I was using M$ win 98 up until sept 2003 and have only used it now to play some games. When I installed 9.1 I think I hosed the install 10+ times in the 1st 3 weeks and I almost gave up. Although I realized I wasn't prepared enough, so I googled for any how-to on bash, man pages, specific commands, and any linux how-to .. I lurk this list & cooker mostly, but someone here recommended 2 O'Reilly books, "Linux in a Nutshell" and "Running Linux". I received "Linux in a Nutshell" first, so I started there. It wasn't until I read "Running Linux" where I started hearing myself say, " aah..thats what they meant", this book sheds a lot of light on where it all started and how it works together. I still refer to these references all to often. Linux in a Nutshell has a ton of commands options and switches which has helped me. I highly recommend these. And rpm -rebuild has been separated into its own package: (unless I wrong, but I did a man rpm and didn't see the --rebuild option) rpm-build-4.2-22.1.92mdk I also updated to these, for security , IIRC and you will need the -devel to build from src rpm-4.2-22.1.92mdk rpm-devel-4.2-22.1.92mdk And you will need the kernel source as HarM said. http://rpms.mandrakeclub.com/rpms/mandrake/9.2/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/KByName.html here is also a beginning for rpm how-to http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/basics/brpm.html I too, am preparing to get nVidia drivers installed on 9.2, I failed once already, so Ive been googling for anything else I might encounter. Alt-F1 will get you into an X-less session, but that may not do the trick if you want to change things in X, since the X server is still running. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace will kill X (brutally). As I mentioned earlier (I can't remember whether it was in this thread or another) you need to get rid of the option to start X automatically (from the Mandrake Control Center go to XFdrake). You can switch it back on when everything is working to your satisfaction. I'm sorry you're frustrated..but if you want help you will have to ask for it. Up to now I couldn't find anything you've asked about your problems excepting something about a proprietary source RPM you were trying to build. So be more explicit about what you're trying to do and what's stopping you to do that. That way we can help. Feel free to go back to M$ if it bugs you that you have to learn to handle another OS because learning is what it's all about in the early stages. If you're not prepared to do that: Come back when you are. You yourself stated an nforce chip is fairly current and there must thousands of linux users with the same hardware with no trouble at all, so the probability that you yourself are the source of all the mishaps that are befalling you, is pretty high. Just ask. Re: [newbie] nForce and Mandrake 9.2 RPM error
Well, looks like I'm going to give up again.. I hate going back to microsoft, but I really hate that I have to troubleshoot this much to get my drivers working. I wanted to install linux so I could start learning it, not learn it so I could start using it. At this stage in the OS world, I don't see why it has to be so flip'n difficult. Are nforce based motherboards that new? No. Are they rare and mostly unused? No. So why in the world would an nforce based system not work from moment one of a major distribution install? I tried Mandrake 9.1 and 9.2 DE. I tried Fedora Core 1 after mandrake failed me repeatedly. I even tried Vector 4.0. None of these distributions worked for me. Fedora I didn't give an honest attempt I will admit, it just felt like it was too bloated and I really, REALLY was more comfortable with Mandrake 9.2 after playing with it for a bit. I realize that KDE is KDE, but for some reason, KDE in RH had been red hat- ized. Not the point... the point is, I couldn't get my freaking NIC working and I can't seem to find an answer for the problem. I don't know how to just shutdown the WM, so I did the ALT+F1 thing as recommended and it resulted in the same problem. I also tried the tar installation method. It too resulted in additional errors, perhaps because I didn't have certain dev packages installed that I may have needed (according to a post in another forum I tried to get help from). I'll stay on here for a couple of days in the event someone has another possible troubleshooting step or something that may help me. my last email showed up as being from [EMAIL PROTECTED], I hadn't properly configured my webmail client to show my name, so it defaulted to just my email address. Sorry for any confusion that caused. very frustrated at how long I've been at this with no results, sorry if this is all messed up or out of format. > > I'm getting the following error > > /usr/lib/rpm/rpmb: Permission denied > > > > when I try to run the following > > rpm --rebuild nforce NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.src.rpm > > > > I am running this as root. > > > > Does it matter where the rpm is located when I'm running the rebuild? > > > > Clean install of MandrakeLinux 9.2 Download Edition > > I installed with the onboard Auido and NIC disabled and have yet to enable them. [newbie] nForce and Mandrake 9.2 RPM error
I'm getting the following error /usr/lib/rpm/rpmb: Permission denied when I try to run the following rpm --rebuild nforce NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.src.rpm I am running this as root. Does it matter where the rpm is located when I'm running the rebuild? Clean install of MandrakeLinux 9.2 Download Edition I installed with the onboard Auido and NIC disabled and have yet to enable them. This is my second install of 9.2, the first time I had the Audio and NIC enabled. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The rpm is the source rpm downloaded from the nvidia web site.
