[newbie] sound help

2001-03-10 Thread KompuKit

Below, is a partial listing within webmin...of my /var/log/messages
for todays boot.
Sound works ok, IF I click on a wav, or mp3 etc...to hear it.
but, as for system sounds inside control center...I can't hear them
either on startup...or shutdown...or if just testing them, with its test
button.

How do I fix this...anyone know?

I had the same sound card problem. I got the warning about not running it in a term
windows. I did it anyway. It work just fine. I had sound running in less than a
minute.

as root, enter the command init 3.

You will need the init command a lot, so I will explain its use:

the init command switched the systems runlevel. The high the runlevel
the more is loaded. level 0 is off, level 1 is single user, level 3 is
text mode, I think level 5 is xwindows.

Suspends your X session and puts you at the prompt so you
can run Xconfigurator - amongst other command line utils.

When you're done w/ thatwill fire your X session back up
for you.

It worked fine under Mandrake 6.1. Does anyone have any idea? Any help would

Press ctl=alt-f2 (or f3, f4, f5, or f6) login as root, do
your thing and then logout. When you're logged out then
press alt-f7 to get back to your x-session, it won't even
know that you've been gone. :-)

I installed the store version (MacMillian's 7.2 Mandrake)
Howeverit said that it located and installed my
soundcard
but for some reason...I can't play wavs...or hear system
default
startup wav...at all. I tried to setup using SNDCONFIG in a
terminal...but it says I shouldn't configure under xwindow
envirorment. How can I restart to a prompt...but still be
able to
auto re-start later back to X.

do you configure sound in mandrake 7.0-2

Curtis;
From a terminal session (CTRL-ALT-F1) (CTRL-ALT-F7 to get back to xwindows)
and login as "root"; then type
sndconfig (this is automatic; if that doesn't work; try)
sndconfig --noprobe (this is manual, and you'll have to have info on
your card I/O, IRQ, & DMA; if that doesn't work) go to
http://www.4front-tech.com they have all sort of sound drivers for linux.
You can download a free trial to see if it works; if it does, you'll have
to pay.
Hope it helps.

'sndconfig' should work, although it should have been detected when you
did the installation.
