipe ) and it's supposed
to be fixed in a soon-coming new version.

as of now, the GUI is only usable if you opened the file from
a command, which means you have to configure a file association
between movie files and Mplayer in your favourite file browser,
and then navigate up to the file and click on it.
opening gmplayer and going to file -> open doesn't work.

about the sound, try a different sound driver. which parameters
are you using to call mplayer? or do you use none?
if you know what driver your soundcard is using ( OSS or ALSA )
try passing them as parameters for audio-output:

gmplayer -ao oss file.mpg

or

gmplayer -ao alsa file.mpg

if you are not sure, your best bet ( and this is what i use )
is SDL layer.

gmplayer -ao sdl file.mpg

this one will probably fix a lot of problems for you.
( i even use SDL for video output) .

my tipical mplayer command is like this:

mplayer -vo sdl -ao sdl file.mpg

of couse i don't type that every time, i made an alias
for it ;oP

To be honest, I don't remember. I believe I got the mplayer rpm
before GC recompiled it (?) for libpng3. Cooker has been in the
process of recompiling eveything that uses libpng2 -> libpng3.
I just did an
~ $ rpm -qpil /stor/dl81/mplayer-0.50-2mdk.src.rpm and it doesn't say
anything for 'requires'

I use mplayer from the CL, so libpng probly isn't too much of an
issue. Since it's a stand alone app, if you install with --nodeps and
it breaks, you can always rpm -e it. Try --rebuild 'n the scr.rpm

don't know why I even asked. All were on the cds except libpng3 I
installed libpng3 and it seems fine. Its not an upgrade from libpng2 both
are installed.

Go ro rpmfind.net , and enter one (or a few) of those files in. I think it'll
find an rpm that has all of them lumped together, maybe two different rpm's.

gcc3 is not ready for prime time. Mandrake's 2.96 is much better,
better than 2.95. BUT, in my experience, compiling from src, mplayer

Yes I had the same error. If you read the documentation on the mplayer site
it specifically mentions this error.

"Q:
Great, I have gcc 3.0.1 from RedHat/Mandrake, then I'm fine--!
A:
No, since there have been/are issues with those compilers.
Use 2.95.x series for reliability (not 2.96).
Use the latest gcc 3.0.x (starting at 3.0.2) if you want to use a 3.0.x
version.

Q:
I tried to compile MPlayer, but I got this output:

Upgrade your glibc to the newest. On Mandrake, use 2.2.4-8mdk ."

*

The trouble is persuading gcc3.01 to install with glibc2.2.4-8

Other people have reported that ignoring all their warnings and compiling
with gcc2.96 works just fine anyway.

[newbie] mplayer error

2001-11-25 Thread skidley

I am trying to compile mplayer on mdk 8.1, I'm using gcc-3.0-3.0.2-1mdk
from the cooker. I get this error when compiling:

Dec.o DS_AudioDec.cpp
In file included from /usr/include/g++-v3/bits/std_cwchar.h:43,
 from /usr/include/g++-v3/bits/fpos.h:40,

 from allocator.h:8,
 from outputpin.h:8,
 from DS_Filter.h:6,
 from DS_AudioDecoder.h:5,
 from DS_AudioDec.cpp:5:
/usr/include/wchar.h: In function `long long int wcstoq(const wchar_t*,
   wchar_t**, int)':
/usr/include/wchar.h:514: cannot convert `const wchar_t* __restrict' to `const

/usr/include/wchar.h: In function `long long unsigned int wcstouq(const

/usr/include/wchar.h:520: cannot convert `const wchar_t* __restrict' to `const

   __wcstoull_internal(const __gwchar_t*, __gwchar_t**, int, int)'
make[1]: *** [DS_AudioDec.o] Error 1

I wonder has anyone else had similar errors and how to fix it. Do I need
another package or something?
