Re: [newbie] smp kernel
Wow. I'm running the SMP kernel on my 2.8GHz P4 laptop and it works great. I don't have much experience with it so far, but I haven't had a single problem with it. You should be able to install the single proc kernel even on a multi-threaded machine though. [newbie] smp
I am using MDK 7.2 on an Abit BP6 motherboard with dual Celeron. cat /proc/cpuinfo Lists both processors identically. Does this mean that SMP is enabled and working? If not, how do I verify smp? What does "1101 bogomips" mean. Thanks in advance! Lee
[newbie] SMP on IBM PC Server 330?
I have an IBM PC Server 330 with 2 Pentium Pro 200 processors. I installed Mandrake 7.2 on this machine initially, and showed two processors on bootup. I reinstalled to get raid1 working, and I must have done something different - I no longer see the two processors active. Is Mandrake supposed to autodetect the 2nd processor, or do I need to be installing a certain way? I didn't see any configuration details that mentioned SMP during the GUI install. Thank you. _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Yes, Mandrake 7.2 will install with SMP support when a clean install is done ... just did it today on the Epox dual board On Tue, 19 Dec 2000, you wrote: > > hello, > i'm new to linux, and about to build a dual cpu machine. Can mandrake 7.2 > currently see and use 2 processors by default?.I was very surprised when i > read that smp is not enabled in some distros (corel linux).I couldn't find > any info at Mandrake's site. [newbie] SMP support in 7.2 ?
hello, i'm new to linux, and about to build a dual cpu machine. Can mandrake 7.2 currently see and use 2 processors by default?.I was very surprised when i read that smp is not enabled in some distros (corel linux).I couldn't find any info at Mandrake's site. If not,is there an "easy" workaround? I don't think i can venture into recompiling the kernel at this point,so i'm looking for a distro that supports dual processors withoutmy intervention, thanks in advance, Cem
Re: [newbie] SMP
open /proc/cpuinfo, if you're running with 2 processors, it'll give specifications for cpu0 and cpu1. If you're NOT using both processors, and want to be. Use the mkbootdisk command to make a bookdisk of the SMP kernel located in /lib/modules. If you're running Mandrake 7.2, the command to make an SMP bootdisk is this: mkbootdisk --device /dev/fd0 2.2.17-21mdksmp Tyler On Sat, 4 Nov 2000, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Date: Sat, 4 Nov 2000 13:16:50 US/Pacific > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: [newbie] SMP > > How can I find out if I'm running SMP Kernal or not??? > >

Steve, I have just recently upgraded to a BP6 Motherboard and installed Mandrake 7.0, followed the instructions at this web site: http://netllama.ipfox.com/stepbystep.htm under the 'ULTRA66' section, installed without a hitch on a drive connected to the UDMA/66, no problem :) It did detect SMP and installed the proper kernel, detected my SoundBlaster Live! and USR External 56K modem also. Re: [newbie] SMP not detecting
If you installed over a previous installation format the whole shit, I had the same prob. And if ya turned on MPS 1.4 then change it to the default 1.1 in yer bios. By the linux rules regarding SMP, the CPU's are so cl, I have to change the Clock when I dual boot into windows, or the cpu's just get too warm, though I could use CPUidle, but :) Cya!
[newbie] SMP not detecting
I have Mandrake 7.0 and my friends computer (same as mine, dual 550/BP6) detects the 2 cpus just fine on install, but mine didn't. How can I go about making this work, and why didn't it detect it on install? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

