The correct procedure is definitely to install windows first (I can't believe
I actually said that!!) I have WIN98SE for compatibility purposes which I use
about 5 per cent of the time and ML8.2 which I use for the rest of my needs.
I have had various flavours of windows running along with linux and I put lilo
in my /boot partition and use XOSL (a nifty free graphical bootloader)
available from www.xosl.org - This allows me to change settings or upgrade at
any time and XOSL will immediately recognise the new OS without any real
dramas.

Linux is by far a better OS and I'm slowly weaning myself off my Microsoft
dependency problems

Another damn good reason for installing windows first.

But surely the alternative to this palaver would be to boot the Windows
restore floppy. Type "fdisk /MBR", then do your windows install... thus
allowing the reboot into windows during its install.

Winblows is a MBR hog.. it's gotta have those first (what is it.. 80
clusters? been too long since i've tried dual boot on one drive.)
so ya have to fake it out and put winblows on first. (what's on second,
i don't know's on third :-P)

Will it? Wouldn't you have to put an entry for windows in
/etc/lilo.conf? Or does Mandrake simply recognize that there's a fat32
partition. I'm just curious how that would work with no working windoze
installation yet.

You are correct. Win**t does need to reboot before installation will continue. But,
I have developed a rather-simple workaround. Please, read my previous posts on his

Yes, this is an easier way. But note, this will not append the windoze info. That

Not to be argumentative, but I have just (within the last two days), done just that.

I had Mandrake 8.2 on a machine, and then installed Win2K Server (for training
purposes only, I assure you). But here's the hitch...*some* versions of windoze
require a reboot before the install in complete. And this reboot is *before* the
installer writes the MBR. (Read: install could not complete since the MBR was still
intact and pointed to Linux)

So, what I had to do was (this was mid-install of win):
boot into Linux,
backup lilo.conf,
create a blank file named lilo.conf,
run lilo,
and reboot. This booted into and completed the win install.

Then:
boot from MDK CD1,
F1 for more options,
repair boot loader,
reboot into Linux,
append the windoze info to lilo.conf,
and run lilo again.

Done. Now, wasn't that simple? ;)

hm.. to tell you the truth, you should have intalled windoze first.
when you install windows now, it will overwrite the LILO entry in your MBR,
so your computer will boot straight into windows, no questions asked.

so, make a linux bootdisk now. install windoze, and then, to get back
into linux, you will have to use the bootdisk and restore lilo by
logging in as root and executing /sbin/lilo at a command-line terminal.

don't worry, windows will be recognized OK.
