I have an nForce2 board as well. To get things working nicely
(including on-board sound and ethernet in my case) it requires drivers
from nVidia.
Be careful not to confuse the board drivers with the video drivers
or things could get confusing :-)

I believe there are older Mandrake rpms but don't be afraid to

DUDE, so so so sorry to hear that.

I've set up a fund here in Australia for Americans that are trying to
escape the ravages and horrors of living in the US; I reckon I've got
about $10 USD so far - I've been trying to solicit donations from my
neighbours and others, but they're not too keen on the whole thing,
having an American already in the neighbourhood, and I have this
distinct feeling they're trying to find a way to move me out.

Try www.cheapbytes.com. They _may_ have the 8.2 download CD's; if they do,
the
price is probably less than $10. Disclaimer: I've never dealt with them.

Personally, I think 8.1 is the explanation. I had much the same
problems for the short time I used it. 8.1 was troublesome for a lot
of people. I think 8.2 is still about on the mirrors, if you have
reason not to use 9.0 or 9.1. I would recommend leaving 8.1 if you
can.

So does anyone have an explanation for this? The hardware I'm running is a little old
but I don't think its that old. I'm a little concerned because I keep having varying
problems with my system. For instance I'm running KDE and I use xmms. Every now and
then xmms will decide that it can't play because it can't get a hold of the output
plugin or something, (I haven't seen it for a short while and I forget what exactly it
said) and I can't get it to start playing until I change the sound server setting in
the control center. Generally ALSA works but when I do that I lose all of my desktop
sounds. I doubt that this is directly connected to the bridge resource problem but I
suspect that there is a correlation somewhere. It seems like every time I reinstall
(which I've had to do several times unfortunately) there is a different and
unexplanable problem. Being a programmer I'm not one to just let problems be, I must
track it down and fix it!

Any help greatly appreciated.

Your problem isn't that it's saying it but why is it repeating itself.

What processor do you have, and maybe the mobo ?
