How fast of a machine does one need to run
vmware so it does not slow down too terribly?

I don't believe the speed of the processor (within reason..., I wouldn't use a
486 ;o)) is as important as the amount of RAM.  I think 128M would be the
minimum to prevent noticeable slow down.  256M would obviously be MUCH
better.

the other way around... What VMWare does is to boot a "virtual machine" that
runs whatever OS you load in it - it will switch between a windowed or
full-screen session, and though it's a little slow, Linux seems to work quite
well this way - I'm planning in the near future to load VMWare on a Linux system
and try running NT or 95 in it - I'll post the results when I get a chance...

between the two.

WINE. Is VMware any better at running modern 32-bit Windows programs? I have
two in mind: Corel Ventura for work and Kyodai for play.