does Mandrake7 automatically detect dual processors and install a smp kernal ?
[newbie] SMP Kernel
I'm running a dual pent 200 mmx on a Tyan mobo. NT doesn't like the mobo and win95/98 doesn't use multi-proc so this could be the first time since 1994 that the second processor will be used! BIOS recognizes the 2 processors during start-up. When I compile the kernel ("make config") I choose SMP=Y APM=N MTRR=Y. So far thoses are the only items I should key into. When I installed MDK6.5 I chose YES for installing SMP. If anyone has any other things to try let me know! Re: [newbie] smp kernel 2.2.13-7mdk and modules
Hi, Gary, Yes, I do have a dual Pentium II machine. smp was working fine when I was running mandrake 5.3 kernel 2.2.9. I think much of my difficulties here are due to my unfamiliarity with recompiling kernels from rpms. I had always compiled kernels from tar.gz. On the mandrake 6.1 installation cd, there are several kernel rpms, like kernel, kernel-source, kernel-headers, etc. Which of these packages are needed for compiling an smp kernel? From the mandrake web site documentation, it seems like kernel-source and kernel-headers are all that you need. But then what about kernel-smp and kernel-smp-fb? I tried recompiling an smp kernel with all of these packages installed, and still no success getting a bootable smp 2.2.13-7mdk kernel. For all of the people at mandrakesoft, is there a tar.gz of 2.2.13-7mdk? Right now, a tar.gz of the 2.2.13-7mdk kernel source is more to be desired than gold by me. Re: [newbie] smp kernel 2.2.13-7mdk and modules
Do you have a multi-processor motherboard? The smp kernel is for mult-processor systems. "Thanks M Thompson at Hot Mail" I had a problem with installing a driver for my sound card, I know this is completely different to your problem, because my linux box was using the smp kernel. After I did away with that and used the 2.2.13-7mdk kernel I did not have a problem. Later, Gary Warren Doney wrote: > Hidong Kim wrote: > > > > Hi, Axalon, > > > > I tried the 'depmod -a', but the 2.2.13-7mdk smp kernel is still hanging > > during boot at "Finding module dependencies". Re: [newbie] smp kernel 2.2.13-7mdk and modules
Hi, Axalon, I tried the 'depmod -a', but the 2.2.13-7mdk smp kernel is still hanging during boot at "Finding module dependencies". Should it be 'depmod -a 2.2.13-7mdk' or 'depmod -a 2.2.13'? [newbie] smp kernel 2.2.13-7mdk and modules
Hi, Are there any known problems with kernel 2.2.13-7mdk and smp? I recompiled the smp kernel using the kernel-source and kernel-headers RPMs from the Mandrake 6.1 installation CD, and now the machine won't boot. It hangs at "Finding module dependencies". A up 2.2.13-7mdk kernel boots fine. Thanks, Hidong

Try installing the kernel headers and source RPM that come with the Mandrake 6.1 distribution. From your command line: cd /usr/src/linux make xconfig >From here you should be able to choose the options you want in your kernel. I believe you will find an SMP option. Re: [newbie] smp questions
I would also add to the other coments here that cheap is not good. I have a friend here who swears by the prices of PCChips boards, and then swears at them when he comes to set them up!!! My personal recommendation is ABIT, they work very well, and don't use jumpers. The setup is virtually automatic, so is very easy. And they usually support AGP, PCI, and ISA, although newer boards have less ISA slots than most people would like. Oh, and they are an overclockers dream, as you can tweak speeds and voltage settings through the GUI. It only takes a quick reset on the motherboard if you totally screw things up. And they are only usually 10-20 pounds dearer than the cheaper ones. I believe the processors can be different speeds, but the faster one will be brought down to the speed of the slower one, so it's a bit pointless. I can't recommend any prices matching places, as I've always found something that is apparently cheap, gone to one of the supposedly more expensive websites, and found they've matched the price with free delivery! There's no better way than actually doing the legwork and checking out what they have directly. - Original Message - From: pete moss <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, November 17, 1999 4:07 AM Subject: [newbie] smp questions i have in mind doing some system hardware upgrades, one of the things that i am thinking about upgrading is my processor. i currently have a PII 350. my motherboard can support up to a 450. i am also considering getting a smp motherboard and a second chip. is there a good cheap motherboard that supports this, as well as agp, isa, and pci? do the two processors need to be the same speed? also, is there a better place to compare prices than cnet.com? tia :P
Re: [newbie] smp questions
without a more info about your setup it is hard to say a whole lot. Do some research on the motherboard you own, check out the manufacturer's specs and see what processors they say they support (types and speeds). If you want to do SMP buying a "cheap" motherboard is probably not a smart idea. Again, do some research and find a board that others are reporting success with. Yes, you want to have the same processors on the board (some even say that getting processors from the same production batch give you better performance). Why do i get an error message everytime I try to recompile some program that uses SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processing)? For example, I am trying to install VMware's Emulator on my Linux Machine (Mandrake 6.1, kernel version 2.2.13-7mdk) and when I invoke their install script, it gives me the following error message... - Begin Error - What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]? <--- I accept the default and it shoudl be correct... The directory of kernel headers (version 2.2.13-7mdk) does not match your running kernel (version 2.2.13-7mdksmp). Consequently, even if the compilation of the module was successful, the module would not load into the running kernel. - End Eror - Did Mandrake drop the ball on this, or is there something I am missing. I have all the kernel source installed and it is in /usr/src/linux/include. Anybody else run into problems on an SMP machine? Help please. I would have posted this to VMware, but i have noticed the same problem with several packages while trying to build and SMP version. I ran into a similar problem while just trying to recompile a new kernel.. -- John

[newbie] SMP kernel problems on PPro
My tech helped me fix one problem (booting from the IDE vs SCSI -- turns out there was an option in BIOS I hadn't seen to tell the BIOS which device to boot from.) However, there's a more troubling and less easily fixed (afaik) problem with the kernel: If I try to boot from the SMP kernel so I can actually USE the second processor, it locks up trying to scan the IDE bus. However, if I boot "linux-up" at the LILO prompt, it boots just fine. Does anyone know if the newer kernel solves this problem? Thanks... John
