You might try adding something like, MS=V34B,33600 to your modem string, so
that your modem doesn't expect to be part of a faster connection. This is
mine (your's will be different because you likely have a different
manufacturer, but you can experiment):

ATW2&F+MS=V34B,1,0,33600

In the U.S. private companies aren't any better. I'm stuck with a 31.2k
maximum connection speed because of bad copper. And, the exchange I'm on is
an ancient analog, so DSL would require not only new lines but new
switchgear. The local privopoly telco is only required by the gov't to
furnish 14.4k (fax) capability. In rural areas like mine, there isn't any
profit incentive to force them to upgrade. GR

[newbie] pppd dies

2003-10-22 Thread Warren Post
Most, but not every, time that I try to connect to the net, pppd dies
within 5 seconds with an exit code #10. /var/log/daemons/errors says:

Oct 20 15:03:40 gerencia pppd[2104]: Could not determine local IP
address

What could cause pppd to be unable to determine a local IP address, and
what can I do to correct this?

Check out the instructions at tht following url, with their help I was able

PPPD connects about one out of three times for me. I am running 7.0
7.0 seems to be a more bug free distro than 7.2 thats for sure. I never could

If you run Lilo as boot manager, you can add
append="256M"
to /etc/lilo.conf, run lilo again and reboot. That should take care of

For grub, you can consult man grub how to do it, I don't recall off my

[newbie] pppd dies and not all ram found

2000-09-02 Thread Kyle Parfrey

Hi all.
I have installed mdk 7.1 and am very happy with it apart from two serious things:
1) I can't get ppp to work. Using kppp I input my dialup no , and after it connects I
get a message saying "pppd has died unexpectedly". I get the message as soon as I try
to connect with gnome ppp. I have not entered the ips of my ISP, I don't know them
and didn't need them with caldera. Would this have caused it, and if so can I put in
0.0.0.0 for both dns servers (this is what is in it for caldera and it works). I did a
whole fresh install and it still was happening.

2) Only 64mb of my 256mb of ram is recognised. In the installation in the field total
ram , (found 64mb) i put in 256. If I reinstall how can I get all my ram to work?

If these two probs can be fixed I would reinstall mandrake (for the 4th time...), I
liked it loads apart from them.
Thanks all,
Kyle

I have the same problem. I did the above, but it only lets me do it as
root. I was finally able to connect, but got nowhere - even though I
have set my ISPs DNS correctly, kppp seemed unable to resolve any domain

For fellow newbies:

A useful tip I found in a PPP "help" page. To view the debugging messages:

Edit /etc/syslog.conf. Change where it says:
*.info
to:
*.debug

(Don't forget to switch this back after you get your ppp connection
working!)

Then stop & restart the syslogd daemon.
killall -HUP syslogd
syslogd

Add the following line to /etc/ppp/options:
debug

While you are trying your ppp connection (I recommend trying to get it
working with kppp first), open another console window, then type:
tail -f /var/log/messages

Now leave that console window open. This is a cool feature. This console
window will now display all the debugging messages, as they occur.

When I am out of X Window, I like to be able to copy & paste info at the
shell prompt. For example listing a rpm file, then copying that file name
to the rpm command that I am making. Saves typing those long file names!
The middle mouse button is your friend.

I tried installing kpackage in Red Hat 6.0, from the KDE.org rpm file. It
doesn't work (doesn't display the installed packages).I would just wait
for kpackage to be fixed. In the meantime, GnoRPM is pretty good. And
it's a good chance to hone your command line skills with rpm!

I didn't start it myself. It was started automatically after installation. Of
course, I need the mouse.

I know the command line as much as someone who just came out of the DOS world.

If you don't need it, turn it off. Problem solved. And if there

I did that, too, but received no help. They told me to come to the newsgroups.

Nothing right now, unless Mandrake leaves every settings where Red Hat left.

 As for it missing

Kpackage worked fine for me, no problem. Glint was excellent in some ways.

No, the answer was posted to me: as root you have to set UID for /usr/bin/kppp.

I am the user. (And the root as well.)

The same problem happened to my friend.

Mine was also, except for troubles with dialling in, and with the shutdown.
These were not present in Mandrake 5.2. After replaceing Mandrake 5.3's
initscript with 5.2's one, everything works fine. --> Bug in the initscript in
5.3 (at least with some serial mice).

Turn on debugging and see if anything obvious pops up. Check your log
files and see if anything is listed there when the connection is
dropped.

Do you need gpm? It doesn't sound like you're very comfortable at the
command line, so I'm wondering if it's even necessary for you to run
it. If you don't need it, turn it off. Problem solved. And if there

And if you use the supported tools, it works just fine. Odd, that. Try

ppp0' and everything is fine. Be sure to check the box that says 'Allow

So check the permissions on the /var/lock directory to make sure your
user can write there.

This KPPP problem doesn't exist on my copy of Mandrake, and I haven't
seen any other postings about 'works as root, not as user' from anyone
else in the past 3 or 4 months that I've been using Mandrake.

As for the 'programming guru' comment, I'll be the first to admit that I
couldn't code my way out of a paper bag. My Mandrake installation and
subsequent use has been completely trouble-free and without any need to
program anything.

> I am very upset about their carelessness. Linux will not win the hearts of

I'm sick and tired of people posting to this mailing list who've seen a
mention of Linux somewhere, bought a distribution, installed it, and now
stare blankly at the monitor wondering what they hell they're supposed
to do. And when something doesn't work exactly the way they think it
should, they're completely baffled as to what to do! Linux provides you
with more debugging information that you could ever imagine -- if you
know where to look for it (hint, try /var/log)

Linux on your personal machine IS NOT and will NEVER be like running
Windows. Windows allows you to be an end-user. No sense in worrying
about where you files are stored or how to configure your POP client to
retrieve your mail -- Windows will take care of that for you. Linux
forces you to be an administrator. This is a powerful system that
allows you to undertake tasks in a variety of ways. It's up to YOU to
make something of it.

So quit stomping your feet and tossing a temper tantrum and ask for help
WITHOUT the "threats" to give up Linux. You'll get alot further.

Many many thanks. I will try.
And I hate Windows, but I have to do my work.
Any idea about the pppd unexpectedly dying in user?
It works fine in root.
